Through the revolutionary labor union he founded, Kachra Vahtuk Sanghash Samiti (KVSS), or the “Waste Collectors and Transporters Union,” Ranade is challenging corruption, and championing the untouchable waste collectors who have been neglected by India's mainstream labor organizations.
These workers’ conditions changed Milind Ranade's life. One day while riding a local bus, he noticed a man who was eating while sitting on top of a passing garbage truck. Shock and fascination led Ranade and two friends to follow the truck to the Shivajinagar dumping ground.

Proyecto Lumen (Despertando la demanda de salud visual a través de la participación comunitaria)
Explain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?
The LUMEN Project assumes the deficits of quantity and quality of vision as a social problem. That’s why it considers the necessity to give access to visual health care for traditionally marginalized communities of the public policies. It considers the education as a central aspect. Being a health project, it is not a welfare approach, since it goes beyond the techno-centric to an anthropocentric perspective; it is cost-effective and has a high coverage. The innovation focus on the training of basic education’s teachers, as primary agents of visual prevention so that they can detect problems of vision among their students, and conform, coordinate and implement an inter, multidisciplinary and multi-sector social network to guarantee its viability, sustainability and permanence. In that way they also are able to obtain communitarian involvement by generating a permanent social phenomenon in primary visual attention. This network involves the academy sector, through optometry’s students working as promoters, teachers as natural leaders of its communities, the community, the specialists, during the decisive stage and the State as the principal manager and natural channeling of initiatives that lead to guarantee the preservation of the human vision. All of which it will promote the community’s organized specialized services, the blindness’ prevention and the frontal struggle against “blindness related to poverty.”

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?
The approaching solution to services of visual health problem, having as the axis articulation the sensitization and the education, aiming at the ametropia not corrected as social problem derived from the loss or null access to visual health services, constitutes an innovative conceptual valuation in Venezuela, that allows a best understanding of the situation.
How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?
To consolidate and refine the methodology by the acquisition of experience and constant revision of the project’s management indicators to obtain major effectiveness and repeatability.
To finish all the stages of the project in the strip of the Orinoco and, if it is possible, to arrive at the Delta, where lives the majority of indigenous population without access to the services.
To strengthen the alliances with other projects of public or private health service, focused on the prevention helping in the collective achievement of a more preventive and less care attendant vision. Additionally, to create the first indicators of “Visual Health” in the region to be able to measure its behavior in normal and anomaly conditions.

If we took as it bases 7000 million inhabitants, we will have for today that there are 366,1 million people with serious visual deficiencies and not corrected refracting defects in the world. 90% of them live in developing countries. Without including corrected presbyopia, the number ascends to 670 million people. According to the WHO, (Program 2020 for the blindness’ prevention) this number will be duplicated in 2020, if the suitable measures are not taken. If we consider that the tendency of demographic explosion in the PEVD is the major of the planet and that Latin America is part of this Geo-economic context, we will have a high incidence of not taken care visual morbidity causes

The planning of a solution to services of visual health problem, having as the axis articulation the sensitization and the education, aiming at the ametropia not corrected as social problem derived from the loss or null access to visual health services, constitutes an innovative conceptual valuation in Venezuela, that allows a best understanding of the situation and will surely produce a different result until now.
LUMEN developed a simple but effective methodology so that through devices of low technology and low cost, designed and validated by the technicians of the project, teacher will be able to detect visual deficits.

What are your vision and overall objectives?
That Venezuela at least assumes as state policy the visual screening applied by teachers in their role of Primary Agent of Visual Prevention, which will generate pressure on the health system, causing a sustained transformation towards primary health care.
To consolidate and refine the methodology by the acquisition of experience and constant revision of the project’s management indicators to obtain major effectiveness and repeatability, with the idea to turn it into a Health model.
To create the first indicators (non-epidemiologists) of “Visual Health” in the region to be able to measure its behavior in normal and anomaly conditions.
To generate a viral phenomenon of replication in the entire community, using the School as the epicenter.
What is your value proposition?
From the local point of view, it has a multiplying character since the individual object of the project (the school’s teacher), which in the promotional capacity and leadership role, as a APPV, will begin to create, often unconsciously, a replication phenomenon. In our experience, we have noted that teachers do not leave the kit at school, they take it to its house and screen their relatives. Those relatives understand that there is an easy way, known by teachers, to detect visual problems and tell other people awakening an expectation regarding visual subjects in the community. It encourages the primary care phenomenon in the community. It improves human and material resources and lowers the social costs.
Who is your customer(s)?
They are children of basic education between first to sixth grades, teachers’ community and the staff of scholar institutions in rural zones. Nevertheless, the project is easily adaptable to other types of social organization like “communal councils”, and other economic Geo-partners contexts.
The LUMEN’s object age group of action is from 4 to 15 years, which represents approx. 11 million inhabitants, in the national population of 29.718.357 for the year 2012. That represents the 37% of the total population of the country. Nevertheless it is necessary to consider that for the effects of the coverage this proportion must be extrapolated to 13% of the rural population focused initially by LUMEN.
What approaches to you use to reach your customers?
From the Public Health perspective, we work in the solution of a specific problem, the not corrected Ametropia sensitizing to the community regarding a particular matter of Health and stimulating it to also work in the solution. From the social point of view it address the structural components of poverty that is the low accessibility to Health services in this visual case. At the same time, it empowers the community with tools that were traditionally used by technicians and which by means of a simple methodology and easy understanding provide them with capacities that can directly reach the problem.directamente sobre la problemática.
What are your primary activities?
For stages I and II, there are workshops, one for the students of optometry and one for the teachers to be certificates as APPV. The result of this activity is the beginning of “waking up” of the demand of services of visual health, through the action of the Academy as a “starter engine”. Stage 1: teachers as “primary agents of visual prevention”. Who are your peers and competitors? What problems could these players pose to your success or growth?
The more relevant initiative undertaken by the Venezuelan State regarding Visual Health, is the so called “Mission Miracle”. This operation or mission started in 2005, as “a project to fight against blindness and other ocular deficiencies” which does not make emphasis in the not corrected refracting defect, thus are not considered a threat for the project.
What other challenges - individual, organizational, or environmental – are you currently facing or might hinder future success of your business, and how do you plan to overcome those?
The main threat for the project not managed by the government, is that at any time they can be interpreted as hostile and disturbed it activities. That situation has never impacted the Lumen Project Lumen since it has the support of the local government, especially from the logistic point of view.
Briefly describe your growth strategy going forward
To create a new team per year (conformed by 7 people) to increase the operational range of action, since at the moment we are working with a single team which can affect more than 2500 people per year. With strategic alliances with another NGOs as Fe y Alegría or Maniapure Foundation, we can increase the geographic area of the Project.

What makes your business "ready" for growth?
A developed and validated methodology. At the moment, we are in the region of the Faja of the Orinoco and the goal is that the Project has national influence, through of strategic alliances with Private enterprises and another NGOs to create a social network around the matter of Visual Health.
What are your key growth objectives?
To wake up the demand of Visual Health Services and to generate the possibility that communities construct them. To bring about the modification of the state policies regarding the matter of Visual Health, in the particular and general scope, so that it has an approach more centered in the primary health care.
What is your timeframe for growth, in the short and mid-term? What are the growth milestones and key activities going forward?
Centered in the plan of annual growth of one team per year, it esteems that the capacity of the project’s influence will be duplicated once a year and we could infer that in five years we will have a capacity to affect more than 12,500 people per year. Nevertheless, an infinite matrix of growth would not represent a practical approach due to the logistic challenges that this represents.

In its first two years, our program of visual health in rural schools has been implemented in the region of the strip of the Orinoco, specifically in the Monagas municipality of the Anzoátegui State, with the support of Total Oil and Gas Venezuela, within the framework of the agreement of “Local Human Development”. In collaboration with the mayor ship of this municipality, the project has been taken to the populations of Mapire, San Diego de Cabrutica and Zuata. Also, in alliance with the Foundation Maniapure Project, we took care of the populations of Urbana and Maniapure, Cedeño Municipality of the Bolivar State and with ASOPICA to the population of Pica, Pedro Camejo Municipality. During year 2011and what goes of 2012, we have trained and certificated 60 students of final year of optometry as LUMEN’s Facilitators, 144 teachers as Primary Agents of Visual Prevention, taken care of 2.044 children at school only in the Monagas Municipality of the Anzoátegui State. To the previous achievements it adds 65 children and adolescents in the population of the Goad, Pedro Camejo Municipality in alliance with ASOPICA and 440 in Maniapure and the Urbana, Bolivar State. Being installed 6 Round Tables of Visual Health in these places.
What methods for quantification of social impact are you applying (if at all)?
At this moment we are only quantifying raw data, such as number of screenings per year, number of trained teachers, amount of trained promoters, etc. We are also refining the method and the processes of work. At the moment, with the contest of an investigating team and one tesis expert, we work in the identification and validation of he indicators of management of the project. These results will serve us to consolidate the methodology and to guarantee its replication in other places.
Could your solution work in other geographies or regions? If so, where?
Yes, the Lumen Project is totally replicable, I would start by Latin America, for cultural and idiomatic reasons, but we have already received requests of India and Africa for the project to be implemented there.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
To create a new team per year (conformed by 7 people) it would increase the operational range, since at the moment we are working with a single team that reaches to screen more than 2500 people in one year 1, trains 144 teachers as APPV and 60 students of optometry as promoters (present capacity, 1 team) In the second year it would reach 5000 screenings, 288 teachers APPV and 120 promoters, 7500 screenings, 432 APPV and 180 promoters in year 3. With strategic alliances it is desired to increase the geographic area of the Project. With the bancomunales is also anticipated we will be able to increase demand of Lume’s intervention, economically sustained by the own community.

