Health & Hope, establishing a system of community-based health care provision that is focused on local ownership and promotes sustainability.
Location
Chin State
Myanmar
The project reaches out to rural communities on the India/Burma border who currently have no health care service. It aims to establish a rural health care system managed and maintained by the communities themselves.
Community Health Workers are chosen and from within their own communities and trained for 3 months in basic health care. Each is supported by and responsible to their own Village Health Committee (VHC) which are elected by the village, promoting local ownership. Once formed, the VHC builds self-supporting local rural clinics.
Reason:
This project is creating the only community-based primary health care programme existent in the Chin state. It is a good solution for places with limited health care access, such as rural locations or politically restricted areas. Its local ownership and community participation model have created a viable organisational structure at a local, regional and state level which allows for further growth and replication of new programmes. The success of the first eighteen months of this project is very encouraging, 300 trained local community health workers have so far managed to see 31630 people, out of a total population of 57989 . The project offers a clear opportunity to reach hundreds more regions and therefore impact many more lives.
