"Change is a thought and not an activity Shikshalaya is working to impart that thought within people."
Urban students have a lot of things to do apart from school, like coaching classes, art, music, computers etc. which creates separate learning spaces for them, and are very important in an education system like India's. But rural students don't even have basic facilities like libraries and computer education. And Shikshalaya was born as a resource center where students get together to learn from each other. It is a center with some basic facilities like library and computers. The whole model is conceptualized by few students of a tribal village. They even named it themselves.
On the other hand all the rural development activities in the villages are either done by NGO's coming from towns or are executed by government. Rural residents usually don't even have an idea about their concept. Micro finance is just another way of borrowing money and Water shed is just another infrastructure development for them. SHikshalaya is acting as a platform to prepare upcoming rural youngsters with a clear concept of rural development, so that they can act as real and long term change agents for their village.
Shikshalaya is working to equip them with important skills like computer education and soft skills, as well as they are exposed to all rural development activities like watershed, organic farming, poultry etc.. And above all they are being prepared as perfect rural citizens.
Problem
Gram Panchayats[rural parliaments]are flooded with money and schemes by Indian government, but we are still not able to achieve the change we wish to see in rural India. The problem we see is that all the rural development works are executed by Social work graduates or government officers. But if we'll observe the successful programs like green revolution and other rural development programs the difference is, it was something understood by the beneficiary and then they connected themselves to it.
For long term changes it is important to create the thought of rural development within rural youth. We have targeted the age group of 14-20 years as these are the upcoming rural youngsters.
