Describe Your Idea
Innovation
Describe your idea in fewer than 50 words.
I would like to introduce computer studies for children in Kikuyu town, in the Outskirts of Nairobi. Children will learn computing skills as they reinforce the subjects taught in the classroom.
What makes your idea unique?
My Idea is unique because there are very few schools /centres offering similar services. I’m a computer studies teacher with experience and technical knowledge of the technologies offered. I have a wealth of experience accumulated for over 12 years working with the reputable Riara Group of School as the Head of I.C.T. This has given me challenges in networking both local area and wide area. I believe with this kind of experience, I can set up a digital education centre when children will learn computing skills, do their mathematics or other subjects taught in the traditional classrooms, submit their homework to school and or get results from their teachers. I have tested some of the software that I have with our networks (over 260 computers) and have verified that this technology works. I have also tested the software in other schools such as the Makini Schools, Brighton Kindergarten, Playstreet Kindergarten and Rose of Sharon School all in Nairobi.
What is your area of work? (Please check as many as apply.)
Children & Youth , Early childhood development , Education , Education reform , Communications , Technology , Ethics , Mentoring .
What impact have you had?
I have set up several networks for The Riara Group of Schools, Makini Schools, Brighton Kindergarten, Playstreet Kindergarten and Rose of Sharon School all in Nairobi. Thse networks are being used currently to reinforce subjects taught in the classrooms. I have gone ahead and connected the networks to the internet and guide them to access information from sites such as www.mathsisfun.com, www.kamusiproject.org, www.kidsgeo.com e.t.c. these are very good of sources of information especially in the specific subjects. This has considerable helped children improve in their academic work. Besides the above, cultivation of critical thinking is evident when you give outdoor obstacle challenges that require creativity and teamwork.
Describe the primary problem(s) that your project is addressing.
Effective and efficient use of technological changes for the betterment of our children’s and youth education and the country in general.
Describe the steps that your organization is taking to make your project successful.
After the arrival of the fiber optic technologies, coupled with the undersea cable that was launched recently in Kenya, I intend to get high speed internet connection. I intend to get the state of the art computer hardware and effectively install them. There after I will install children’s educative software which will propel the project.
Impact
What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Success in Year 1:
Consistent teaching and upgrading of both software and hardware facilities. Coupled with effective and dynamic marketing strategies I believe that the project will succeed.
Success in Year 2:
Evaluation of year 1 performance, changing strategies applied in the first year if they are not effective. There is also need to evaluate any competition that might emerge and be a threat to the survival of the business.
Success in Year 3:
Evaluation of year 2 performance, changing strategies applied in the Second year if they are not effective. There is also need to evaluate any competition that might emerge and be a threat to the survival of the business. I will also be looking for the best way to start other branches.
Do you have a business plan or strategic plan? (yes/no)
yes
What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 1:
Get Finance
Currently I’m saving with the Retirement Benefit Scheme so that I can realize this dream. I have saved over 50,000/= in the scheme which I intend to inject to the business as my start-up capital.
What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 2:
Set up an office
Once I set up an office, I will be able to contact the above mentioned companies and schools who have been my clients at the idea inception stage. I will continue offering them support services which will be another source of income for the company.
What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 3:
Marketing
Initially, I will need to market my new business to the local community and sign agreements with schools that have IT facilities and would wish to give homework that can be done online to their children.
Describe the expected results of these actions.
After the above has been done, I expect to get many clients who will be my regular customers. This will increase profitability of my organization.
What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?
As earlier mentioned, I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge working with the Riara Group of Schools. This school was among the first schools to set up computer studies laboratories in Kenya and especially in the 8+4+4 system of education. I have been working for the schools for the last 12 years. That means I have been involved in setting up computer centres for Riara and other clients. With this in mind, thought through the idea and started small time consultancy which has been sustaining my small company. At the moment, we operate from our house at Kidfarmco Estate in Kikuyu.
Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

How did you first hear about Changemakers?
I read about changemakers on the internet and also found an advertisement in the Daily Nation newspaper.

Viabilité
What would prevent your project from being a success?
Lack of adequate finance can lead to my business failure. This is one of my biggest challenges, but I have planned on how to counter it. In case there is an International failure of all Internet service providers in the world, then the business can fail. The later is practically impossible.