Explain your revenue generation strategy in more detail
Our strategy of income generation is based on a conservative scheme of alliances and funds of programs of enterprise social responsibility. By means of formal agreements with companies, local governments and Ongs, obtaining the resources for operating of the project. We also incorporate the request of donations in money, equipment, materials, uses of physical spaces and logistical support to companies of the optical branch.

In order to achieve Lumen’s goals, we need to build a large social network of support composed by universities, private enterprises, professionals, teachers, the State, students of basic school and their relatives. The idea is to generate a permanent social phenomenon towards the visual health as a social problem and to empower all the actors, at each level allowing participating them as key actors in the solution. With this, we try to generate a multidimensional social matrix that helps in the solution of a particular problem whose global impact resides in poverty overcoming.

In 1997, after having lost a beloved member of a friend group because of malpractice, his relatives distinguished there is no rules about patients' rights. "Aha!" moment was the wish to establish a reglementation of patients' rights. So relatives who have lost the patient joined with some doctors, lawyers and deontologists and discussed a possible patients' rights reglementation.

Patients' Rights Guidebook and Trainings

The patients' rights guide will aim to inform health professionals, NGOs working on health rights and health sector companies and associations and also patients.
The guide will have different categories based on special case studies. Untill now, in Turkey, all the books about patients' rights were purely or partially academic works.
However this book aims to be a guide for various target groups, and a practical orientation guidebook in which information will be vulgarized.
Also, the book will include deontological discussions that could be an important guide for medicine students.
Living a transformation of the health system in Turkey nowadays, diverse case studies and their chronological evolution would procure an enlightment of weak and strong points of this transformation.
The second step of the innovative project is to organize training programs about patients' rights for health professionals. Case studies mentioned in the guide will constitute a special part of trainings.
Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?
HAYAD is the very first association working about patients' rights created in Turkey.
Since 1997, the organization have had the chance to collect many case studies from different regions and social backgrounds in Turkey.
There is no other association or organization working in the field that have done such a collection of different cases.
We think it is now important to share the knowledge that has been accumulated by a guidebook with different social groups and by trainings with health professionals.
What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?
Unfortunately, patients' rights is not expanded within citizens in Turkey and there is a big need of awareness.
HAYAD is the first association created in Turkey working on this topic and it welcomed over 11 000 requests and recourses untill now. That to collect many cases that have been studied in depth and partially or totally resolved by specialists' help.
The organization followed also patiens' rights reglementation and played a very important role in establishing patients' rights reglementation in Turkey. However the health system in Turkey still needs a lot of civil intervention and improvement at different levels of the health sector.
Being a well known and prestigious organization, HAYAD has the chance to transmit the book to different social groups from various backgrounds.
How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?
Since the health system's transformation in Turkey is far from being accomplished yet, the organization will continue to work in this field and to collect new requests that will permit to enrich and update the guidebook.
We hope it will be possible to have funds in the future in order to publish new editions of the guidebook and to insure trainings' continuity.

Thanks to the publication of the book and the trainings that will be held, it will be possible to develop public and health professionals' awareness on patients' rights.
HAYAD who is pioneer in its field, will use all its capacity and network in order to promote the guidebook and projected trainings.

The objectives: Increasing public awareness, developing health professionals' knowledge about patients' rights, improvement of health services, empowering other NGOs working on health issues.

The publication of the guidebook will be a model for vulgarized patients' rights case studies and will contribute to diminish the lack of knowledge.
HAYAD that is a well respected organization working since 1997. A guidebook published by HAYAD will be a trustful and recognized work in this domain since until now a lot of publications made by private hospitals exist in the domain but people generally hesitate about the trustworthiness of those publications.
Trainings will also diminish lack of knowledge and have a direct impact on health professionals' behavior providing health service. A certificate that will be given by HAYAD at the end of trainings will be a proof of their attendance.

As one of the most recognized associations working on this issue, the organization has already a very large network and communication ability that will be used in order to promote the guide, as well as the trainings.
Also, the organization's website is actively visited by public (over 5000 visitors per year) and the website will be used for the promotion.
HAYAD has recently obtained a twitter account and will start promotions for the book from its Twitter account as well.

Who are your peers and competitors? What problems could these players pose to your success or growth?
There are other patient's rights organization, platforms or association in the field. Many of them connected to us before their establishment. As we see them our stakeholders, our vision was to expand these kind of initiatives and so to help them in their establishment process. It should be said that those organizations would be our peers and not competitors. If any other organization or company plans to do similar projects, they will not have such a rich and wide experience and database about the subject.
What other challenges - individual, organizational, or environmental – are you currently facing or might hinder future success of your business, and how do you plan to overcome those?
Although there are a few individual competitions in the field, NGOs working on this issue aim generally to help each other. However financial problems constitute a real challenge for us. Until now, HAYAD survived by individual donations but when it should expand and enlarge its work domain and reached public, it needs more financial resources.

Updating periodically the guidebook will provide the opportunity to ensure the growth of the project.
That will also permit to include different point of views and initiatives to the project in order to enlarge it.

Until 2013, HAYAD reached over 10000 individuals, thousands of cases, recourses and requests.
The Ministry of Health demanded HAYAD's opinion as a consultant for diverse decisions and modifications within the health system. A number of our press releases have found impact in newspapers and media. In 2002, thanks to HAYAD's lobbying and advocacy, in Turkey, the patients' rights bylaw has been created. Since the guidebook will be published in Turkish and will cover cases from Turkey analyzed according to turkish health system and justice it will not be possible to use it in other regions. However, the guidebook can be a good example and taken as a model for other countries.

Student bullying is epidemic across industrialized nations worldwide, involving approximately 30% of students. It causes its targets physical, cognitive and emotional distress, marginalizes diverse youth and leads its targets to commit suicide and school shootings. Unless schools intervene promptly and effectively, the result is student disengagement and long-term mental health challenges, which impact school performance and impede students from ever reaching their lifetime potential. Students who habitually bully tend to engage in delinquency, alcohol abuse, anti-social behaviours and crimes in to their adult lives. Unchecked, bullying creates unsafe school environments and leads to greater violence in our communities.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
I. Deliver the No Bully System to schools most at need across the United States. We will create a team of No Bully trainers available to train school districts how to implement the No Bully System starting in the Western US States.
II. Create strategic partnerships to deliver the No Bully System at low or zero cost to schools. In order to scale our program rapidly, No Bully will secure corporate sponsorships and foundation funding for No Bully trainers to work with schools at low or zero cost.
III. Establish the No Bully System as the best practice in how to respond to student bullying. In the age of evidence-based programs, we will demonstrate the success of the No Bully System through gathering and publishing quantitative evidence of its effectiveness.

No Bully is poised for growth. Six months ago we had just one employee - the ED - and operated our trainings through independent contractors. Now we have three employees, having brought on a development director and trainer. Our goal over the next twelve months is to increase our staff to eight.
In order to create a high level and effective team, our project need is to create a detailed staffing plan that defines how we will advertise, recruit, interview and create job descriptions for new and existing hires.
If the coaching process can extend to two needs/goals, we would highly value American Express guidance on performance management as we move from a virtual office to a physical office in San Francisco.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Over the past thee years we have trained educators at nearly two hundred California schools in the No Bully System and so helped support bully-free campuses for an estimated 60,000 students. Two independent studies have shown that educators trained by us are solving incidents of student bullying in at least 80% of cases, and this held true three months later, making No Bully one of the most effective strategies available for ending student bullying.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
Support from American Express will enable us to scale up our impact to reach more schools. Our goal is to partner in depth with a hundred schools over the next school year and train them how to implement and sustain the No Bully System long-term. Our three year goal is to expand our work from California to the East Coast, hire more trainers and increase our impact to two hundred schools a year. The project impact is preventing the lives lost or forever changed by student peer bullying.

PACE Society Outreach Project (POP) aims to reduce violence experienced by street-level sex workers and engage sex workers by providing housing, job, employment, health and crisis support. Survival sex workers are the most visible and vulnerable of all sex workers. They experience the highest number of assaults and sexual assaults of any population group perpetrated by partners, patrons, pimps, dealers, other sex workers, and members of the public. Violence against survival sex workers in Vancouver continues to be a problem. Stigma and criminalization prevent accurate reporting of the number of survival sex workers that encounter violence. PACE Society supports and engages over 100 members, all of whom self-identify as survival sex workers, by using peer-to-peer education and support
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
A self-initiated PACE Strategic Planning session in July of 2012 identified the following as top priorities for PACE Society in the coming year:
1. Branding: scope and identity (see below)

With the Supreme court appeal of the Bedford decision this June 2013, strengthening and developing organizations like PACE Society is more timely than ever and will ensure that sex workers continue to receive the support services they require.

