Birding & Rainforest Conservation in Peru

The Amazon rainforest is a fascinating place for nature enthusiasts. Life seems to grow everywhere, trees reach impressive heights capturing carbon dioxide, and the canopy level of the Amazon rainforest becomes a party of colors and sounds every day.

The birds of the Amazon region have adapted to live at different levels of the rainforest, such as the ground level, the understory, and the canopy level, from where it is possible to observe the most colorful and curious species, sharing an incredible experience for all visitors.

In 2004, aware of the value of transmitting this experience to understand the real importance of conservation, Inkaterra Association (ITA) started the project 'Inkaterra: An alliance for biodiversity conservation and community development', with the support of the World Bank’s Global Environment Fund (GEF), which was directed to the construction of a system of bridges, 27 feet high above the ground, called the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, which allows guests to experience the forest from the treetops and to share the activities of tanagers, cotingas, toucans, parrots, hummingbirds and other species that live at that level of the rainforest. Since the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway was installed, it has facilitated the monitoring of bird species which researchers and visitors are able to admire and photograph from a privileged place. Inkaterra gave one step further creating the Inkaterra Canopy Tree House, where birders are able to experience life with birds in their natural habitat.

With over 450 different species, the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest provides remarkable bird watching at Tambopata National Reserve. Since ITA started its extensive researches and conservation efforts in Tambopata allow Inkaterra’s guests enjoy the lodge’s outstanding facilities and the amazing nature, which funds support at the same time conservation and sustainable tourism programs.
