Location

Atlanta and Kolkata

The Cross Stitch Project uses new media technology to build connections between teen girls in the United States and India. Young women share personal video accounts of their lives and experiences, and are invited to participate in arts and crafts projects that raise funds for secondary education for girls in India. The programs allow the young women to share creative and design talents and develop cross-cultural communication and peer leadership skills.

Reason:

The Cross Stitch Project focuses creativity and technology to develop confident, powerful self-expression. By connecting students to work with up-to-date technical skills on creative, yet traditionally based projects, we require girls to develop their skills, communicate their achievements, and market their traditionally based products. This creates a tangible link between traditional labor and its integration into the new technological economy. The Cross Stitch Project believes that developing the confidence to tell your own story translates into power over anyone trying to devalue your voice. Cross Stitch wants girls to be heard and seen!
