A low cost community grocery store serving Smithers and area to persons and families with low annual incomes. They provide a great selection of nutritious yet affordable foods to those who need it most. I-Foods operates by partnering with local businesses and agencies to "rescue food" which is in surplus, damaged, or nearing expiration that would otherwise be bound for the landfill. This allows I-Foods to deliver low prices to their members. I-Foods currently has 775 card members which helps approximately 2500 individuals, including children and Seniors. Major local food outlets have partnered to supply food products as well as make job opportunities to the individuals they serve
Reason:
I am nominating I-foods because their mission statement is to serve the local community through providing vocational training and employment for disabled individuals; reducing the socio-economic pressures that face low-income persons and families; while at the same time supporting local businesses and minimizing the environmental impact of food waste and its subsequent carbon footprint in the local area.