Branding refers to the concept of a clear identity linked to what PACE does. For example, when people think of sex worker support agencies, is PACE and our logo foremost in people’s minds? Does the PACE tagline on the website accurately reflect who we are and what we do?
Two possible pathways of support services include:
1. Should PACE diversify to serve a larger community and should our definition of sex work not be limited to survival sex work (no mention of survival in our mission statement)? With the closing of PEERS Vancouver, many sex workers wishing to exit have fewer options than ever. Where will they go for resume/cover letters etc.?
2. Should PACE remain targeted to survival sex workers? In wanting to be able to help any sex worker that comes in the door/calls the organization do we run the risk of scope creep and staff burnout?Also, how does PACE maintain connections with survival sex workers who don’t currently access our services?
Lastly, It is important to understand valid versus questionable research as it relates to our population. Misinformation exists in our community; do we have a responsibility to dispel myths by offering relevant, factual research?

Support through American Express' Serve2Gether Consulting service will be used to develop a creative and sustainable solution to the issue of branding for the overall organization with a specific focus on support services. Support services is an umbrella portfolio that encompasses violence prevention workshops both for sex workers and for community groups including the Vancouver Police Department, safety coach training and mentoring, resume, skills training and job finding resources, and the PACE Outreach Project (POP) which engages sex workers in the environments where they are working.

PACE contracted an external consultant to facilitate a Strategic Planning meeting in 2012. An Environmental Scanning process labeled PEST (Political, Economic, Social, Technological) and a management tool called SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) were used to analyze and brainstorm areas of interest and concentration. In addition, PACE Society requires staff and support workers to submit monthly reports on support services, violence prevention and outreach as well as an annual report for each position. However, no solid plan has been laid out or acted upon.

- Provision of in-house safety workshops to over 360 participants with 75% of participants reporting a feeling of new confidence in their safety plans and self defense skills. (Report available upon request)
- Development and upkeep of website, facebook page and twitter account to establish a social media presence. Currently, board members and staff sit on and are connected to over 15 community based initiatives including UBC and CDI College, Vancouver Police Department recruits, BC Coalition of People with Disabilities, and LAPP (Local Area Planning Process).
- community engagement: through hosting speakers such as Dr. Gabor Mate which resulted in the engagement of over 100 community members on addictions and sex work.

What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
Professional support from American Express will allow PACE Society to balance growth with cost by defining a scope of engagement (ie a clear branding strategy). This will be measured by greater depth of understanding concerning the environment PACE is operating within, as well as a clear assessment of future service needs and delivery. Success will include diversification of funding sources based on need as well as the development of long term solutions to physical space ("No space, no PACE). It may also address the potential for satellite (franchise) centres outside of the downtown eastside (in Victoria, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, etc). Ultimately, PACE Society support services aims to provide uncompromising support to it's members and relevant, valid information to it's community partners.

Student to Student is dedicated to addressing the achievement gap by providing low-income NYC students high quality SHSAT test preparation. The sad reality is that high-income students are a step ahead of their lower income peers because they have access to important and expensive resources outside of the classroom. Student to Student will allow motivated and talented NYU students to mentor and tutor NYC middle school students, thereby giving NYU students an invaluable opportunity to gain real-world experience and engage with their community.

Anyone who has lived with symptoms of schizophrenia for a considerable length of time will recognize the perspectives given here: the diagnosable symptoms of sz may be incurably lodged within us and May be a part of our make-up, but that does not in itself present a grim predicament. This is because our disabilities are also our Attributes. Maybe unwittingly, the psychiatrist's diagnosis undermines these attributes and sets them in a grim light. We do not languish in despair but set about engaging the symptoms as evidence of rare qualities to be expressed and applied creatively. My 'pathway to progress' has been photography. Seeing things which 'are not there' enables me to develop an awareness of the imaging possibilities of any scene I see and record it.

The social integration of socially excluded elements who seek restitution and meaningful activity, to develop skills and expertise that help to re-engage them creatively and more effectively. So much of the resources devoted to mental health is wasted in non-productive, badly targeted measures more to do with security-obsessions than welfare improvement, when effective measures Stick and do not need the repetitious cycles of a revolving door.

With the right help, a low maintenance dosage of appropriate medication to reduce the intensity of symptom's extremes -one which does not pile on a burden of disability which excessive medicating is apt to do- and some vocational and training guidance, we can be the creative artists that nature intended us to be, using our gifts to master the medium which is best suited to our attributes.

It works for the individuals who put forward their creative ideas as part of the solution to some intractable problems regarding engaging incurable people so we are meaningfully occupied and on a road to true integration, in consultation and partnership and in Open dialogue to resolve remaining health issues conclusively.

That is photography and visual hallucinations. What then of reconstructing the Dramatist and Playwright, the writer and novelist from auditory hallucinations? Musicians, composers, singers and lyric writers are also only a step away from the same level of creative attribute and giftedness.

Healthcare trusts frequently engage former patients in voluntary involvement activities. Tthis has a detrimental effect of preferment for a sector of patients according to their aptitudes and willingness to give back to a system which in turn selectively prioritises favourite patients on a fast track and shuts out less trendy or intractable conditions like schizophrenia. Such preferment is subversive of equal treatment and opportunity and entangles professionals in increasingly corrupt practices.

My medication was severely disabling for many years. I lost faculties which many take for granted and they were only restored to me gradually as dosages were reduced and the guard lowered in the hostilities between clinician and patient. I realized during this process that the elements of symptoms which the clinician was trying to eradicate were my Strengths as an artist! Small wonder that the level of medicating is critical in not rendering patients more disadvantaged than we need to be. And of course this has a strong bearing upon our capacity to recover or make progress.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
More Open dialogue and a greater understanding and acceptance of the essential humanity of people whose repellent qualities are mostly born out of over-medicating and a receptiveness to peer-working and consultation respecting people with lived experiences of conditions and the light we shed upon dark areas of understanding.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
Capacity-building will enable us to encompass and develop more influence respecting our approach to the integrity of personal experiences.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
A lack of resources is pegging us back currently. Nothing succeeds like success however, and we need to build upon our growing momentum to influence more people with Open dialogue

The development of working practices tried and tested in West Finland which are delivering markedly better results to any comparable region throughout the world, whose principles of Open dialogue are spreading contagiously and high-lighting why other approaches fail, through revolving-door wastage and inappropriate antagonisms between patients and staff with excessive emphasis upon security and risk issues which result from this antagonism
What internal support have you gotten for your project? What kind of push-back have you received?
It is early days but interest in holding pilots which test the success of new approaches are getting a good reception thus far. This needs to be matched by funding of more projects to make the case irrefutable.

In Human and Environmental rights a sustainable awareness and consciousness have to be brought in the minds of the indigenes and non-indigenes in Rivers State and in the government of Rivers State to respect HUMAN DIGNITY, by empowering the government with REVIEWS of the government’s policies and suggestions on how to better humanity, and always investigating on the areas that require the government's attention especially as they relate to infrastructural decays and flooding in the communities.

It is innovative because as far as campaigning for human and environmental rights in Nigeria and around the globe are concerned, it will bring about the kind of awareness and perception that the non-indigenes and the public domain desire in line with their choice of aspiration. It will build a capacity to win and keep a well-respected and very influential spectrum of special publics working in consonance with the drive.

The solution makes a difference because Odimegwu Onwumere with his journalism initiative has effected change in the government policies. Migrants are being appointed in the government of Rivers State by the indigenous politicians. There is free education and health care policy on the passage of the bill "Social Contributory Levy" by the State House of Assembly. Albeit, the bill would require parents to pay a certain amount of money to complement what the state government would provide to enable the students that would gain admission into the new model secondary schools enjoy free uniforms, sandals, books and feeding, as against what students used to pay. If the schools charge fees, many poor parents cannot afford to send their wards to the school. There is pressure on the Assembly to consider the importance of the bill to the common citizens and pass it into law. Odimegwu Onwumere is not relenting in seeing that life is bettered for the people living in the urban and rural towns.

The competitors are politicians and their agents, but Odimegwu Onwumere is different from them because he generates and manages profound streams of information about him and his ambition across the world, with special focus on Rivers State. Odimegwu Onwumere started this initiative in his neighbourhood in 1996, sharing fliers and bills to people. This metamorphosed to writing. It began to expand with his formation of Poet Against Child Abuse (PACA), a non-profit organization that provides a portal for all people but most especially young people to find inspiration, express their rights, access information and get involved in improving their local and global communities on the fight against Child Abuse. His quest for human and environmental rights did not exclusively exist in major form. He used "all the means necessary" to pass his information, excluding violence. It was when he took the crusade to the media that it became internationally.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Today, his programme that was a toddler, Onwumere is inundated with calls and emails from the media, environment and human rights organisations around the world seeking his comment on an issue or the other.
What is your projected impact over the next 1 to 3 years?
His current expansion is to establish a publishing firm that would focus on publishing unpublished writers, using the proceeds to influence the lives of those in the towns and villages he has not slept for their betterment. This firm can only be achieved if he receives funds to the tone of $1million (USA Dollars) from the general public. Odimegwu Onwumere needs financial assistance.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Funding might hinder this project, but his target of expansion is to bring equality to human habitats all over the world, wondering why few people live in affluence to the detriment of the majority that live in slums and in abject poverty. And he will surmount the challenges by effectively managing himself as a Brand. This is professional media communications that focuses on deepening his popularity by developing and running special platforms that registered him strongly in the public consciousness in a manner that secures their emotions, sentiments and sense of leadership choice of him.

