Dharavi is one of the biggest slums in Asia. 67% of the Dharavi community, including women and young children are drug-users. Drugs use is so prevalent due to unemployment, lack of awareness of health risks, lack of nutrition and lack of education.
Every one heard about dharavi in dharavi have a more crime. In this dharavi get we more cheater. Yes its true. In between dharavi we seen the more crime, cheating, gambling etc. Dharavi is the largest slum of Asia with a population exceeding 5million crowded in a 10 kms radius. In dharavi I am not see the well ground. But I see the more building, more industry, and is more roots also etc.
In this community why is more crime beocuse hears youth they don’t have any skills. They are not a uneducated. They do for live gambling, playing cards, cheating etc. becouse the 8000 tons of waste generated daily by the city cannot be entirely picked up by the municipal corporation, and the gap is filled by Mumbai's rag-pickers who pick up the tons of garbage littering the streets. For this work they are not paid by the city and the city does not recognize them as a workforce. These thousands of children women and youth earn a living by selling the dry waste to scrap dealers, and most of the rag-pickers make barely 75-100 rupees a day. After they take the drugs and they gone in drugs.
There are more than 300 bars selling all types of liquors. And in dharavi we see the more drugs seller.

Problem

Our Vision is "Reduce The Addiction with craze of Sports" "Create The Healthy Environment Through By Sports" Our Mission Is "Organizing sports activities and coaching for children and youth in Dharavi and Wadala. " Create awareness among various age groups with a focus on de-addiction "

Solution

From our informal meetings with the drug users we have observed that most of them take drugs because they are not actively engaged in any skilled work and are easily influenced by friends and local drug dealers. In our conversations with these youth we have seen they have a keen interest in sports and their development, but they lack guidance and support to help them cope with the situation. We at Unity foundation, feel that we will be able to gather these youth through sports especially Karate and Cricket as most of the youth aspire to be healthy but are unable to do so as they do not have a strong support system. We through this medium of sports and personal counseling will be offering support to these youth to help them build their lives. Our main objective through sports is to get these youth together and get them to actively participate in our activities leaving them less or no time to consume drugs. Once we get them to part of the programmed, then we will guide them to live a healthy life and offering them vocational training so that they can build their skills. Once they have learn some skills we would offer them placement opportunity depending on their interest and skills.

Example

My date of birth is 19th Feb. 1988. I was born into a poor house in Dharavi slum. When I was 4 years old, our family condition was so bad that we lived on the road, we survived on a meal of just bread and chilies. I did my primary and secondary education in Marathi medium Government school. I was very intelligent student in school and college. Along with studies, I enjoyed all sports but I had a special liking towards Karate and Cricket. I learnt to play cricket on the streets of Dharavi and I had become really good at it. I have a very clear memory of the time my father bought me my first Cricket bat. He wanted me to play cricket professionally and become a star. But when I tried to join the cricket coaching club, I couldn’t get admission because we couldn’t afford it. When I was passed S.S.C Board exam with 61.57% marks. My parents started dreaming of making me a doctor. But because of the financial problem at home, I decided to work instead of continuing my education. It was then that I got into bad company. I had rich friends who offered me drugs and I got addicted to heroin. When they ran out of money to buy drugs, we started working for a local goon (Topori Bhai). As part of that work, we would go fight for him in return for money. I gave some of that money at home, but they did not know where the money was coming from. During those times, I used be tired a lot and sometimes would not even be able to stand up. After 1.5 year I went to live in my aunt’s house for a couple of weeks where I could not access any drugs. During that time I analyzed my life and decided to quit using drugs. That is when I started going through withdrawal symptoms. Intense drug use had made my body very weak and I suffered from asthma, fatigue, psychological weakness. On my return home, I started taking karate classes because my goal was to improve physical stamina. I told my friends how karate helped me improve my stamina after I quit drugs. They were very impressed but didn’t join me for any karate classes. But there were 6 kids who were interested in joining and I started teaching karate in Sion Port. 3 months later, the number of karate students increased to 30. They found out for themselves that when they reduced taking drugs their stamina increased. During this time, many of them restarted their education and some others got good jobs. This is when I decided to start Unity Foundation. As its name suggests, Unity Foundation is about coming together to support each other to reduce drug addiction.

By showing the connection between drug use and stamina (through karate, football and health reports), we educate the youth to understand the implication of drugs on their health. We also encourage them to build a new future by providing teaching classes for drop-outs, vocational training and placement opportunities.
