TWIST - Towards Women In Science and Technology

Location

Jerusalem
Israel

TWIST is a joint initiative of the Bloomfield Science Museum Jerusalem and the EU. It seeks to encourage high school girls to choose science and technology tracks by facilitating activities, for the general public and groups from the formal education framework, that raise awareness of the issue of gender equality in science. These activities are centred on interactive and innovative technology-based exhibits at the Museum, such as TWISTY, a virtual character who confronts visitors about their prejudices about women and science.

Reason:

We are nominating the project as it makes an important step forward in providing a creative and innovative solution to a real problem that Israel faces. That is, that despite the excellence girls show in science at a young age, they do not later go on to specialise in related areas. Amongst the Arab population, the number of women who study science at a higher education level is much smaller that the number of men. This is even more pronounced amongst the Jewish population, where the gap is noticeable even at the high school level. This project goes to the root of the problem and seeks to catalyse social change in the academic arena.
