Some of the Romanian students (doing their undergraduate studies) lack financial resources. They do have skills and knowledge and the majority have very strong computer skills. On the other hand, we have a lot of pupils that need tutoring to pass important exams (like the Baccalaureate). The results of the past exams are worrying since only 50% of the pupils are able to pass these exams. The rest of them that fail go into unemployment or start working under qualified jobs for the rest of their lives. They fail due to a very weak education system and due to lack of high-quality teachers that could guide and inspire them.
Another issue that we address is the lack of time: parents don't have time to take their children to tutoring sessions across town.

My solution is a social enterprise that connects highly skilled, passionate students to gymnasium or high-school pupils that need tutoring in various subjects. There are two dimensions to this project: tutoring for preparation of exams and mentoring for choosing a career path. I will create an online platform dedicated to this project. I will implement a virtual chalkboard for online, live sessions. The tutors will be selected very carefully based on their results and based on interviews. Children and teenagers looking for tutors will be able to register and select their tutor based on their bios published on the site. A calendar will be implemented so that sessions could be scheduled easily. The tutoring sessions will be paid at a convenient price, slightly lower that the tutoring market in place.

In a first phase of the project, I have to create the online platform suitable for online tutoring. Meanwhile I will start the recruitment of tutors for various fields: science, math, foreign languages, social studies. The tutors will be students doing their undergraduate studies, with a solid academic background and strong computer skills. I will post announcements on university camps.
After I have the website and the tutors database, I will officially launch the project. The key selling propositions will be related to the high quality of teachers, saving time for parents as all tutoring sessions are online and no time is wasted, and also the fair price. For the first month after the launch, all tutoring will be for free.
The project will have the following results: improvement of the results that Romanian pupils have at various exams; boost of their motivation; better results in school; financial independence for the tutors (students), saving time for parents. The project will make a difference in the tutors lives as well because many of them will feel that their work is significant and what they do is meaningful.

There is no other online platform for live tutoring in Romania. I have discovered many such websites worldwide, but not in Romania. There are some websites that claim to offer online tutoring, but in fact they do not offer live interaction between tutors and pupils - they only have recorded slides or videos.
Our competitors will be the teachers that provide classic tutoring at their home. There is a vivid debate about this practice, many considering it unethical (teachers tutoring their own students). According to the latest statistics, unofficial tutoring accounts for 30 million EUR per year revenues for teachers. These revenues are not declared at the fiscal authorities.
My project will be 100% transparent and all revenues will be declared to the authorities.

A recent study shows that approximately 600'000 pupils / year take tutoring classes in Romania. We assume that in the following 3 years we will get 1% of this market - meaning 6'000 students that will become clients of the social enterprise, some of them registering for multiple fields. In addition to this, we will be able to grant 100 scholarships / year to children from low income families that cannot pay the fees.

I have worked in education for the past 10 years. It disturbs me a lot to see our children failing at important exams with a huge consequence for their future. I know young people are drawn to technology and I believe they would be motivated to learn using online technologies. In the same time, I frequently meet with university students and they share with me their willingness to do something meaningful, to feel that their work improves the lives of other people. I believe communication is important, technology is important and both of them can contribute to the improvement of the education systems around the world. Maybe some of the students-tutors will feel inspired to pursue a teaching career in a time when teaching is not considered a desirable path. This project can have a positive impact on the lives of children, parents and tutors altogether and can boost national academic results.

Quels sont vos différents partenariats ?
I plan to conclude partnerships with technology companies and with companies that sponsor education projects. I will also apply for foundation grants.
