Ive volunteered with this program in the past. Soccer (futbol) is a powerful tool for economic empowerment, and not just for elite athletes. Young people are applying lessons they learn from the field to their career development. Way to go!

“Football is a good way to learn certain skills which you can apply in everyday life and at work. It is not about the technical aspect of the game, for example whether you can give a good pass, but about communicating with others, to work together. These are things that you also need in the labor market.”

I have been a mentor for this program and have seen first hand the benefits the program has for all partners involved (participants, mentors, government and teachers). It's a great program to bring everyone working together and benefit young people immensely.

I had the privilege of attending an A Ganar graduation ceremony in Colombia. It was an event I will not soon forget. What I was most struck by were the participants’ parents’ comments- many of them tearful, but all of them heartfelt. Before participating in A Ganar, the parents felt that their children were lost, without direction, or possibly even in danger. As a result of participation, parents reported that their children were much more engaged at home, and once again inspired by the possibility of life.

What a phenomenal program!

Two weeks ago I had the honor of spending a few days at a conference with an A Ganar graduate. Not only was she amazingly capable and talented, but she was employed. Ultimately we look for results from the many innovative sport for development programs that now exist. To see a young and talented person -- previously unemployed -- now with the skills, values and confidence developed through a program like A Ganar, but most importantly with a job, is the ultimate reward. There is no better return on investment.

I value the investment in people to sustain projects. It is not just about more money. I am reminded of an analogy regarding building a baseball team: At some point it is not about getting the best or even more bats and balls--you need to have some better ballplayers to win! Without dedicated and competent professionals and volunteers, programs like this won't continue. I appreciate the effort to build capacity in the people directly involved. Great work!
