Describe Your Idea

Innovation

Describe your idea in fewer than 50 words.

I want to start an educational institution from early childhood to college level. I call it the three in one educational institution. It will offer free education on all levels

What makes your idea unique?

It is unique in that it has all the levels in one institution. It is also unique in that it shall not depend on external funding to run, but instead shall have income generating activities and projects incorporated to ensure that it is financially independent as well as sustainable.

What is your area of work? (Please check as many as apply.)

Children & Youth , Education , Development & Prosperity , Mentoring .

What impact have you had?

None so far. However we expect to:
• Empower people through proper and comprehensive education from an early age so that they can sustain their livelihoods and achieve financial independence
• Generate employment through the institution and its associated projects and activities
• A more educated and aware community as a consequence of the free education

Describe the primary problem(s) that your project is addressing.

Reliance on external solutions to local issues. I think this dependence is what inhibits true innovation and development in the communities we live in. Be it reliance on government or funding/donor agencies. The way to go is to champion and become self reliant.

Describe the steps that your organization is taking to make your project successful.

• Linking up with social networks online and face to face in order to get likeminded individuals to buy into the idea and its implementation
• We are working to finalize on the full proposal on the three in one institute that will cover operations, funding, sustainability and other relevant components

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Success in Year 1:

Getting people to buy into the idea

Success in Year 2:

Identifying a site in which the institute will operate from

Success in Year 3:

Cementing and implementing on the action plan

Do you have a business plan or strategic plan? (yes/no)

yes

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 1:

Getting the site that will serve as the three in one institute

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 2:

Sourcing for seed capital to begin the initiative

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 3:

Acquiring and training proper professional personnel to run the initiative from planning to implementation

Describe the expected results of these actions.

• Availability of proper and comprehensive education to more people in the community. Our institute will be a one stop shop for free education on all levels
• Through acquiring proper education, the community members will also come up with innovations on social ills in the community such as environmental degradation, diseases, water and sanitation and so on.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I schooled in Starehe Boys – one of the best if not actually the best school at the time- during my primary school years. In 1990 after I did my final primary exams, my marks could not allow me to go to the secondary level of Starehe Boys. Hence I have to go to a new institution which left me disoriented and quite lost as the institution was not as good at Starehe. I therefore have had a dream of coming up with an education institute that will cover all levels of learning so that once a child gets into the institute he grows through the ranks within an institution that is comprehensively looking out for his welfare.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

I am a primary school teacher teaching in Subukia, Kenya. I have a keen interest in early child hood development and intend to further my studies on this area. I have always had a driving need to help others and I feel that the best way to do this is through education. I am married with a son.
