The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Shatayu aims to solve the problem of shortage of vital organs. Every 18 minutes, a new name is added to the transplant waiting list. 15 people die each day due to the shortage of transplantable organs. In India, every year 80,000 deaths occur via road accidents, and 50% of these are brain deaths. If organs could be harvested from even 5% of these deceased patients, there would be no need of any living person to donate an organ ever. Thus, theoretically, there is no shortage of donors. The only problem is there is not yet any structured institutionalized cadaver transplant program in India, that could wipe away the problem of rampant kidney commerce in the country. Despite having the world’s highest number of deaths from road accidents, only 0.05 per million people donate their organs

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

Shatayu, aims to form a centralized system for cadaver transplants. A central registry should be formed where a convenor should maintain the waiting list of all the patients who need a transplant. This will help in reducing duplication of entries amongst hospitals. This will also help in allocation of organs on priority basis for critical organs like liver, heart and lungs. A central registry will assure a transparent and fair allocation of vital organs and also encourage more donors.
A central registry will distribute organs amongst the hospital on order basis which will reduce the competition amongst the hospitals , as a result of which there will be no organ wastage. Also, more lives will be saved in the process.
This registry will also help in counseling all prospective donors to consider organ donation which was otherwise not done. More organs will be donated and many will get a new chance at life.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

Shatayu’s model for cadaver transplant program is simple and effective. The following steps would explain the model for a cadaver transplant program
1.A website needs to be maintained for the entire program to be transparent.
2.A convenor will be appointed who will maintain the database of waiting list of patients for different organs.
3.The hospitals are required to maintain their individual waiting lists and upload the details of the kidney waitlist through an online form on the maintained website according to the date of the first dialysis.
4.For liver, heart and lung patients the hospitals can establish their own criteria on the basis of which they can prioritize the allocation of organ.
5.One kidney ( called ‘Local’) goes to the Hospital where the donation takes place. If the donation takes place in a non transplant hospital both kidneys become share kidneys
6.Second kidney called share kidney will be allocated according to the order formed for allocation amongst the hospitals.
7.For organs like Heart, Liver and Lung, two types of waitlists may be maintained, standard and urgent, depending on the condition of the recipient. First priority would be given to the patient on the urgent waiting list.

1.Patients who need an urgent transplant for organs like heart, liver and lung, would get the first priority.
2.There will be no duplication of entries
3.A fair and equitable distribution system for donated organs
4.Organ wastage and illegal organ trade will be avoided.
5.More lives will be saved, as more people can be counselled to donate organs.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Very few organizations are working for the cause of organ donation in our country. These organizations are working on the same lines as Shatayu in different cities of India. These organizations working for the cause of organ donation are our peers. The competitors would be the hospitals which are currently carrying out the highest number of transplants due to rivalry amongst various hospitals. These hospitals may not cooperate and participate in the program and may prove to be a hindrance or a barrier in successful implementation of the cadaver transplant program.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

Dipak Patel fought bravely against the clutches of death and emerged victorious. He had to go to South Africa in 2004 to get his heart transplanted. It is a prohibitively expensive procedure but fortunately for him,he was able to go through with it.But it forced him to think about the millions of his poor and emaciated countrymen. When he thinks of how much smoother things were for him because he had easy access to all the right resources, he feels more grateful than ever. But if he had not been able to afford it...even the mere thought is enough to send shivers down his spine. He knew that heightened public awareness could raise the cadaver organ donations in the country and India could rid herself of the problem of organ shortage. Slowly, he started toying with the idea of an organization that spreads awareness about this burning issue in India. Today, Dipak is the proud founder and chairman of Shatayu-an organ donation awareness initiative started in 2009 by him, that spreads knowledge

Please describe the goal of your initiative; outline what you are trying to achieve

The goal of our initiative is to offer every Indian the opportunity and right to receive direct information about organ donation, and to instill in every Indian the willingness to gift a new lease of life to fellow beings. Our goal is to save as many lives as possible by motivating people to donate organs. We believe that no life should be lost due to shortage of organs. We want every individual to realize the importance of donating organs and giving the gift of life. We are trying to achieve maximum number of cadaver donations in the world by creating awareness and motivating people to give the gift of life.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

The impact of our solution has been amazing. We have been able to make more than 5,00,000 people aware about the importance of organ donation through various medias and have been successful in inspiring them to donate organs. Our 24 hour helpline service has helped a lot of people to donate their love ones organs and tissues by guiding them and connecting them with various transplant hospitals.

What is your projected impact over the next five years?

Eventually, we wish to expand our model in other cities of India. Since our goal is to save more lives by inspiring people to donate organs, we seek to partner with other organizations working for the same cause in our country. We believe that within 5 years, we will be able to set up this system in minimum five cities across the country. In the next 5 years we will be able to increase the current rate of 0.05 per million donations to a five times higher by implementing the central system across various cities throughout the country. We will then build a network within different cities to form a network for organ sharing which is currently not prevalent in our country. We also aim to involve the Government in setting up a centralized system to streamline the Cadaver Transplant Program

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

Our project might be hindered by the lack of cooperation from the transplant as well as non transplant hospitals, since this initiative involves full cooperation from all the parties. We believe that if the Government steps in and passes various orders to streamline the procedure than this hindrance can be overcome. We will try to overcome this hindrance by trying to garner support from the government for the same. Also, we will convince the hospitals of the benefits of the program and involve them in forming a network for organ sharing, thus help them participate in saving lives.

Tell us about your partnerships

We are currently partnering with various transplant as well as non transplant hospitals in our city to successfully implement this model. We have also partnered with other organizations working for the same cause and developed a training model for trained transplant coordinators.

Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your innovation? If so, where and why?

We are currently targeting the hospital nursing staff as well as the intensive care unit staff and training them for effective counselling to coordinate a transplant. Besides we are also targeting people from various backgrounds to create awareness about organ donation.

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

The success of our program depends on the people involved in it. So, we need people who are positive and passionate about the cause of organ donation and willing to devote their time for saving lives. Good communication, public relations and cooperation from various networks will also help in making the program successful.

Please elaborate on any needs or offers you have mentioned above and/or suggest categories of support that aren't specified within the list

We need a group of passionate people who believe in the cause to save lives and also funds to help appoint a transplant coordinator in each hospital so as to counsel the relatives of potential donors.