Upon receiving life threatening calls several times from politicians, Odimegwu Onwumere has continued to create awareness about the benefit and value of Human and Environmental rights in Nigeria, and at large, the Niger Delta region, which is characterised by militant pressure groups and kidnapping activities in the recent time.
How are you leveraging internal resources (funds, time, knowledge, etc.) to support this initiative?
Odimegwu Onwumere does a lot of research. As a result, people consult him on any special issues as they relate to the government policies, and he helps in seeing that the rights of the people are not hampered by the issue bordering to his consultation – media – when faced with attack of those who may not like to hear about the society’s outcry and their perception. He does all these benevolently. But the good spirited individuals appreciate what he does by willingly donating to him.
Expand on your answer, explaining the long-term funding and support plan.
Though, he finances the project to the tone of $20, 000 (USA Dollars) annually. The implementation of this plan requires access to all aspects of the media platforms, and not limited to a particular one. He does this because an enlarged audience makes a core identity to effective brand recognition of the subject of concern across over all media, blog, brand, sale sites, when he circulates his briefs about the menace against the society and the people from any quarter, without restriction.

He has successfully been creating maximum impact through media strategies. In his crusade, he nip sudden issue related to the entire process if the problem was not nipped into the bud immediately – like flooding and public rights. Premised on the belief that hatred and bias in the forms of racism, sexism, homophobia and classism are taught or learned from key influences, such as one’s family and immediate social environment, religious affiliations and visual media, The UNLEARNing Project™ will create an innovative and comprehensive approach to these crucial social justice issues through education, digital coalition-building and advocacy that facilitates the unlearning process of indoctrinated prejudice.

The UNLEARNing Project™ is a hybrid venture that unites social justice and social media to implement pioneering social justice strategies centered on unlearning the global oppressions of racism, sexism, homophobia and classism. Utilizing social media’s attributes of educational and collaborative exchange, stimulating visual imagery and extensive community-building techniques, the objective of transforming individual and group learned biases is central to this venture. This original computer program will consist of an advanced interactive social justice educational website where site users can interact with millions of people and contribute to this social change movement using diverse digital media.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
The UNLEARNing Project's™ intense marketing campaign is designed to attract users across the world who regularly use and engage with various social media tools in their daily lives. This will be achieved through: a) a strong presence on diverse social media outlets, b) advertisements in local newspapers and radio stations, c) presenting the project on local public access television stations, d) attending key local and nationwide events, e) networking with colleges and universities, f) publication materials, like postcards, flyers, business cards, pamphlets, etc., g) sponsorship and partnership with relevant political representatives and h) “link swapping” with other key local, national and international organizations, (i.e. LGBT, women’s rights and anti-racist organizations.)
To measure the effectiveness and success of this social justice interactive media tool, an experienced research and development team will extract data using a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative data gathering methods to assess the following: The quantitative data analysis will extract: a) the total number of visits or hits to the site daily, b) the size and number of followers through Facebook, Twitter, and other social media pages; the number of site users/followers that “like” the project’s Facebook page will also be highlighted, c) the frequency of interaction between site visitors, while the qualitative data analysis will measure the resulting “action” that follows (i.e. participation in social action groups, launching a community or advocacy.)

During the fall of 2010 until the winter of 2011, I developed a social justice blog with the mission of highlighting underlying or more seemingly innocuous issues of racism, sexism, homophobia and classism in our world. With the successful publication of several articles in online magazines and newspapers nationally and internationally, a former co-worker encouraged me to search for funding to extend my work. It was at that moment The UNLEARNing Project™ was born into my mind.
With the evolution of communications, education administration and the development of social justice campaigns, I began contemplating on the various reasons why social media would be a highly effective tool used to unlearn many forms of indoctrinated bias and hatred. Because social media: a) connects millions of people to each other and to information rapidly, b) stimulates and enhances the learning experience through visual imagery, and c) supports/develops community-building, this venture became the answer.

In 2010, the BC government launched a program to “seek & treat” undiagnosed people living with HIV and expand HIV treatment. HIV has changed in BC. HIV+ people are living longer healthier lives, enjoying relationship and having families. However, the way the general public thinks about and the messages surrounding HIV continue to foster stigma. The UN stated, "Stigma remains the single most important barrier to public action...making AIDS the silent killer, because people fear the social disgrace of speaking about it, or taking available precautions." The average Canadian does not know what being HIV+ really means today, people are not getting the message. HIV related stigma & discrimination include being shunned by family, and peers, poor health care treatment, and psychosocial damage.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
We will train up to 24 people living with HIV (Ambassadors) to become a new generation of HIV+ leaders; with them producing a larger media campaign, Does HIV Look Like Me? (DHLLM) Canada and begin a network of national projects. The campaign will educate the general public about HIV/AIDS and reduce the stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS. Leadership training to HIV+ individuals from communities across Canada provides the tools to articulate their experiences & become a point of connection to HIV within their communities. Our HIV+ candidates will receive assistance, seed funding, & mentorship to start an anti stigma project in their communities. Via their efforts and our campaign, we aim to encourage people to get tested, protect themselves, and reduce stigma in their communities. The campaign will show people living with HIV/AIDS that they are not alone, provide them with the tools, skills and networks to take charge of their lives and redefine living w/HIV.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Experience teaches us that a strong movement of people living with HIV or AIDS that affords mutual support and a voice at local and national levels is particularly effective in tackling stigma. (UNAIDS) The idea of involving people living with HIV was formally adopted as a principle at the Paris AIDS Summit in 1994, where 42 countries declared the Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV and AIDS to be critical to ethical and effective national responses to the epidemic. The workshops in this training will help young leaders establish their roles as leaders and provide them with the tools needed to be effective leaders, within their school, community or the larger HIV, AIDS movement. We acknowledge that Positive Leaders experiences and perspectives are key to addressing the needs of our communities and are valuable tools to challenge public misconceptions about living with HIV today.
Our 7 day training, project and campaign will give the ambassadors the tools and support needed to affect how they see themselves, and the media campaign will affect how the country sees them—ultimately reducing stigma and helping to change the course of the HIV epidemic in Canada.

In 2011 Vancouver Coastal Health designed a campaign, ‘It’s Different Now’, to de-stigmatize & normalize HIV testing in BC. The campaign, produced by an advertising company, lacked the voices of people who are living with HIV & experiencing the effects of stigma firsthand. Our approach & delivery of the HIV message is what makes us unique. Our campaigns are written & produced in-house, with the involvement of HIV + people, creating a personal feel while still looking like campaigns created by advertising agencies. Our ambassadors tell their stories, providing the viewer with an honest and relatable perspective. We also provide unique opportunities for HIV+ people to be empowered through training & personal mentorship, so they can be the change they seek in their lives.

Brandy Svendson was working as the International Campaign Director for the Does HIV Look Like Me? (DHLLM) campaigns. She met and received emails from 100’s of HIV + people from all over the world that were inspired and wanted to be involved. These individuals were seeking both a platform and a community, where they too could help create change and inspire people around the world. Having recognized the opportunity within the success and impact of those campaigns—she envisioned a long term organization dedicated to showing the human face of HIV, and programs and projects that developed the next generation of HIV + leaders. In 2009, Brandy started Does HIV Look Like Me? International Society. To date, they have created media campaigns & leadership trainings that have taken place in several countries. The organization also implemented the first HIV Screening in Dental Clinics Program in Vancouver, soon to be duplicated across Canada.
Please describe the goal of your initiative; outline what you are trying to achieve
The overarching goal of our initiative is to change the way the average Canadian views and talks about HIV today. The epidemic and treatment have changed so dramatically in the last 6 years and the messaging and the conversation must keep up. 1:4 Canadians who are HIV + do not know they are (PHAC). We need to capture attention by creating relatable and real content. "There is still much work to be done to undo the blame and shame directed at People Living With HIV everyday," says Dirceu Campos, DHLLMI Board & long-time HIV+ activist. “Our campaigns and projects give us an opportunity to reach out to our communities and supporters around the world to create a cutting edge media and projects, that will help us foster new leaders in the HIV movement and change how Canadians think about HIV.”
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
This project is in the startup phase, we conceptualized the project late last year, and in Dec., 2011, we launched our latest video to kick of support for the Does HIV Look Like Me? Canada campaign and project, called “Stop the Stigma”. It featured 6 Canadians from Vancouver, speaking to how HIV today has changed, and how stigma affects their lives. The video reached over 6000 viewers to date on Youtube, and we have provided several copied to community partners, and have been contacted by organization and people living with HIV to be involved in the larger campaign. Most importantly, this video has had impact on the brave individuals involved in the video, Valerie wrote “I choose to do this video as it needed to be said and it has brought much healing for myself. The message is getting out there that no matter what AGE GENDER or LIFE you lead this could happen to you, it really has made people think! I have always said that I am POSITIVE PROUD & PASSIONATE, and now I truly believe it.”
What is your projected impact over the next five years?
• Educate general public about HIV/AIDS and reduce stigma & discrimination against
people living with HIV/AIDS and enable people to make healthier choices for themselves and improve their quality of life.
- Help shape the next generation of leaders, who will be prominent in the movement
• Provide tools, skills, and networks to take charge of their lives and redefine what living with
HIV is like today
• Provision of additional training and support for up to 24 Ambassadors to be active in their
communities, schools and in the media to advocate for their rights, challenge stigma and
discrimination, change policies, encourage and support testing and access to treatment.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The two largest barriers that would hinder the success of our project are securing the funding and identifying a suitable media sponsor. Our plan to secure funding is to identify and applying for the applicable grants available to our organization. We also hope to find corporate and/or private sponsors for the campaign. To maximize the impact of a Canada wide campaign, we need the support of mainstream media. For media sponsorship we plan to meet with different media outlets with our ambassadors and a proposal package detailing the project, our media needs and the impact the partnership will make on the campaign overall. We hope a formal meeting with our ambassadors will demonstrate the need for a project and campaign, as well as the impact it will have on Canadians and our communities.

