he Pallitathya Help Line improves access to health information for rural people using mobile phones. Mobile Operator Ladies, who are local, educated, young women, travel door-to-door in villages with a mobile phone, listen attentively to villager’s problems and assist them in asking questions and receiving the appropriate answer from an expert at a Help Desk who respond to the women's queries with the use of a database-driven software application and the Internet. Participants have reported greater self-worth, increased incomes, and increased authority over spending decisions through use of the service.
Reason:
Pallitathya Help-Line (a Call Center for the Poor and Under-privileged) project of D.Net won the first prize of the Gender and ICT Awards for 2005. The Award was announced during Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) Forum held on 27-30 October 2005 in Bangkok , Thailand
