Select the stage that best applies to your solution

Idea (you're poised to launch)

How long have you been in operation?

Still in idea phase, but looking to launch soon

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your innovation addresses? Choose up to two

Cost, Quality.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Prevention of spread of disease from physician/healthcare provider stethoscopes to patients

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

The Aerospray Stethoscope Sterilizer is a wall mounted unit to disinfect stethoscope heads by spraying an alcohol mist on both sides of the head. The alcohol spray nozzles are triggered by placing the stethoscope head on the movable platform and pushing it into the unit. Alcohol is a known disinfectant for medical products. Advantages are reducing hospital acquired infections, better patient safety and significant healthcare costs reduction.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

Multiple organisms, especially Staphylococcus species are a growing concern. MRSA which is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has become a potential killer and this has also been shown to spread between the patients via physician stethoscopes. The spread of MRSA is difficult to control because MRSA does not always cause infection or clinical manifestations. However, good hospital hygiene can curb the rapid spread of this organism. There are a number or surveys that have shown that cleaning with isopropyl alcohol can reduce contamination and this has been recommended by major medical associations. Of growing concern is the stethoscope contamination used in neonatal intensive care units where it has been found that 71% of stethoscopes had bacterial growth and this was reduced to about 30% after cleaning procedure with alcohol.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Local area hospitals have a combination of a little more than a 1000 hospital beds. With use of the hospital stethoscope at about four to six times a day per patient , cleaning would be required to be done with every visit to the patient totaling about 5000 sprays hits a day. We would have to manufacture the cartridge in a volume that would at least allow changing it on a scheduled basis every month, which would give us at least 12,000 cartridge orders per year. This would be extrapolated and the product should catch on to cover the entire 5000 hospitals in the country and will be expanded to cover the world

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

I thought of the above invention while rounding on a patient in June 2010. He had ”Multiple Drug Resistant Organism” precautions and I was required to wear a gown, gloves and mask. However there were no precautions for my stethoscope. There was a plastic stethoscope provided outside the room which was more like a plastic toy used by children. I used a glove to cover my stethoscope. It was then that I conceived the above idea. I had not written any description of it until now when I read “Patent it yourself” by David Pressman.

Please describe the goal of your initiative; outline what you are trying to achieve

Stethoscopes are the most widely used medical devices in the medical community. They are used by doctors, nurses, and medical students. Stethoscope cleaning has become a standard of care as is handwashing. There is more concern over alcohol swabs cleaning the stethoscopes heads and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has got tough on infection reporting as well as prevention of healthcare-associated infections. There is evidence that stethoscope diaphragms are vectors of potentially pathogenic bacteria. References have included articles and studies in major medical journals in the last 15 to 20 years.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

Development of this product has reached a prototyping stage. Initial response for healthcare providers is great. We are trying to develop a working prototype for the idea at present

What is your projected impact over the next five years?

Local area hospitals have 1000 hospital beds. With use of the hospital stethoscope at about 4-6 time/day per patient , cleaning is required to be done with every visit to the patient totaling about 5000 sprays hits a day. We will manufacture the cartridge in a volume that would at least allow changing it on a scheduled basis every month, which would give us at least 12,000 cartridge orders per year. This would be extrapolated and the product should catch on to cover the entire 5000 hospitals in the country. Initial cost would include the apparatus and recurring cost would be the alcohol-filled cartridges. This product is unique in the fact of having a simple design, an important function as well as great future recurring orders which will make it a sustainable and profitable product.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

Development of working prototype: we are working with the Oenn State Engineering students to work on the project for further development of the product