The campaign is planned and coordinated in partnership with the Campaign Coordinating Committee (CCC), this includes campaign supporters, partners, sponsors, influential individuals, stakeholders, press, CCC and DHLLMI staff and board. Some examples, including, local AID Serving Organizations from each province, including but not limited to AIDS Vancouver, AIDS Calgary, etc. We will also invite local and national health authorities such as Vancouver Coastal Health, Public Health Agency of Canada, any funders, and of course will always include people living with HIV in all areas and aspects.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
The general public views HIV as something that happens to ‘other’ groups of people. This line of thinking can be very dangerous as it leaves people vulnerable to contracting the disease. It is our hope to create a larger campaign that targets ALL Canadians with more personal stories and people describing the realities of HIV as it exists today. This is why the recruitment of the ambassadors is to include and strong cross section that represents Canada’s great diversity, i.e race, age, gender and culture. We want people to know it can happen to anyone.
What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?
DHLLM campaigns are planned, executed & distributed in partnership with the Campaign Coordinating Committee (CCC) & BoD. The CCC consists of representatives from sectors including local government, stakeholders, NGOs & service providers, public health officials, HIV+ people & media.
The campaign is co-coordinated by a Campaign Coordinator. This person works with DHLLMI staff during the planning, production and implementation of the campaign and serves as an important liaison between DHLLMI, the CCC and Ambassadors involved in the campaign.
This organizational structure ensures meaningful participation of partners, stakeholders and the Ambassadors every step of the way.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
The process of transition in Uganda has presented challenges, opportunities and new roles for the women of Bukedea. It has also exposed development-related pressures and problems that previously were not so acute or did not exist. The degree of satisfaction with existing opportunities for personal and professional development directly influences the behaviour and expectations of women. In turn, their potential to reach an acceptable quality of life materially, healthily and behaviourally is greatly diminished. Situation analyses of the women sector reveal many challenges young people are facing, including:
Poverty at a rate of 44.7 %, unemployment level among women is 13.4%, Access to education the perception of 88% of women in rural areas, ICT access and skills at 79.9%
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The project objective is to support women social inclusion and civic engagement by developing key social competencies necessary for pro-active women involvement in society and decision-making processes, thus providing support to further enhancement of Government women policy. This will be achieved through: capacity development of Women Centres, women volunteers, and local volunteer-involving organizations/schools; development of competencies of young women and men for active involvement in society and local level decision-making; development of social competencies of young women and men through e-learning, on-line learning, and knowledge hub resources; fostering inter-generational equity and social solidarity via creation of a living heritage treasury; popularization of volunteerism among both young women and men, and its further development; Introduction of volunteerism to community stakeholders as a support mechanism for achieving local government, public and private sector goals.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Developing women social competencies and promoting women participation in the development and implementation of socially important projects will be achieved by introducing state-of-the-art communication technologies to women networks. New learning materials, on-line trainings and face-to-face trainings will be developed and made available through the Learning and Knowledge Transfer Hub to be established under the joint project.
Social competencies will be formed through the following instruments and project activities:
Capacity development of women in secondary schools, including volunteers and other target groups, though face-to-face and on-line trainings and web-design, etc.;
Networking and peer-to-peer networking between project target groups and other players;
Practical experience for students from pedagogical schools by volunteering in project activities in rural schools and women centers;
Support to creating e-communities and developing web-community social services and projects involving project target groups;
Support to women to develop skills for solving community problems, including proactive approaches and citizenship skills;
Training of teachers in the organization and career orientation curricula for secondary schools;
Introduce volunteerism in the local development agenda;
Utilize information,learning,training materials on the Project Portal Learning and Knowledge Transfer Hub for further development of women

The Centre to flourish, effectively discharge its mandate, it is imperative that it embraces ICT in all its operations. The Centre is in the process of formulating an appropriate information management system to monitor and evaluate the women's social needs and an efficient way of disseminating information to all actors in this field. This technology will make the centre a fully fledged resource outfit that will enhance and meet its objectives unlike earlier similar ones that failed. ICT has relevance to the day-to-day livelihood of women. Community ignorance, political issue can affect the growth and more probably partners in the field of women

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
To build on this work, experience, successes and lessons learned, the project will target women. The Project will operate with women groups of Bukedea District.
Accordingly, the project will ensure that both female within all target groups will benefit from all the rights, resources and opportunities provided under the project. A particular emphasis will be placed on working with marginalized, socially-excluded women who, due to geographic, economic, gender, and/or cultural barriers, are disadvantaged in Bukedea schools today.
All communities united around Bukedea for this Women project; Women groups where Human Security for Ugandan women established initial networks; ICT trainings for particular target audiences 15-26 years old to counter dynamics that can discourage and/or inhibit participation of some beneficiaries; Targeting females for ICT to improve equality of technical skills; Promoting tolerance and understanding between the genders in trainings and project activities.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
In the next 1- 3 years the Project period, the following shall have been accomplished:
The primary users and end-users (girls at school, local women leaders, women out of school) shall have efficiently received and exchange information, as well as be provided opportunity for connectivity to knowledge networks.
A network of support and services institutionalized through assistance from organizations (UN-Habitant, agencies, knowledge resource institutions) to provide with program inputs, materials and information to enable functionality.
System documented thereby facilitating the scaling up to other sites/communities. Availability of knowledge in localized, simplified and cost-effective form; accessibility to knowledge; empowerment, cooperation and growth based on the MDGs achieved
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Formation of new central government and shifts in regional government
Need to re-establish working relations with partners on central and regional levels
Signing MOUs with partners stipulating responsibilities and ensuring succession of activity

In many countries of the world, it had been shown that government and industry have made considerable contribution to their national development goals through judicious application ICT. Great strides in technological innovations have made it possible for rural-urban communities to have access to the digital world at affordable costs. These technologies are also recognized as important tools in achieving the MDGs and in supporting the goals of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) as expressed in Geneva (2003) and Tunis (2005). As enunciated by the WSIS Declaration of Principles, the building of an inclusive Information Society shall be pursued through partnerships and cooperation among governments and other stakeholders, i.e., the private sector, civil society and international organizations (A-17).

The Vancouver hockey riots of June 2011 left an indelible mark on the City of Vancouver. Many participants (over 200 cases) were young people with no previous criminal record. Their actions left many others - young people working for downtown businesses and citizens from all walks of life (hundreds of people)- traumatized; their material and psychological interests severely affected. The limits of the court system in dealing with these cases have been recognized by Crown prosecutors, the Vancouver Police Department and representatives of the Downtown Business Improvement Association; all of whom have been working with the Vancouver Association for Restorative Justice (VARJ) in developing an alternative/parallel process for dealing with those accused and those affected.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The Vancouver Association for Restorative Justice (VARJ), with community support, is proposing to use Restorative Justice(RJ) processes to address the behaviour of offenders and the needs victims. RJ does not necessarily replace the criminal justice system. It aims to restore the offender to the community by bringing the offender and those affected together in a process designed to put the offender in touch with his or her behaviour, its genesis and consequences and the impact on others. It works toward restitution, growth and change. RJ is a well-established, thoroughly researched and effective approach to dealing with the kind of offenses committed during the Vancouver hockey riots. Many citizens of Vancouver, based on letters to the editor, etc., are disillusioned with the ability of the justice system to effectively deal with these cases. We propose to pilot an alternative RJ process, with the support of a wide range of community interests.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Peter broke into London Drugs. Fueled by alcohol and urged on by other young people, he smashed glass cases and stole digital cameras while youthful employees, barricaded inside a glass-walled office, watched in horror as their workplace was trashed. They feared for their own safety. Peter, 19, had never done anything like this before.
Restorative justice processes require the voluntary participation of the offender and those affected. (1) Practitioners meet separately with both parties to prepare them for a face-to-face conference in which both parties will explain what they did and how they were affected. This process usually requires a number of sessions. (2) Participants are prepared to explain what they did; offering insight into their behaviour in terms of preexisting attitudes, values, sensibilities, socialization, lived experience, etc. Victims are helped to express their feelings; the impact that someone's actions had upon them and how their lives were affected. Both parties are helped to think about meaningful reparations and resolutions. (3) The parties, with 'supporting Others' are brought together in a conference to communicate in a manner designed to facilitate understanding, leading to restitution, apologies and ongoing commitments to address factors contributing to the offense. (4) The offender makes restitution and commits him or herself to addressing his or her behaviour. Restitution can involve payments, community service, speaking publicly to other youth, adults, etc. Restitution can involve actions and commitments that last for years.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are no competitors in this process. We have, however, many peers including others in neighbouring municipalities who, unlike the City of Vancouver, have established successful RJ programmes. We have the support of the Office of the Attorney General, BC, The Ministry of Justice, the City of Vancouver, the Downtown Business Improvement Association, the Vancouver Police Department, the Crown Prosecutor's Office, The Center for Restorative Justice, Simon Fraser University and the School of Social Work, UBC, and many Vancouver residents. Furthermore, we ultimately intend to extend this initiative to deal with other social problems in the city including bullying in the school system and disputes brought to the attention of staff of the city's neighbourhood houses and community centers.

