Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
1 in 6 Americans live on incomes that put them at risk of hunger. 17 million children go to bed hungry each night. In a country that prides itself on being the world’s greatest superpower, this high number of food insecure people is simply unacceptable. While the national statistic is upsetting, the portrait of hunger at the local level is even more disturbing. In Washington D.C., our nation’s capital, 1 in 2 children do not have enough to eat. 1 in 4 people in the state of Delaware rely on the food bank for assistance. Over 1.6 million people in Los Angeles are at risk for hunger. Over 48 million Americans nationwide struggle to find their next meal. Communities of all shapes, sizes and demographics are affected by hunger. It is a year-round issue that requires year-round solutions.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Move For Hunger partners with relocation companies to provide direct support for our nations food banks. When people relocate they often take the time to get rid of a ton of “stuff.” Unfortunately, this “stuff” is often perfectly good food that could go to a family in need rather than discarded. That's where we come in-our movers offer to pickup any unwanted food items from their customers and deliver it directly to their local food bank.
While 1 in 6 Americans rely on food banks, 1 in 7 Americans relocate every year. This correlation provides relocation companies with a unique opportunity to provide relief to the millions of Americans that are food insecure. By making "giving back" part of the moving process, we have found a simple, scalable way to fight hunger all across the nation. Relocation companies in the Move For Hunger network now turn every move into an opportunity to make a difference for someone in need.

Each time our movers go out on an estimate, they provide their customers with a letter describing the need facing their community as well as a box. These aren't people who signed up for the food bank's mailing list to learn about hunger, but rather everyday Americans who probably didn't know hunger was such a problem in their community. People are urged to donate their unopened, non-perishable food items during the move, and the moving company offers to pick it up and deliver it to the local food bank.
Most people want to help their communities, but often just don't know where or how. Move For Hunger is LITERALLY bringing the food drive into the homes of thousands of Americans every day and making the act of donating easy.
A recent example of our impact came from one of our movers in NJ. The moving company had a very successful month, collecting well over 800 lbs. from their customers. Upon making the delivery to the local food pantry, they were greeted by the food pantry's director who informed them that the pantry was entirely out of food. Without the donation from the moving company, the food pantry would have closed its doors. But thanks to the effort from the moving company, the pantry was able to stay open and provide 653 meals from the mover's food donation.
Move For Hunger also organizes a multitude of food drives and awareness events across the nation, engaging even more people to get involved in fighting hunger in their community. We are able to provide the tools to make food drives a success, while our movers offer to do all the heavy lifting.

While there are numerous food pantries and food banks throughout the country, we look at them as our partners in the fight against hunger rather than competitors. Food banks and pantries directly serve meals to the public, while Move For Hunger actively engages members of the relocation industry and individuals to support their local hunger relief organizations.
Move For Hunger is the first and only organization working to mobilize an entire industry for change. There are numerous hunger relief organizations in the US, such as Why Hunger, Feeding America, and Share Our Strength. We differ in that we provide a unique solution to the problem by bringing together the resources of the the relocation industry with food banks to create a greater social impact.

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
In three years, Move For Hunger has grown to work with over 350 moving companies and 180 real estate professionals in 44 states across the nation. Each company provides hunger awareness materials to approximately 5 clients each day. This means that each day roughly 2,500 unique individuals are educated about hunger in their communities.
Move For Hunger has brought together many of the leaders of the relocation industry, and to date our network has delivered over 700,000 lbs. of food to food banks all over the country. This is enough to provide at more than 530,000 lifesaving meals to those less fortunate.
In addition, Move For Hunger's programs and events have helped many food banks reduce transportation costs associated with food donation pick ups. Our movers offer their time and trucks free of charge to move food donations to where they need to be. For every dollar saved, a food bank can provide about 3 meals to a person in need.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
We strive to make Move For Hunger a household name, and hope that individuals will be more motivated to hire companies working to give back to their communities. In the next 2 years, we plan to triple our moving network to increase education to 7,500 individuals daily. With thousands of moving companies that have not joined our cause, our impact has yet to reach its full potential. By next year, we plan to have a network in place capable of delivering at least 1 million lbs. per year to food banks all over the country, that is enough to provide over 760,000 lifesaving meals. Thanks to the support of the relocation industry, the Move For Hunger network has the potential to provide over 1.5 million meals per year within the next 3 years.

Adam Lowy's family has owned a moving company in NJ for nearly 90 years. In that time they witnessed an incredible amount of waste involved when people moved. After looking more closely, they discovered that a lot of this waste was perfectly good food just being left behind. Fed up, they decided to ask their customers to donate any food they weren't bringing with them and they would deliver it directly to the food bank. In one month, they collected over 300 lbs. of food. This is food that would have ended up in a trashcan!
Proud of his collection, Adam took the food to his local food bank (where he hadn't been since a 5th grade class trip). He was shocked to learn that 100,000 people in his community relied on the food bank each year. Adam quit his job, and Move For Hunger was born. If one little moving company could collect so much by doing so little, what could the thousands of moving companies across the country achieve if they worked together.
