As a student of the South Bronx, I know first hand how important a program like Kids-Helping-Kids is. This program offers an alternative to children who would instead join up with gangs or become involve in crime and show poor academic skills and participation in school activities. Kids-Helping-Kids in not a program of adults telling children what to do, but teens mentoring younger children with their own knowledge and experience in the same situation the youngsters are in now.
This is a great Idea!
The program gives the older kids the boost in self esteem that comes from being able to positively impact the lives of others.The rewards that come from being a role model are self perpetuating!"I want these young ones to see me as a winner!"
The younger kids see how other kids in their situation can overcome adversity to go on to achieve a stable happy life!"When I grow up I want to be like my mentor, and I can!"
There is no-one more able to reach a kid than another kid.Kids recognize in one another a verisimilitude and become a kind of family, filling a need for real trustworthy support.
This program can work in a place that has been all but abandoned by everyone out side it's own community! It builds strength in lasting ways that will spread like the roots of a tree to hold together a community.
This is a very innovative program by an expert who has worked in this field for many years and knows what is possible using limited resources and locally trained personnel. It is a program which can motivate young people not only to help themselves but also to help others with whom they have a natural empathy and as such is much needed and could be a model across the United States. I am a physician who has treated many people AIDS doctor and have seen a many children trying to deal with the sickness and death of parents. This appears to be a singularly novel and creative way to do it which can actually work.