Unlike surrounding jurisdictions, Vancouver has no active restorative justice program. In 2006, the City of Vancouver's Family Court/Youth Justice Committee realized this and set out to do something about it. The Vancouver Association for Restorative Justice was created to promote knowledge about and the practice of restorative justice in Vancouver. Having held informative and interesting information meetings and public events for years, committee members recognized that the hockey riots of 2011 presented VARJ with an opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of restorative justice in a way and with regard to an event that has attracted national attention. We have an opportunity to catch the minds and imagination of people willing to think critically and creatively about justice and justice issues, coast to coast by focusing on its use in dealing with the riots as well as other important issues for the citizens of Vancouver and Canadians, coast to coast.
Please describe the goal of your initiative; outline what you are trying to achieve
The goal of our Restorative Justice Demonstration project is to show how the principles and practices of restorative justice can be applied in Vancouver as a parallel process to meet needs of victims, offenders and affected communities that the criminal justice system was never designed to address. We are currently designing an RJ project in consultation with Crown Counsel and Police that will accept a fixed number of referred cases where both the victims and (first-time) offenders have voluntarily welcomed the opportunity to participate. The process will be documented and evaluated by a team from Simon Fraser University's Centre for RJ which will include a cost-benefit analysis in comparison to the cost of a full criminal process; and recommendations for continuing if warranted.
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
After a full year of volunteer effort to attract interest in our goals, we have been able to engage a core group of key decision-makers within the justice system to form an advisory committee to refine our design proposal and work on implementation details
What is your projected impact over the next five years?
Over the next five years we expect to provide sufficient evidence that an RJ process can be implemented in Vancouver; expect to have implemented an ongoing RJ program with stable funding; expanded the educational component of RJ to cover other contexts where the need for such approaches has been identified including human rights enforcement and anti-bullying programs. On local and national scale we will enhance public understanding of and respect for the scope and limitations of the formal, adversarial systems (e.g. criminal; family; administrative tribunals) for addressing alleged transgressions. In Vancouver, we expect some measurable cost reductions from the diversion of first offenders. Victims will be heard and Vancouver will establish itself as a role model for the practice of RJ.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
With the currently strong support now emerging from the key authorities with the discretion to make referrals to an RJ process; and their active engagement with us in designing the details of our demonstration project, the only major barrier is start-up funding. We are currently in the process of estimating the cost per case and the number of cases which we will want to include in the project.

We have strong partnerships to make this project work. They include
Crown Counsel for BC, the office of the Vancouver police in charge of the investigation team preparing information for Crown Counsel, a senior representative of the BC Ministry of Justice,the Director of Simon Fraser University's Centre for Restorative Justice, the Dean of the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Vancouver, the Executive Director of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association and the UBC School of Social Work, as well as representatives from many other organizations in the city.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
There is considerable talk about RJ in British Columbia, Canada and internationally. RJ is currently being practiced in some jurisdications. It deserves more attention. We recently hosted a former advisor to the British Government who is using RJ to deal with recent London riots. We intend to model RJ in Vancouver and actively use our experience to promote, in the next 3 years, RJ throughout BC and across the country. Our group includes individuals with solid reputations as lecturers, speakers and facilitators. We know how to use media, lobby and promote a concept whose time has come.
What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?
We get along - simply put. Our board and associates are a congenial, energetic, diverse and enthusiastic group. We have a president, vice-president, administrator, treasurer and committee chairs. We work well together. We have a wide range of experience and expertise. We respect one another. Our group dynamics are excellent. We socialize together and support and attend other and related events in which each of us are involved. We create committees to deal with oppotunities, needs as they arise, and to accomplish our objectives. We have an excellent administrator who keeps all our records; minutes, legal documents, papers and articles relevant to our work. We are effective because we are energized. We practice - as well as promote - the principles of restorative justice.

We are open to collaborating with and accepting into VARJ others whose skills may compliment or duplicate those we already have. We are willing to share our experience and expertise with others. We are an organization of professionals as well as lay persons with a wealth of experience. Our greatest need is funding to put into practice a model for RJ in the city of Vancouver - and beyond.

The project aims to support youth inclusion in Bukedea District in Eastern Uganda and to foster democratic reforms and youth civic engagement. The project will build the capacities of youth centers, youth community organizations as well as schools. Via an inclusive approach, young women and men will gain competencies necessary for their pro-active involvement in social and decision-making processes. Volunteerism will be promoted and practiced as a tool for achieving local development goals, particularly those identified by youth.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Legal education for youth and the laws of Canada and the law reform process is extremely important. But we need to also be teaching our youth about the role that international law is increasingly playing in our global world. We have no real mechanisms for global governance. The youth of today are going to be the leaders and participants and global citizens of tomorrow who will make those decisions, hopefully not just carrying out the ones that we make today. This project is designed for interactive learning of youth about aspects of international law and governance that will impact on their future. We propose curricula and social media focused on international legal education for youth.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The objectives are simple: Research and develop educational material in youth friendly formats (print and web based with links to YouTube, Facebook and Podcasts) that will educate them about issues of international law and the rule of law and our obligations as Canadian citizens in a global world to implement international law at home and abroad.
By the end of this project we will have:
- A completed study guide integrated into BC high schools
- Have held focus groups with our advisory committee and high school youth
- Incorporated the recommendations from above committees into the final product
• A completed website
• A study guide adaptable to high schools that will be branded as a BC product – International Women's Right's Project; Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria; The BC Teacher’s Federation; West Coast Leaf; and The BC Law Foundation.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
All the support required comes from the partners involved in the project. With the membership base of the BC Teacher's Federation, there is a guarantee that once the content is approved by the BC Teacher's Federation executive, having been vetted by the focus groups, the material will be used in BC schools. Making sure that the materials are also web based will meet a greater national need since these educational resources are not available. Engaging youth in the preparation of the materials as well as the mode of presentation, with a focus on local BC and Canadian case studies, will ensure greater buy-in from the constituency.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
As far as we can ascertain, no one else is doing this educational work in BC high schools. There are some websites like Wikipedia that might provide some basic international legal information, but nothing that has been specifically written for the curricula and lesson plans for BC high schools. The Justice Education Society of BC does international work, but not international legal education in high schools. The Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN), in part funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario, does legal education but not international legal education, and not in BC.

The IWRP produced a documentary film, "Constitute", on how Canadian women organized to ensure that Canada's Constitution and Charter of Rights included equality. This was the largest mobilization of Canadian women in history. We found that not only did high school students know nothing about how they came to have "equality" in their life time, they knew nothing about international law - from the story of Canadian child soldier Omar Khadr at Guantanemo to how Aboriginal women had to go to the UN to gain their rights in Canada to issues of Arctic sovereignty, what international human rights law and international law was and is - was completely absent from their learning experiences. We decided to fix this!

We want this project to be integrated in learning institutions in BC in both high schools and universities, so that our youth of today will learn about the basics of international law.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
Youth participation is vital right to the exercise of citizenship of children as subjects of rights. This involves not just considering them as future citizens but as current citizens. However, we fully understand that children's voices are not heard, and it's necessary to create spaces that allow them to express themselves and contribute their ideas and projects. It's necessary to build empathy between adults and children, between officials and citizens.
The International Convention on the Rights of the Child was incorporated in the Constitution of Argentina in its 1994 reform. This principle is reflected in the National Law N. 26,061 which represents a first step. However, the proposed approach must be installed in the social sphere through real actions.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Our solution is to implement the right to participation of children and adolescents in educational institutions they attend and their community. We aim to create spaces where youth participation is a fact and allow both children and adults to share learning practices; and to build a collective understanding of the participation of children. These spaces are articulated through games, sports and the arts; they are the most effective and genuine form to engage children to express their opinions and ideas and to build empathy. The project aims to promote community involvement, together with community organizations and local political actors, in considering the role of children as leaders and contributors.
Educational institutions are important actors to include, together with the children, their families and others in the community that can contribute to build opportunities for participation and collective solutions.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
A good example is the Forum: in the 2nd Forum children told there were no places to play in their neighborhoods. From this, a group of five organizations managed to get funds from the Arcor Foundation and a commitment of the local state to properly equip two squares. The entire community participated in the process.
- Meetings and Consultations in schools and community centers: allow children and educators to discuss daily conflicts and create solutions together. In schools where the workshops took place, there was an improvement in the community environment and the proposed changes were generated by children, such as including table games at breaks.
- Arts and sports activities: allow groups of children to organize around group activities, and collectively build a children’s group. In the process they can be accompanied by adults, but children should always play a leading role. Groups that began participating in workshops are today co-managed with adults. The boys’ soccer workshop, for example, has redeveloped a wasteland to make a soccer field that today is part of a soccer league.
- Youth communications teams: children and youth inform their community about the projects’ activities, learning communications techniques in the process.
-Youth Group: promoting the rights in their community, creating relations with younger children.
-Cultural events: offer children and adults shared access to leisure activities.
-Monitoring of children in distress: it involves children and families together to solve difficult situations and return to school.

