Select the stage that best applies to your solution

Start-Up (a pilot that has just begun operating)

How long have you been in operation?

Operating for less than a year

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your innovation addresses? Choose up to two

Access, Cost, Transparency, Quality, Equity.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

The access to care, second opinion and education in the low resource setting areas, poorest and isolated communities

The far education, isolation and the laking of communication and infrastructure in developing countries

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

use of mobile for taking and transmit (where it is possible) the diagnostic images, also without internet connection
This system is a potent tool for second opinion and also for the education

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

The method is very simple: First, one simply approaches the lens of the integrated cell-phone camera to the ocular of the microscope and takes the picture. The idea is free of cost. It is obviously possible to use the same technique to take pictures from the ocular of any other bio-medical optical device. This is practicable and, where possible, to send image from microscope, dermatological, ultrasound, rx, etc., as a very simple telemedicine. Second , it is a potent tool for training because students are fascinated and can learn immediately and easily about the medicine, laboratory microscopic technologies and has the same method as taking pictures and in any context

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

No I not have peers or competitors
I believe to be the only one
In literature there are no are experiences of images taken from the microscope with a cellular phone without any device or adaptor

Social Impact

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world.

In 2008, while I was working as a pathologist on the Italian Island of Lampedusa I found myself in the urgent need to confirm a diagnosis of malaria from a blood sample of an African immigrant. With no other means at hand, I took a picture of the microscopic field using the camera incorporated in mobile-phone, without additional devices, and sent it via MMS for tele-diagnostic purposes to a reference center.
The Mobilediagnosis life has been possible thank to Eduardo Missoni, that understood immediately the power of my work
with Eduardo Missoni ,in 2009, we published the method and create the first link
and in 2010 we found the Mobilediagnosis Association
Mobilediagnosis was born

Please describe the goal of your initiative; outline what you are trying to achieve

For Community
Increase of number and typology of analisis , introduction of
microscope related-analisis
Decrease of patients migration to care
Decrease expenses travel related
Increase Exact diagnosis,
diseases  screening for parasite disease (malaria, soil
worms) and malnutrition decrease ,  will warrant a better life
quality, and decrease mortality under five
Final result, will be a better life for Community
For healthworkers
Possibility to have earlier diagnosis, and, if need, earlier and planned
hospitalition of risk patient
Shared Diagnosis, can help to evaluate real emergences.
Possibility to have training and create a network
between doctor low-skill with doctor high skill
Improve relationship between health workers and with patients

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

Increase of number and typology of analisis , introduction of
micoscope related-analisis
Decrease of patient migration to care
Decrease expenses travel related and save
Increase Exact diagnosis, better diagnosis quality and biggest efficac
Parasite diseases  screening, with parasite disease (malaria, soil
worms) and malnutrition decrease ,  will warrant a better life
quality, and decrease mortality under five
Final result, will be a better life for Community

To healthworkers
Possibility to have earlier diagnosis, and, if need, earlier and planned
hospitalition of risk patient
Shared Diagnosis, can help to evaluate real emergences.
Possibility to have training to improve her self, and create a network
between doctor low-skill with doctor high skill
Improve relationship with patients

Visible goal: decrease of absentehism linked to  demotivation and isolation
(in bangladesh  there are the absentheis of '84 % of doctor )
Increase of exact diagnosis

What is your projected impact over the next five years?

o contribute to universal access to appropriate health care for
people in rural districts
To improve the quality of medical diagnosis and treatment provided to
people in rural districts
To eliminate the “health divide” and give to rural communities the
same health-care opportunities of urban communities.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

Actually, there are two main limitations
One is linked to weight of images that local governement permitt to be sent ( in kilobyte ) and this differs on different countries
even images are much "thin" the image quality dont' permit a good vision
and an other is related to coverage on the field
This limit obvioulsy can be delete working in collaboration with local governement, with involvement as sponsor of telecommunication netowrks

Second limitation, of global interest , is the low skill of local healthworkers, a lacking of education ,
In fact, a trasmission of images can be made, but healthworkers have to know the "basic" diagnostics......
For this, I plan a local school of appropriate technologies, of Mobilediagnosis method and Logic clinic

Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your six-month milestone

Task 1

Connect rural health-posts using m-phones with distance referent center :Development of training course

Task 2

Identification of proper site for reference center Definition of staffing (medical and non medical) and equipement of the center

Task 3

Identification of appropriate national and international partners for distance supported resolution of complex cases, and establ

Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone

Create a solidariety network local-national -international -for a global access to second opinion, and to education

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your 12-month milestone

Task 1

Selection of local -rural health centers and referent centers-School of local health workers

Task 2

Individuate referent centers and activate the second opinion with a "banking time" system of high skill specialists

Task 3

create rural local-national-global for Increase of exact diagnosis Better organization and plan of hospital admission

Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your innovation? If so, where and why?

After Uganda, Bangladesh rural, and Afghanistan, I am targeting other populations and countries:
Colombia, rural areas of pacific , Bangladesh rural areas , Afghanistan....
and a international school of Mobilediagnosis, appropriate technologies and ethic medicine in Bangkok

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

The collaboration at all level
This method, affordable, easy and not related to internet
can reach easily all target in all setting(health post, center,
etc)using microscopes and other bio-medicaloptical deviceswith acces
to m-phone network with MMS availability.
health workers, medical doctor, paramedics, midwife, community caregivers, etc
Rural community students can learn easily , and their teacher can teach easily
in addition this method dont'need long training
We expcted to create a network for quik information exchange in a few months
and in a second phase, that patients and healthworkers in rural
setting, learn to manage the health care provision, improving
themselves and become more 'aware and informed
In addition no special high skill or training is required for using

Please elaborate on any needs or offers you have mentioned above and/or suggest categories of support that aren't specified within the list

Mobilediagnosis offer training for teachers for future local teacher's training ,
course of diagnostic pathology, logic clinic and Mobilediagnosis Method, PHC
Support for second opinion from high skill national and international specialists and web platform
Economic evaluation of Mobilediagnosis-method impact on health care and on community income
Visibility and media sharing
