Young women are one of the most powerful, untapped sources of innovative entrepreneurial ideas. Yet from VC firms to social incubators, their voices are often unheard and their ideas unfunded. Those who are able to launch microbusinesses often prove unable to scale-- barred from tapping the funding and the mentorship they need to grow impactful ventures, no matter the industry. We have talked to dozens of these young women, traveling around the world to 15 countries and conducting Skype interviews to hear their stories; and the formidable challenge common to them all is access to a support network: peers, mentors, educational resources they need to make their voices heard and learn how to thrive. We aim to create for them this network.

girltank creates a virtual tank for young women interested in social entrepreneurship to utilize the collective genius of the group to brainstorm ideas and solutions, crowdsource funding for their ventures, and receive peer-to-peer mentoring. Our company revolves around the vital need to support young women in becoming high-impact social entrepreneurs, and every service that we provide through our online tank and offline hubs normalizes perceptions of young women as innovators solving social problems.

Celeste North is the founder of NuFlick, a distribution network for independent films in Mexico. She is currently operating a beta product that distributes 20 movies to about 2,000 customers; however, she is struggling to move beyond this initial stage. Celeste lacks start-up experience, is still trying to understand the industry and the market, and is searching intently for funding to hire staff and refine her product. She approaches girltank because she wants to be able to share her story and exchange her experiences with other young women entrepreneurs, and to gain access to a common platform for identifying, curating, and creating relevant resources. girltank connects her to this community, of peers and mentors, and helps her craft her applications for various start-up grants. Additionally, girltank registers her as one of the twenty entrepreneurs to be highlighted and supported at the launch of its crowdfunding platform in November.

Our most direct crowdfunding competitors are Start Some Good, Buzzbnk and Indiegogo. Our most direct female empowerment competitors include Women 2.0, Girls for a Change and Girl Up. And the worldwide attention to gender inequality grows stronger each year with more organizations, companies, incubators and accelerators entering the conversation to try and address the problem. girltank is different because we offer both a crowdfunding platform enabling young women entrepreneurs to raise awareness and funds, and an online community to foster conversation and peer-to-peer support among our users.

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?

In just over a year of developing our idea and building a prototype, we have built a community of 1,500 members from 104 countries who are beginning to trust each other and develop collaborative solutions together. We initiated a partnership with Spelman University to deliver a series of workshops on social change and venture creation. And we led a ‘10,000 Names in 100 Days campaign’ from February to May 2012 that spurred dialogue about and shared the stories of young women changemakers doing powerful work in local communities.

In the next year and a half, we hope to have helped approximately 1,200 female social entrepreneurs successfully raise funds for their social ventures. Within three years, we will consider ourselves successful if our work culminates in these results:
1) 10K young women aged 14–29 with the positive role models, education, podium global network to adopt entrepreneurship as a tool to address social problems and accelerate their growth;
2) 20% increase in the number of YSEs being accepted to accelerators, fellowship and incubation programs worldwide;
3) 20% increase in the number of philanthropists and investors who deliver mentorship and funding specifically to YSEs
4) 10 girltank members who scale their social enterprises to directly impact over 1 million people.

1: Were reaching out to diverse young women and building a space that is intimate, trustworthy and collaborative. We plan to hire a diverse staff and institute a regional volunteer translation/exchange program that encourages cross-cultural connections
2: We dont have strong tech backgrounds but our product and position in the marketplace are based on tech innovation. We won a grant from Free Range Studios to build our website, and we plan to bring on board a technical co-founder along with at least one tech board member
3. Many projects are aimed at helping girls. We have to work to distinguish ourselves in what is becoming a crowded market by positioning ourselves as an overarching platform/portal to encourage smaller/niche organizations to partner with us to reach their target audienc

In 2009, journalist Tara Roberts embarked upon a solo, self-funded, 10- month, round-the-world adventure to interview young women social-change activists under the age of 30 for a book. Tara interviewed 51 amazing young women traveling to 15 countries. When she returned from the journey in 2010, she wondered what would happen if these extraordinary young women could pool their resources together. She felt the need for a vibrant virtual hub for these girls to grow their impact. At the same time, Sejal Hathi, who founded Girls Helping Girls when she was 15 years old, had recently launched a program called the Sisters 4 Peace Network to create a global community for uniting, mobilizing, and advancing young women changemakers. She, too, was wrestling with this idea of how to form a successful single space that could serve as the hub and resource center for these young women to create global projects for social change and to achieve their full potential. So they decided to band together.

Quels sont vos différents partenariats ?

We are partners with Start-Up Chile and the Founder Institute, two global start-up incubation programs. We have partnered with Spelman College to deliver e-workshops on social venture creation. And we established pipeline partnerships with the Unreasonable Institute and Echoing Green to increase the number of females applying to and being chosen for these programs. Finally, we have fostered media partnerships with MTV Voices and 10x10 to source, highlight, disseminate the stories of female changemakers globally.