Arca’s tradition is to work with others. The territorial approach to the problem of childhood requires building networks. The specialty of Arca is our emphasis on citizenship for children.
In Cuartel V, 2 government primary schools and 5 community centers are associated with our project. We also work in collaboration with a cultural center, a public library and two state gardens. Along with several of them we make up the Network for the right of children on Cuartel V, which now is 5 years running, with 20 member organizations, including the city of Moreno.
The challenge is to build a shared vision from the paradigm of the child as a subject of law, and advance their participation in the actions and decisions that affect their lives.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
It created a commission of child participation in the city local house of representatives
-1500 children per year have gone through the process of assembly in their schools, creating solutions with adults to improve relationships (e.g. add games to breaks)
-1500 children per year were consulted in their schools, their views were heard and infrastructure was improved
-3 squares were redeveloped by children and organizations in the area, following the views of 300 children who participate annually in the Forum
-175 children and their families were accompanied by a professional for one year to resolve difficult situations and support the school attendance
-3000 children participate in art events in schools and community spaces, along with educators and families, improving their access to cultural property and the enjoyment shared across generations
-1500 children and youth have daily free access to spaces related to the arts, sport, leisure, communication and promotion of rights
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
-That children, educators, families and the authorities learn the rights of youth participation and generate actions to ensure compliance.
-That in educational institutions the views of children are taken into account in planning activities that involve them, particularly those working with children up to 6 years old.
-Connect groups of children and organized teenagers that characterize a children's collective and promote change in their communities.
-Install spaces of joint decision making between children and adults of each institution.
Set groundwork for the commission for the participation on the Local Council, ensuring that the voices of all children and teenagers are taken into account by policy makers dealing with the rights of children.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
At the same time the right to youth participation is recognized in the rhetoric, in practice the subject is considered counter-cultural (especially in the case of small children). To overcome this, we plan to:
-Promote the dissemination of information about the exercise of citizenship by children, producing material with the children benefited from the program, and improving the community participation.
-Promote the organization of a group of children and youth who participate in project and activities in schools and centers, generating empathy between them and adults.
-Require the local government to guarantee the right of children and youth to participate in policy advocacy instances of children.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]
Arca started working with the rights of children in 1986, when Betina Perona (founder) created a project to organize children living in the streets. Since then, we work with a participation model that stimulates the citizenship of children. In homes, we find that children’s participation is getting better: "Aha!" In 2000, we began to bond with the community of Cuartel V, as many children came to shelters from there and we wanted to prevent that situation.
We partner with schools and community centers, which were the first to detect situations of rights violations. The following year we got funding from a Spanish foundation. We decided to collectively go and build a territorial project that promoted the exercise of citizenship for children. In 2008 we began the process of closing an orphanage, which was completed in 2011 with the exit of the last child. At the same time, the citizenship project grew in Cuartel V.

At Arca we believe that all actors in our society must be involved in social investment. To be efficient and effective true collaboration requires the interaction between government, business, civil society organizations and citizens.
In this sense, we seek strategic partners in the private sector, civil society organizations and universities.
What type of team (staff, volunteers, etc.) will ensure that you achieve the growth milestones identified in the Social Impact section? [75 words]
The permanent staff of Arca consists of 16 sub-contracted employees, 11 full-time and 5 part-time.
We also work with workshop managers recruited for specific activities and peridoically have volunteers and trainees of different courses and universities.
During 2011, we formed a group of 20 young people (volunteers) from Cuartel V who were trained as rights advocate facilitators and community organizers with our support.
In addition, networking with other organizations means that all work on a common project.

As we head deeper into the 21st century, we face unprecedented challenges and potential conflicts. Empathy – for one another, for other species and for the planet – is the most important capacity we will need to face these challenges and yet, recent studies suggest that amongst some populations, particularly young people, empathy is actually on the decline. While we know some great solutions for how to foster empathy, how many more might be out there that need to be tapped into, tried and shared – including those we haven’t thought up yet! We need multiple solutions for a multi-pronged, multi-sectoral approach.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
“Think Empathy” will be a youth “think and do tank” on empathy that will support young people to work together in person and across borders using online platforms to reflect, share and innovate to generate ideas, lessons and create new strategies from the local to the global about how to foster empathy within ourselves and others. Existing and new models – including those that have not yet been thought of – will be developed, adapted, piloted and evaluated. These will include creative, play-based strategies. Based at an international, tuition-free, merit-based high school with students from 100 countries, the international element will support comparative analysis of approaches in different cultural contexts and enrich strategies. Lessons learned, ideas and concrete strategies will be shared and disseminated widely. Networks and communities of learning – including with groups of youth worldwide using online technology and multi-media tools – will enable mutual learning and exchange.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
As part of their curriculum, students at the school meet once a week to discuss ideas and develop specific projects for how to foster empathy. A portion of this time focuses on learning from the wisdom, experiences and lessons learned of individuals and organizations working on this issue around the globe, as well as reflecting on what empathy means in different contexts – cultural or otherwise. Specific links will be made using technology with groups of young people with whom IICRD is working in Thailand, Brazil and Colombia. With this network, as well as the fact that the students at this tuition-free, international baccleaureate high school represent 100 countries, the project offers young people a strong cross-cultural lens. Ongoing curriculum throughout the year supports reflection and students implement their projects during two intensive week-long sessions, and for a two-month period in between years 1 and 2 of their study, when they either run their project in Canada or their home countries. They are provided with a small amount of project funds where needed, as well as project planning and evaluation tools to support their project development and implementation. After running their project, students return to discuss lessons learned, experiences and refine strategies, focusing on disseminating and sharing their experience widely, using social platforms and multi-media. Online technology will be instrumental in getting the word out and initiating an international online community of youth worldwide working together to foster greater empathy in their communities.

We do not know of any other organization proposing a project similar to this. We know of a number of organizations who are pursuing projects with shared goals – for example, Roots of Empathy, the Greater Good Science Center, RandomKid – however, we do not view them as “competitors” but as key allies with whom we will network, exchange ideas and learn together through this project, in pursuit of what we perceive to be our common goals.

- “Think Empathy” youth hubs are established around the world, working together to create youth-led solutions for fostering empathy in the world
- Communities where students run their projects are more empathetic
- Tools are developed for how to measure empathy in cross-cultural environments
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
We believe the potential lack of funding poses the most significant challenge to this project in terms of being able to provide adequate support for young people to reflect, innovate, test and evaluate their projects. For this reason, the project is designed to start small – with a focus on one school – and focused on building a model, with resources and links, which can be scaled up and used by other schools and organizations. Linkages to other young people will focus on groups already working with organizations or schools – thus, requiring minimal financial support to enable engagement.

When in Brazil working with young people in 2010, a group of youth came up with an innovative solution for how to protect children and youth from internet-enabled child sexual exploitation – to create a video game for 6-10 year olds. The project helped pull together the right players and funded this initiative, which is being tested and piloted now, with the promise of educating hundreds of thousands of children at risk. It made me realize that young people have the solutions within them for the most daunting challenges they will face in their lifetimes, and that it is through listening to them, working with them and supporting them to actualize their visions and strategies that we can begin to hope to solve the world’s greatest challenges.

IICRD has strong partnerships with a range of national and international agencies and organizations, including UNICEF, governments such as the Canadian, Brazilian and Thai governments, INGOs such as Save the Children and Plan International, numerous universities, and national NGOs such as Mekong Youth Net in Cambodia and La Familia Ayara in Colombia. Supporting young people to access resources and expertise from institutions and organizations such as these is a real strength of the project.

The key lead on this project will be IICRD Senior Associate Rebeccah Nelems, who will draw on the expertise of IICRD staff and Associates as needed. Nelems will work with staff and faculty at the school to ensure adequate in-house support is provided to students. Also, the project will be integrated into the ongoing curriculum provided to students, and students will be supported to lead the project, reducing the need for outside supports.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
Right now, across Africa, waves of violence and poverty that stems from a lack of empathy between groups and low education levels continues to impede progress on the continent.In most African nations, there is a dire need for national education that empowers citizens with the ability to think through issues to reach peaceful progressive solutions. Tanzania is one of those nations. Tanzania currently faces a shortage of 85,000 teachers,low literacy levels, overcrowded classrooms and limited resources. Moreover, Tanzania does not currently feature a curriculum that supports the development of empathy and problem solving skills in its citizens. Such a national curriculum could help prevent future coup attempts in the democratic country, like the one we are witnessing now in Mali.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The multi-pronged solution to this national and continental issue is "Curricula For Change!," a scripted curriculum that uses the Tanzanian National Curriculum as a foundation to teach empathy and empower adolescents to be the engineers of social change while boosting literacy. The present prototype for CFC is the Tanzania Forms 3 and 4 English Language Curriculum. CFC uses games, dialogue and debates to raise adolescent awareness on child poverty, AIDS, the casualties of war and green technology use in Tanzania. African leaders like Wangari Maathai, are presented as models whose actions students can emulate. Lessons are constructed with the expectation that each class has forty to fifty students and teachers only have the curriculum itself, paper, pencils, chalk and household items at their disposal. Thus this innovation relies on creative improvisation to address the problem of limited resources, yet still maintains high academic standards for students.

