Describe Your Idea
Innovation
Describe your idea in fewer than 50 words.
Early child Development has been viewed by educational psychologists as basic and fundamental to human cognitive growth and development. This project has been conceptualized to have a faith based early child development centre within the rural village centres which is safer for the vulnerable African child.
What makes your idea unique?
The African child has become very susceptible to animosity at all quarters. In many cases many children are left unattended by their parents at home at the risk of defilement and other heinous evils by relatives and strangers alike. Most schools in the rural areas of Kenya are government owned primary schools which are miles away. The only social institution that is easily accessible is the church. The church in its mission to evangelize and console has permeated almost all rural communities of Africa. However, most churches have concerned themselves with the plight of women and children in matters of safety and basic needs and have largely abandoned early childhood development.
AIC Koma Early Child Development Centre and Primary School has been coined to make a milestone to early childhood development in the marginal areas so as to empower the rural communities and make their children competent and competitive at tender ages so as produce useful youth who can initiate development in their rural areas. Education is power and authority. Giving the child early education in his/her rural environment will create a sense of responsibility over oneself against vices such as drug and substance abuse, diseases, self esteem and desensitization against social factors of underdevelopment. Further this centre is aimed at acting as a spring board to rural Church based Early Childhood centres that will educate the children on environmental health, conservation and safety for the wellbeing of the nation.
There are many community based youth development projects but just few addressing early childhood development. This project is aimed at growing to reach regional and global magnitudes in early child development.

What impact have you had?
The AIC Koma Early Child Development Centre and Primary School has created jobs for Early childhood Development Education teachers who have already been deployed to teach and train children. Many parents have entrusted their children to the centre for quality education and day care accorded under the core values of the centre. For the three years of operation of the centre there were no cases of defilement in the area. The children are escorted to the centre by their parents and are picked in the afternoon. This has ensured that the children are always monitored. In the past the rate of school dropouts had been alarming as older children had to be forced to stay at home to take care of their young siblings while the parents are working in the farm or herding cattle. Today cases of school dropouts have been reduced to zero.
There has been an educational wastage caused by the long distances to resources such as water and fire wood. The Centre through the assistance of World Vision constructed a water tank that provides clean water to the children in the centre and drinking water to visitors and parents when they are collecting their children.
The centre has made learning interesting to the young children. The effect it has had on education of the children is that many children have learned to share, etiquette, personal grooming, self worth and time management. In this case the number of the youth willing to help the children in the church has increased tremendously.
Describe the primary problem(s) that your project is addressing.
Poverty
The centre will empower the youth to gain educational competence that will give them gainful careers resulting into sustainable rural development.
Joblessness
This centre will create employment opportunities for the ECDE teachers and other support staff who will work in the centre.
Education For All
The highly subsidized cost to enable the parents to afford to pay up learning fees and levies attracts more children.
Creation of diseases awareness
The centre takes issue on diseases and create awareness on living in clean and healthy environmental to control diseases and reduce mortality rates.
Child abuse, stigma and Social evils
Children are made to understand social evils and guided on how to handle them.. The centre gives guidance and counseling services to the children and the youth on the issues of single parenthood, death, divorce of parents, marital battles, parents’ drug and substance abuse, coping with conflicts and frustrations among others.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?
I am a first born in my family, a graduate in agricultural engineering and with a diploma in technical education. During my childhood I went to class one only when I could touch my left ear with my right hand over my head at the age of about 9 years. Most days I was forced to remain at home to look after my siblings. Most of my school mate who were first born like me dropped from school before reaching class four because it was difficult for them to grasp English and Mathematics.
Particularly, many people in the village made fun of me and called me names. One day I swore to myself that I would work hard and be the best in school such that one day I will help children not to suffer like me. I had dropped in performance to position 34 out of 37 in class three then. I informed my mother of my idea to repeat class three and make my performance better and she called me a fool. I quietly told her to just allow me repeat and start preparing to pay up my school fees. She did not find it substantial at that moment. The following things changed. I started topping in my class and even topped in my final primary school examination. I joined a prestigious National school and qualified to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education.
Upon matriculation I have sought to mount my energies against establishing an institution to salvage the young potentials which are wasted in the villages.

The Story
Does your organization have any non-monetary partnerships with government? (yes/no)
yes
Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.
The church benefited from an NGOs - World Vision which aided in construction of a church hall, water tank and pastors’ house. These facilities have been a stepping stone for this projects. The church benefits from businesses in hosting and welcoming visitors. The church benefits from the government through registration and establishment of a bond between itself and the catchments primary schools which admit children after going through the training at the centre.
These partnerships are critical to my innovation in that they have formed the basic framework required for operation of the centre to realize its objectives. The innovation will require support and backup of the government regulations and policies to be congruent to operate in the country. The centre will work hand in hand with the business community to boost the livelihoods of the poor rural and marginalized areas.
