The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
There is dearth of proper healthcare information among the people. People in India lack the basic effective information on sanitation and healthcare. If the right information is available at the right time, about 30% of the ill fated cases could be prevented. We target this deficiency through our service MediBeep, that primarily begins with a vaccine based alert system.
Rural: Its not just vaccinations, there is a general dearth of healthcare information. We aim to spread essential information on baby care. For eg: many people are unaware know that ORS is water+sugar+salt, resulting in mammoth mortality cases among infants due to diarrhea.
Urban: Urban India is health conscious but very busy. With both parents working, parents tend to miss important deadlines, we keep them reminded.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Superficially, our service aims to remind parents about their child's vaccination dates. The way we see it,a user has just entered our service since a child is born and then provide him with relevant information.
We are a free SMS based vaccination reminder service. The service is SMS based. Regional languages are supported.
Parents can register with us by SMS us the date of birth of their child and we would keep them reminded. The registration could also be done online, target group for this would be the urban masses.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
People would be reminded of vaccination dates and can get the needful.
In a rural setup, for instance: Kamala is a daily wage laborer,a mother of an infant. She has very limited knowledge about any healthcare aspect of baby care. Seeing the information provided at the local civil hospital where the baby was born, her husband has registered the baby with us in a language which he understands. Now, he would provide him information on important vaccinations, which he can get at the govt hospital itself. He also would receive regular alerts on his mobile phone which will at least clear a lot of misconceptions and enable healthier child care and support.
In Urban Area, for instance: Reema is a working mother. With a lot of dates that she has to track already and with a very hectic work schedule, she might tend to forget the key dates regarding baby care. Now she would receive not one, but three reminders to help her plan well in advance and ensure that the baby is vaccinated timely. On top of it, she would also get baby care tips to ensure that the baby grows fit and fine.
In a bigger picture, after the vaccination stage is over, we would go back to our users with further services like effective child care, child education tips, effective parenting and will try and offer the user the right information at the right time and aim to create a positive social change.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
Many government agencies have been trying to do a similar service but have failed. These are our biggest competitors but their inefficiencies have led to their failure at in-numerous occasions. However, we see them as our biggest ally and have started to partner with them.
Similar initiatives have been by many small scale organizations, but they failed in scaling it up and due to predominant web based registrations, they lost on a very big share of users.
We are differentiated by our approach in targeting both the rural and urban audience as both need the service and appreciate it. Our registration system is internet free, all a person needs is a mobile phone. While our peers have failed to scale up rapidly, we plan to employ national networks of Jagriti yatra and NEN to help us scale up.
This Entry is about (Issues)
Social Impact
Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.
Our Aha moment was when in spite of living in a joint family of 10 educated though busy members, we missed a vaccine date of my new born nephew, the only baby/kid in our family. Realization became stronger when we got to know from the doctor that it is common for people to miss dates like this. We realized the importance of an alert service. We explored the power of mobile and SMS applications and took a step ahead to reach the masses.
We realized that the situation is dire in rural India, its not just about alerting the dates, but also cascading the right information at the right time. Hence, MediBeep was born, targeting both the urban and rural masses.
Please describe the goal of your initiative; outline what you are trying to achieve
We want parents to be informed about their dear baby, important dates and basic healthcare know hows. We want at least the basic healthcare tips and information to reach the people and would try to fill the information gap.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
We have just launched the service and would reach about 500 registrations soon.
What is your projected impact over the next five years?
In next 5 years, we would have reached to more than 2 million subscribers across different regions in India. We would also roll out further products for healthcare promotion such as pregnancy tips, child care tips, effective parenting tips and so on.
Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact
In six months, we plan to get about 100,000 registrations.
Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your six-month milestone
Task 1
Hire 10 volunteers both paid and non paid to help us promote the service.
Task 2
Partner with State Governments in India to promote this service
Task 3
Expand the IT infrastructure from which the service is currently run.
Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone
12 month impact is to get about 250,000 registrations and launch one more SMS base information service on care during pregnancy.
Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your 12-month milestone
Task 1
Register the company
Task 2
Increase the volunteer base to about 25 people, working part time for us for about 12 hrs a week.
Task 3
Permanently Hire 3 staff,1 to manage IT, 1 for coordinating volunteers and 1 for getting corporate sponsorship
Sustainability
Tell us about your partnerships
We have established partnership with the Rotary youth network. We are in talks with the Lions Club network and Govt. of Bihar, India to help us promote this service. We are already leveraging our networks withing the IIT Community, NEN network and Tata Jagriti Yatra Community.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your innovation? If so, where and why?
No. We believe both urban and rural populace who are parents of new born are our targets. We want to spread the service across all India States, within a time frame of 1 year.
What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?
The environment should be that of a team work where people feel proud of the registrations they bring in and are driven by the results they see. Energy , self motivation and the ability to drive things are very important.
We need creativity to innovate and explore alternate medium of publicity and also roll out further products in the future.
Please elaborate on any needs or offers you have mentioned above and/or suggest categories of support that aren't specified within the list
Investment would be for a brief period for the first 6 months to help us grow and reach the new level. After that, we would attain financial sustainability.
We would need talent and human resources to scale up and expand.
We need to grow our network within the healthcare and government space to achieve higher levels of growth.
Ideas and Mentorship, we always appreciate them :).
