GATEWAY TRAILS INITIATIVE
Emplacement
We are encouraging change by installing “GATEWAY” trails in and around Paulding County. We are using IMBA’s model for constructing and implementing these trail systems. Gateway Trails trail systems will bring mountain biking recreation closer to millions of potential riders. GATE WAY TRAILS can be built in small parks next to greenways, playgrounds and ball-fields-to broaden the recreational offerings in suburban and urban communities.

Innovation
What makes your idea unique?
Obesity is on the rise at an alarming rate. We feel that a major cause for this rise in obesity is that kids are not riding bikes as much these days. We feel that trails provide an inviting yet infectious way of bringing people off the couch and onto a bike. We need more opportunities for the families of Paulding County to ride a mountain bike. We are installing these small mountain parks to act as puddle jumpers to stay in line with our mission. GATEWAY trails will encourage participation in regular physical activity.
Do you have a patent for this idea?

What impact have you had?
Pass successes include the Silver Comet side Trail. Paulding SORBA created a partnership with the Paulding County Parks and Rec. Dept. and The Paulding County Sherriff’s Office to initiate the maintenance and re-alignment of several dangerous sections. It includes 8 miles of intermittent single track that enters and exits the very popular Silver Comet Trail (a rail trail that extends the entire width of Paulding County) so that riders can take a break or ride the entire bi-directional trail out and back. It will soon be extended another 6-7 miles to the boundary of Paulding Forest Wildlife Management Area. 1400 volunteer hours went into resurrecting this trail in 2007.
We installed our first GATEWAY TRAIL project Sara Babb Park located in the city limits of Dallas houses 1.5 miles of trail and will soon give way to another 4 miles as soon as land acquisition has been settled. Over 1000 volunteer hours went into installing the Gateway trail at Sara Babb Park.
WE are working on another GATEWAY TRAIL project located also in Dallas on a county park / Mt. Tabor Park and currently houses 4.5 miles of trail in a stacked loop formation. This trail system will have 8-10 miles when it is completed. The park is very close to Roberts Elementary and talks have begun to start a pilot after school mountain bike program. We have completed 2 loops in under a year and accrued almost 3500 volunteer hrs in 2009.
We have just started a new park in Austell Ga. which will house close to 15 miles of trail. This park is located adjacent to Austell Government complex, Garret Middle School, and Clarkdale Park. We already have our first signature large work parties scheduled and have filled 100 confirmed volunteer slots.
Problem
FUNDING to purchase our needs...tools, lumber for bridges, food for volunteers, signs, etc.
Actions
We have been able to make the projects successful by putting many many hours of labor to install trails
Results
More trails = more people on bikes. We measured
What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.
Install a new park each year...
We need to be able to supply the tools needed to accomplish this goal. Trail tools all have a specific design and use. We also need to be able to transport tools from park to park by way of an enclosed trailer.
What would prevent your project from being a success?
Lack of volunteers...However over the past year since the install of Mt. Tabor park and Threadmill Park we have seen tremendous growth in both the ridership at the trails and membership within our club.
How many people will your project serve annually?

We need funding to purchace trail tools and other trail building equipment. So when we host a volunteer work party we dont have to ask the volunteer to bring their own tool.
The Story
What was the defining moment that you led to this innovation?
When the CDC put out a report about OBESITY and stated "During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. In 2008, only one state (Colorado) had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Thirty-two states had a prevalence equal to or greater than 25%; six of these states (Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia ) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%."
Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.
We felt that we needed to do something to get kids off the couch and we tried to think of a way to bring the experience closer to the communities.
