In our school SMPN 11 Bandung, most of the students are aware of social problems in their surroundings. However, they still need to develop empathy, so that they can give appropriate concrete solution to the problem.
Developing empathy can be started from students’ role as volunteer. Volunteering can be conducted among peers in school or in other school, or in lower classes, or in the society. It will help students in sharpening the social initiatives they developing.
Curriculum of formal education in Indonesia requires the teacher to make learning as a process, but at the end, only the result is assessed. Thus came the idea to do the youth volunteering in formal schools, in the hope that students can play an active role as agents of change in addressing social issues

Through thematic learning in Integrated Science , students learn to develop empathy as they work in group, discussing social issue of their preference, and formulating a solution idea. The implementation of the project is conducted in extracurricular activity, through Youth Science Group.

An interesting example is the Honesty Toilet project, initiated by Ria Putri Primadanty (7th grade) with her team of 5. They were interested in girl reproductive health issue, specifically toilet hygiene in relation to menstrual period. They create the initiative “Clean and Healthy Honesty Toilet.” They get involved in maintaining toilet cleanliness, and inserted also anti-corruption value. They provide sanitary napkins that girl students can buy by placing some amount of money to an unsupervised coin box. This initiative has been socialized to be adopted as one of the criteria for “healthy school” standard. Ria and team was elected as Young Changemakers (Ashoka Youth Venture) in 2011.

I am currently teaching Integrated Science class VII. I tried to incorporate social issues in the learning process in science class. First, we create a holistic thematic learning centralized on "Young Researchers." Then the students create a project, a group assignment. In gathering the knowledge and understanding of social issues, students create a vision board containing their expectation for a better condition and what to do as a young researcher.
The next stage, we screened motivational films about inspiring youth, then conduct discussion to discover the strength and advantages of each, and how it can contribute to solving social problem. This stage is called "book of me."
After the project is completed, the next step, students are given the opportunity to develop social ideas in extracurricular activities that can be done outside of school hours. Students will undergo a fascinating learning experience, they can choose to do advocacy or volunteering.
Finally, a social initiative was born, e.g. Some made a very interesting campaign, namely "Cardboard Puppet,” telling the story of how social issues can be addressed. Some create scientific presentation in form of "vision board"

The birth of young changemakers (3 young changemakers were acknowledged by Ashoka YV), inspiring hundreds of students to create change.
Our school and 10 other junior high, 2 senior high, and 2 groups of university student were inspired to volunteer in various places: elementary schools, drop out youth, and a community waste management group of 65 households.

The project began in 2008, when Amilia Agustin, one of our students become Ashoka Young Changemakers in 2009. Her project was Go To Zero Waste School. They solve the problem of waste in our school by offering simple solutions. They were also awarded SATU INDONESIA AWARD 2010 (Astra & Tempo group). In 2011 she also encouraged her peers to join YCM 2011 in project Eternity, creative education through music and theatre in orphanage. In year 2012 they encouraged other youth to share through story telling in 12 elementary schools in Bandung Bercerita program.
