LOVE BC's Violence Prevention Committees (VPCs)
Emplacement
VPCs are communities of multi-barriered youth ages 13-19, who work together to build skills and create media tools for reducing violence in their lives and schools. For six weeks, participants develop language to discuss violence; explore the larger social justice factors that contribute to violence; strategize solutions to deal with violence in participants’ own lives and communities; and discover safer ways to confront experiences of violence. Participants also collectively build a media project that they can then use to educate others.
Reason:
I am nominating LOVE BC's Violence Prevention Committees because they are innovative and because they are positively changing our communities. As one LOVE participant put it: "Without LOVE I would be in one of three places right now: dead, in jail, or on a highway to one of those two. LOVE is the reason I can look in the mirror and smile at the person I see. It has given me the tools necessary to manage my emotions, network, find self-worth, get a job, express myself creatively, ask for help, give back to my community and beyond, be a huge help for other youth in need, plan my future, find stability and confidence, be able to vocally express my opinions properly, public speak, and most importantly, love myself."
