Visiting the landfill, you will get stunned by age groups and women scavenging through fatally stinking wastes full of oozing foul liquid mixed with fresh clinical blood which garbage trucks empty at landfill. Sadly, plastic wastes are sold off at exploitative prices to middlemen with scales already tampered with. Waste collectors immune systems are heavily demanding because of fatally polluted atmospheres, they require maintained health support to cope up with the body’s demanding aspect to resist foreign intrusion. Medical expenses rise due to frequent infections, savings if any will go down, victims miss work; money and time gets diverted from business towards sickness, thus the small money earned is always diverted to healing contracted diseases, sinking them further into poverty.

As they get extremely low income, which they cannot even save for relatively decent housing and other social expenses, waste pickers take on picking and eating discarded inedible stuff. we aim to initiate a Green Bank where they will be able to bank waste plastics and metal and in turn get money at networking Banks. Our Green Bank would actually be embedded within other well established commercial banks, where we would hold accounts for our clients. This will motivate savings as well as guarantee account opening at well established banks for homeless people who do not posses addresses and other credentials. However, they will be able to save recyclable wastes on their bank accounts at our collection centre (which has already kicked off with seed funding from Hilden Charitable Fund UK) and could receive housing mortgages of which in return they pay by banking trash.

The programme will enable poor people living off trash to afford daily meals and modest housing by enacting a Trash Bank where they will bank plastic wastes. Wastes are available everywhere, however the people who pick recyclable wastes earn extremly low income. The solution aims to bypass middlemen, dismantle the monopolistic markets, link poorest populations with fair sales and thus increase poor people’s earnings for decent livelihoods. With this different approach, the Green Bank; Wastes can provide huge resources for the poor. This flexible approach will increase picking of wastes which will as well ease Uganda’s previously fertile loam soil of plastic and metal toxics. As the initiative grows, it would provide for a housing mortgage facility for the poorest populations and would enact a very small membership fee paid in form of trash. we aim to give power to this economic opportunity to provide a housing programme whereby the Green Bank purchases huge areas of land, partitions them, build simple 2 roomed houses which would be mortgaged out to people proved to be poor, homeless, under-resourced and living near the landfill. This would evacuate them from being near the landfill which has caused lead accumulation in their children’s blood which causes mental retardation.They would then pay by banking trash within an agreed period. The Green Bank aims to break the exploitative sales of wastes to middlemen who sell to bigger companies. The Bank would lobby for socially minded companies abroad to purchase its plastic.

our peers in this case would have been the business dealers who buy plastics from waste pickers, but as they exploit waste pickers, we have no relationship with these. generally we have no competitors regarding the project, as long as it facilitates waste pickers standards of living with enjoyable health and enough income. we would engage the entire market locally

a pilot project titled “ Fair trade and safe workplace for Waste Pickers sustainable livelihoods” has already kicked off with a small seed fund from Hilden Charitable Fund UK) The pilot project provides for a collection place where scavengers can weigh their merchandise, clean the plastic wastes for higher payments and building their capacity to minimise waste associated health risks through provision of uncontaminated drinking water, a bath place, a rest area to contain health hazards by washing hands and bathing with antiseptics. 39 waste pickers now receive realistic payments for their clean plastic wastes, are able to meet rent costs and demonstrate a healthy living.

we aim to raise the income of over 1500 people, to be able to rent houses, send their children to school and meet costs of managing their health.

social economic conditions prevalent in third World cities differ from those in industrialized countries. Majority of third World cities are experiencing rapid urbanization brought about by fast population growth, as well as high immigration rates. Urbanization often takes place as the expansion or creation of new slum areas and squatter settlements. Typically, these settlements grow organically and lack any planning, resulting in twisting and narrow streets, as well as in the occupation of environmentally sensitive and disaster-prone areas. the poorest populations constitute the areas where municipal collection of wastes often does not exist. with the continued growing slum areas, we cited the opportunity to turn waste into a sustaining driving force that would upgrade the living starndards of these poor populations dwelling in the growing slum areas
