Hi Satyen,
Seeing that most rural areas in India do not have reliable electrical or Internet networking systems, what are the solutions being considered to counter these issues? Are there any offline data entry methods (that could get updated as soon as there is connectivity)?

Also, does this help in more efficient delivery of milk by keeping a tab on supply and demand?

Thanks!

Yes. We do have electricity problems in the rural areas but we have kept the ups or inverter to ensure the sufficient power available for our business purposes. We have established a robust Wi-Fi connectivity as our network solutions.

Definitely because of this system we have been successful in narrowed the gap between demand and supply. We do keep all the records (with the timings) from the pickup point of the raw milk to the delivery to the consumers.

I would like to know more about : how can mobile phones can be better used in this solution?

ven, 06/11/2010 - 05:24

Mobile phone can be used for accessing our Animal Information System.

We have given the palmtop which is loaded with software (Herdman) and given to the doctor. He maintains each information of cattle in the s/w and when he goes for the treatment, he refers the history of the cattle (which medicines were given and the past heath record). Accordingly he gives the suitable medicine to the cattle. He enters the medicine data in the palmtop and through the GSM cloud it gets connected to the central Database and the data gets stored for the use of management information system. AIS help us in marinating inventory of medicine as well.

Satyen, congratulations for this initiative! I will like to understand the break even point. You answerede NO when asked if the social entreprise has reached break even This means that the business is not yet self sustainable? Fur us, it is important to understand if the cooperative receives donations or grants, or all the operations are covered by earned income.
Thanks a lot
Paula

Our business is very sustainable and profitable. Since we are the Co-Operative, we pass on all the profits to our stake holders (Farmers). In fact, last year we could share (transfer) a amount of Rs. 3.5 billion to our stake holders. We are self sustained and well growing organization.

Dear Satyen,

According to your experience what are the main barriers or challenges so that social business model can thrive?

Since the education level at villages is quit low and advantages of computerization is not known to them, it’s little difficult to convince the milk co-operative producer (farmer) that by use our software for his business, it would be easy for him to do his daily business transactions and he can increase the profitability of the business.

In the initial stage, village society members were hesitated to adopt the new technology, but after the successful implantation at various places, the current situation is such that they are demanding for the computerization.
