Specific Issue: Recreation

Recreation

One member of the Changemakers community, Awista Ayub, is using recreation as a way to change societal perceptions of acceptable roles for women in Afghanistan.

From the mid-1990s, the Taliban had limited recreation opportunities for most Afghan children. When the Taliban fell in 2004, Ayub brought eight Afghan girls to the United States for a soccer clinic, opening one of the first doors for girls to play sports.

“Sports as an instrument for empowering women and girls in developing countries has engendered increased interest and support within the international development community in recent years,” says Ayub.
