May 2012: Innovation Empowerment Programme's One Hen Campaign Project has won a Global Award in Geneva, Switzerland during a youth employment summit. We took position 2 worldwide and position 1 in Africa in a competition dubbed what’s working? in youth employment
http://yenmarketplace.org/news/competition-results-winners-announced
The competition was run by Youth Employment Network (YEN) which is a partnership of the United Nations (UN), International Labour Organization (ILO), and the World Bank set up after the Millennium Summit in 2001 to find new and durable solutions to the youth employment challenge. YEN is managed by a permanent secretariat hosted by the ILO in Geneva.
December 2011: Innovation Empowerment Programme's One Hen Campaign Project won 1st Global award in Durban, South Africa during the UN Climate Change Conference in a competition dubbed Connect4Climate Change sponsored by World Bank among other partners. We took position 2 in the Agriculture category for age group 18-24years.

The aim of Connect4climate change competition was to gather personal climate change stories from African youth and share them with the world. We were able to record a short 15-30 second video message of our CEO James Makini speaking to the camera and his message to the world leaders and decision-makers who gathered in Durban was captured. These were C4C questions. What would you like to say to the ministers and negotiators who will be discussing the future of our planet at this conference? Do you have any questions you would like to pose to the climate change policy-makers? Why do you think something must be done to combat climate change in Africa?

Depuis combien de temps le projet existe-t-il ?
En place depuis 1 à 5 ans
Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
Levels of poverty and unemployment are very high. There is a general lack of business skills, lack of skills to do farming as a business and poor access of credit.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Form self help groups.Train them for 3 months on poultry management, entrepreneurship, agribusiness, financial management, adaptation to climate change, value chain and addition. We award each with a Certificate and a hen and cage. From One hen one moves to a goat to a cow then to owning major businesses after one year and this in turn has not only created employment for himself but also others. When we give hens to youths in a given village we help them come up with a Village Agrovet where they buy and sell chicken feeds, drugs and other items to the group members and villagers at a large.Making the cages, we have devolutionalized it to the village level where all what is needed we acquire it within the territory of our self help groups.i.e. Labour, timber, wire-mesh and nails. The youths in a village who make cages are paid.We have Savings and credit cooperative for members where they do micro-saving of an egg per day and after regularly saving for one accesses microloan.
A member who is in a registered group is trained for 3 months on poultry management ,farming as a business and financial management. Then when he/she graduates is given a certificate, one hen and cage to rear as per the trainings and make it profitable within a year.Over this period a member does micro-savings to one hen sacco called Sky sacco Society ltd owned by the beneficiaries after 3 months is given a micro-loan to expand the business.
After 6 months one who was given 1 hen surrenders 2 pullets(once) for onward lending and sustainability of the project.Research has shown us that the "most careless farmer" given one hen for a whole year it will give him/her 100 hens! a farmer that we have trained exceeds 100 hens in one year. One hen goes at Kshs.400 multiplied by 100 hens is Kshs. 40,000 per year equivalent to a dairy cow. One can graduate from owning a hen, a goat, cow then big businesses out there.
Our competitors are the already established microfinance organisations who have a huge revolving fund to advance as loans to members compared to ours which is small that at times we dont meet demand from our members.
Other organisations that are rearing indigenous hens in large scale. We scramble for markets. But with availability of resources we have cut a niche that no one can easily outdo us because our poultry business is coupled with trainings to members, the risk is well spread as members rear hens individually and we support them financially through the sacco to expand the business.

Impact social
Me and my 3 colleagues in campus at The University of Nairobi school of business the year 2009 searched for internship for 3 holidays but all was in vain. We sat down and counted our misfortunes of unsuccessfully seeking internship and we asked ourselves what about a job? and then we thought of how we can create employment for ourselves and others. We then mooted the idea of starting small through the micro-savings we had from our Higher Education Loan. We thought of giving youths and women in villages a loan in form of an indigenous hen and a cage and after 6 months they return 2 pullets(once)for onward lending and sustainability, before we could start we sold the idea to one of the farmers(Philip)we met in the village he was extremely excited with the idea. We decided to pilot with him within 6 months he had amazing results with 65hens! which he subsequently sold and bought a cow. As we speak today is a role model and our field manager his story has inspired thousands who have joined.
To create employment for youths and women i.e. instilling a sense of self-reliance to them.
Enable access of credit to rural areas and other financial management trainings.
Enable rural communities create wealth and actively contribute in economic development of the nation.
The unemployed youths in rural Kenya who have cleared high school,school-dropouts, those who have cleared from tertiary institutions and are waiting for government to give them jobs.
Women- young and old in most rural areas in Kenya they are the backbone of the economy but most of them lack crucial business skills and access to affordable credit. They also need agribusiness skills to help turn-around their businesses.
This project can be replicated in other regions across the world as rearing of chicken in most rural homesteads is the order of the day. Hence approaching such communities from the perspective of the hen resonates very well with them as its the nearest income generating activity they can relate with. Hence using it to train them agribusiness and financial management adds value to them i.e. giving them one and a cage for protection of chicks during multiplication and returning 2 for onward lending relates with the normal loan they get from banks but the difference is on interest where they return chicks.
In most African countries i.e Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda e.t.c the project will do excellently well.
Thousands of jobs could have been created in rural areas and this will in turn curb the challenge of rural urban migration which has dimmed development in most rural areas as young people move to towns to look for jobs and leave the old ones at home who can not actively participate in agriculture and its the one that is the backbone of the economy.
Youths and women in most rural areas who have mostly been marginalized in terms of financial services will be fully incorporated and benefited from the trainings that will help them develop self esteem and confidence in establishing and running businesses.
Que faut-il modifier pour y parvenir?
The approach to the rural communities from what they know to the unknown. The financial and agribusiness trainings before members are advanced with credit. Emergency of homegrown role models who will be relevant to upcoming village entrepreneurs. The role models will in turn be mentors of others A mentor can serve as a teacher (sharing knowledge and skills), a guide (sharing insights step by step), a counselor (listening and supporting), and a coach (encouraging and motivating).
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs created, such as cage-makers, village agrovets, and chicken butchers.
In a village with approximately 500 people, about 70 new enterprises emerge when we start a youth and women group.
So far we have advanced micro-loans to a tune of Kshs. 5,000,000 to village youth and women groups in rural Kenya with 85% repayment rate.We have also a risk management credit life cover for loanees
Improved nutrition from eating highly nutritious indigenous chicken meat and eggs. This can be shown by medical reports from local dispensaries. Members who have benefitted from our project show a stable and promising state of health as opposed to those from those areas where we have not exploited. For example chicken meat is classified as white meat and is usually prescribed for diabetic patients.
Qualitatively, the One Hen Campaign has created the culture of self reliance among the youths, going beyond chicken farming to other income generating activities.
Transformation into a bank serving rural homesteads in Kenya and beyond.
Separation of the chicken entity but remain under one holding within the programme.
Double digit growth every year in the next first years.
