Harambee Aquaponics Project

Harambee Youth Kenya is a community-based organization tackling the social issue of children living on the street due to families' inaccessibility to nutrition, economic empowerment, and community support. The Harambee Aquaponics Project aims to combat that through using technology in sustainable agriculture coupled with a community-based business model.

Two separate, yet connected needs: The inaccessibility to healthy, affordable food in low-income areas of Nairobi, Kenya. And within Nairobi's agriculture sector, a lack of education in sustainable means of farming, leading to a mismanagement of resources.

La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !

Use technology and education in sustainable agriculture—Aquaponics (AP) systems and composting—coupled with a community-based business model to provide low-income families access to fresh produce and protein through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. AP system enables people to use their resources in an efficient and cost-effective manner, which in turn allows them to give back to the community. Clients, such as hotels, restaurants, and schools, that install an AP system will engage in a Social Responsibility Commitment, in which a percentage of their fish and vegetable yields will go towards a CSA program. The CSA is a program in which members agree in advance to purchase a minimum amount of produce and protein at a fixed price every yield. The program provides consumers with fresh food at a below-market price for nutritional needs or to use in a small business. Simultaneously, at HYK and the worksites we'll hold low-cost educational workshops for the community.

A business hotel outside of Nairobi installs a 5,000L Aquaponics system and a three-bin composting site that yields approximately 1,000 fish and 2,500lb of vegetables annually. The hotel uses one-third of the fish and vegetables for their hotel's restaurant and one-third of the fish and vegetables to sell at market. Because the hotel is saving money on food costs and is generating income at market, they are able to give one-third of the yield to the CSA program. The CSA program at Harambee Youth Kenya (HYK) is held in Dagoretti, a low-income area on the outskirts of Nairobi, and the program is geared towards single mothers, elderly individuals, and other disadvantaged groups. Members receive a set amount of food every yield for their family's consumption or for business purposes. Simultaneously partnerships are established with CSA members that aid in the hotel's AP system and composting site. For instance, a vegetable shop owner's excess food scraps are collected to be used in the composting site. Money raised through the CSA is invested in strengthening the CSA program and holding educational workshops at HYK. Along with this, the hotel is using the AP system to hold low-cost, fee-based educational workshops and tours for Universities, agriculturalists, and community members, thus spreading knowledge about sustainable agriculture. All throughout this the youth at HYK are participating in running workshops and managing the CSA program.

Food-based Humanitarian Aid
Most programs directly give food to individuals, which creates dependency and diminishes internal resourcefulness. Our program believes that every individual in a community has something to offer and a provides an egalitarian system that pools these skills for community development and individual empowerment. Our aim is to work with similar food-based, humanitarian aid organizations by providing them opportunities to be part of our CSA program.
Traditional farming
Aquaponics systems act as a solution to many urban communities because it uses low-resource input to produce a high-level of nutritional food, which ultimately lowers the cost of food. They can be installed on small plots of land, use local resources, and use less water and energy.

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?

We have been working with three different clients in regards to sustainable agriculture. The Tumaini Children's Home has hired us to consult them on their pre-existing fish farm. We are looking to turn the pond into a rice field that is connected to two large fish tanks and runs as an aquaponics system. The second client is the Program Director for the Corporate Responsibility Sector of a Nairobi-based IT company. We have been consulting him on the aquaponics system they installed for St. Michael's Academy in the slums of Kibera. Our third client works in the food security program of the FAHAMU Fellowship and is interested in owning his own system.

We aim to increase the number of people who are receiving nutritional food through the CSA, expand the way the Nairobi community thinks about farming through educational workshops, and strengthen the network of businesses, organizations, and community members through partnersheips within the CSA.
Client's installed aquaponics system and composting site will serve as a resource center for sustainable agricultural education, partnerships, and initiatives, which will broaden the scope of the community's agricultural perspective and opportunities.
The CSA will impact the availability of fresh, low-priced food to businesses—such as restaurants; organizations—such as children's homes, elderly-care facilities and schools; and individual community members through the CSA program.

AP System: skepticism towards a new form of farming. The community may take time to accept this alternative, which involves adopting a new perspective on growing food. We will counter this with community outreach approaches, such as free introductory workshops, informational flyers, and directly speaking to institutions and organizations. We will gain individuals' confidence by offering them a high level of research, development, and knowledge about AP.
CSA: in establishing contractural agreements with people and ensuring continued consumer participation. Because many lower-income individuals and nonprofits don't have a stready flow income, we will offer different levels of membership so the participant can choose what they are able to commit themselves to.

I met the HYK community in August 2011. After hearing each boys unique story about how he came to live on the street, I began to see an interconnecting theme in each ones experience. The majority of the families that the boys came from suffered from lack of food security, job placement, and general community support. That is when I set out in search of multidimensional ideas that target this elevated degree of poverty. The technology of aquaponics systems answered many of my concerns about the sustainability of our current global food production system and excessive use of energy and water. Once I immersed myself in the world of alternative livelihoods I was introduced to CSA program, which was equally inspiring. I feel that we live in an interesting and important time, in which our society’s scientific advancements are converging with humanity’s ever-increasing collective compassion, and it is leading to innovations geared towards genuine social change.

Quels sont vos différents partenariats ?

Over the years we've been fortunate to be partnered with Africa Medical Research Foundation—Dagoretti Children in Need Project (AMREF-DCIP), who we worked in conjunction with to provide housing to street boys and AMREF-DCIP provided school uniforms and food to the center. The Soccer Queens, an all-girls soccer team that equips girls from disadvantaged backgrounds with educational opportunities, self-esteem, and goals. And Harambee USA, Inc., a state-based nonprofit organization that serves as an umbrella organization to Harambee Youth Kenya and the Soccer Queens.

With a large number of the youth at HYK graduating from school within the next 3 years, we aim to expand the program to meet the greater needs of the community and to combat the social issue of street children closer to the source. We will transition the house where the HYK youth have lived into a multi-purpose resource center where community organizations can come to meet, share ideas and grow.