Currently, much of the materials used in Tanzanian schools does not explicitly reveal to students how they can be agents for positive change in their country. Through daily instruction CFC will reveal to students that a better world is possible and can be created with their own hands. The CFC curricula is simple; it consists of a teachers manual for each grade level that comes complete with articles and worksheets that can be copied for student use. Initially these manuals will be distributed to World Teach Volunteers who will work in different schools across Tanzania. These teachers will be free to share the materials with fellow Tanzanian teachers who want to use them. Once the pilot program establishes student literacy growth through ongoing assessment results, I plan to partner with Uwezo Tanzania and the Tanzanian Ministry of Education to implement this curriculum in secondary schools nationwide. Pilot implementation of the CFC curriculum will begin this August. Although this program will be initially implemented through World Teach in Tanzania, it is my ultimate goal to partner with other education non-profits across Africa to create country specific curricula that focuses on empathy and self empowerment through social change. The ultimate goal of breaking the cycle of violence in Africa will be met by instilling empathy and problem solving skills in students through these tailor made nation wide curricula.

While there are competitors who are creating scripted curriculum to foster the development of bilingual learning in Tanzania, these curricula do not focus on empowering students to be advocates for social change in their own nation. At present, Tanzanian secondary schools only deliver learning in English. The creators of bilingual curricula seek to change Tanzania's laws so secondary schools will teach in Kiswahili, with English as a secondary language. If those developers succeed in convincing the ministry to change their laws, Curricula for Change would have to be translated for use in schools.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
At present, this curriculum has not been implemented in classrooms. Curriculum use will begin August 2012.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
I project if CFC curricula is implemented nationwide in Tanzania, it will boost secondary school graduates literacy levels by over 100%. These graduates will have the capability to think critically about social issues, which will make them better candidates for college and careers in Tanzania's public service sectors.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Two major barriers facing this project is attaining approval from the Tanzanian Ministry of Education to implement this program. To overcome hesitation on the part of the Ministry, I plan to provide them with data from the pilot program that indicates CFC's curricula teaches empathy in addition to literacy.

During my time at Harvard's School of Education, professors and visitors alike have stressed innovation as a vehicle for social change. I always assumed it had to be something technical, like creating social media to engage youth. However, when I began working as World Teach's Tanzania Curriculum Developer, the Director, Helen Claire Sievers, mentioned the program I was developing for World Teach stood a good chance of being used nationwide by Tanzania's Ministry of Education because the country is desperate for educational resources. At that moment I realized every word I put on the page had implications for other people's lives. If co-opted, my curriculum, made of only paper and imagination, will eventually reach thousands of students with minimal effort on my part. I decided then to make sure every lesson was infused with issues surrounding empathy and social justice that provide opportunities for students to develop problem solving skills at low cost.

At present I am a partner with World Teach and Uwezo Tanzania. As an World Teach employee, I am required to create curriculum for volunteer use. World Teach has ties with the Tanzanian Ministry of Education and has a history of providing educational materials for developing countries, like Rwanda. Uwezo charts literacy development in Tanzania, Kenya and other countries. I am currently using their data to determine where there is the most need in Tanzania.Upon my arrival in Tanzania, I will work with Uwezo's researchers to draft other solutions for the country's educational crisis.

In order for the CFC curriculum to work, I will need a team of teachers and field coordinators to ensure effective implementation. The World Teach program provides this team since this curriculum was developed for the organization's use.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
We are trying to raise awareness that all individuals –regardless of their abilities - are an important part of our society. Young children don’t see differences but they learn differences. There’s a need to teach young children that differences should be embraced so they become empathetic adults and leaders. We see a lack of early grade empathy training between youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their typical peers. Young children are not adequately prepared to be in inclusive classrooms with peers that have disabilities. Empathy training is as much for the adults in the children’s lives. Most times children are reacting to the adults in their lives and learning adverse behavior. Parents also don’t understand and lack the tools to talk to their kids about empathy.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Our solution is creating a portable curriculum that can be used in classrooms and within youth groups to teach kids how to be accepting and empathetic toward their peers. We want to clearly differentiate feeling sorry for someone and having empathy. The specific focus will be to teach children about empathy when it comes to their peers with disabilities. We want to have activities for teachers to use in classrooms for those teachable moments with their students. Our solution is creating modules that can teach young children what it is empathy, why it’s important, and the effect it has (or will have) on society as a whole. The portability will allow us to share what we’re learning in our classrooms with other community organizations and schools. We also want to create a toolbox so that youth organizations can activate empathy in their communities. We want to give adults activities and tools to talk to their kids about empathy at home and to get the whole family involved.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
We want children to think, solve problems, and work as a team in classrooms. We don’t want to shy away from using words such as autism or using a wheelchair. We want kids to see that a certain disability is part of who their peers are and not what they are. For example we say to kids in our classrooms that their peer needs the wheelchair to get around like you need your legs.
Specific activities would include kids doing a self-portrait and putting up pictures of all the kids and their self-portraits and asking the questions: Do we look the same? What’s different? What are the similarities? We want to show we all have similarities and things we can offer. We’ll also teach kids about authentic friendships. Authentic friendships bring joy and positivity in your life.
We also want to talk about the concept of not being afraid. Differences are not scary. Peers with disabilities are not strangers; they are our friends and part of our school. We’ll also do workshops for parents and give scenarios to see how they would handle a certain situation before training and after training: What would you do if your child points to a disabled person in a store? What would you say and how would you teach empathy? The before and after scenarios would be used to see if the training made them change how they would respond. Kids are brutally honest and we want parents to use those moments as teachable moments. We would need to do this with our staff and teachers so they can model it within their own classrooms.

Our main competitor is the school system. They have already have activities around character and tolerance. The problem with those programs is that they’re taught to the masses and they don’t get down to the specifics. It’s very assembly style. There’s not that follow up to talk about what was learned and if it sunk in and is being implemented. Empathy is not one stop shopping training. Challenges include having parents that don’t want empathy taught to their kids; they want to do the teaching. There’s a trust issues with parents so we need to say that this is about understanding the world as whole and not changing your child.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Our model of inclusion has sustained itself for over 20 years. Our program has seen greater expansion over the years. Parents seek out this program because they want their child without a disability to be in this model to learn about differences and become accepting of others and learn empathy. We have made ourselves available to teach others across the state on inclusive education. We’re thought of as exemplars in the area of inclusive education of young people and youth. Our work around inclusion and empathy with young people has been woven into the greater strategic plan of the entire organization. Our organization is embedding the inclusion work in the children’s program into the teen, adult, and senior programs run it runs. The inclusion and empathy work started in the children’s program has become a catalyst for the whole organization’s community builder work throughout Montgomery County.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
We hope to have a greater impact in the community so that this curriculum is taught in schools, churches, and civic organizations. We would like this training to be part of the community service hours high school students need to graduate in the state of Maryland. We also want parents to become advocates for empathy training in schools as a result of the marketing of this curriculum. We hope this training will lead to more youth with disabilities being greater self-advocates and educating their typical peers both within and outside the classroom.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Adults not seeing the significance and not supporting our efforts will be a big barrier. We’ll need to show parents the value of early empathy training but also ongoing empathy training. Parents not taking what is learned in the classroom and applying it at home will be another barrier. We'll need to give parents multiple tools to apply at home so they can sustain what is taught in classrooms. Outcome tracking is also another barrier. We will need to make a commitment to follow through as children get older to make sure we see long term outcomes

The Arc has a rich history spanning over 60 years. In 1950, a small group of parents and other concerned individuals came together to act as voices for change. At the time, little was known about the condition of intellectual disabilities. There were virtually no programs and activities in communities to assist in the development and care of children and adults with intellectual disabilities or to support families.
It was common at that time for doctors to tell parents that the best place for their child was in an institution. Emboldened by their collective desire to raise their children in the home and their stubborn refusal to accept that institutionalization was the only option, The Arc’s founders fought even harder. They wanted their children to lead fulfilling lives out in the community and not shuttered away in dark institutions. It was in that spirit that The Arc was born.

We’ll rely on our existing staff, teachers, and nurses at our children’s center. We’ll also utilize the parents of the children who use our children services to become better parent advocates while their child is in school and in community activities. Our executive management and management team also have a commitment to inclusion throughout the entire agency. We’ll also utilize our network of volunteers to help us sustain our efforts in the greater community.

There’s definitely a need to have a place where groups such as ours can connect across the country. There are a lot of great models nationwide but it’s hard to know who is doing what and what their results are to date. The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
Rwanda’s recent history has been characterized by ethnic tensions, mistrust, and violence. Post-colonial leaders preached sectarianism and extreme hatred, which culminated in the 1994 genocide. Youth were often under-educated or not educated at all, furthermore being denied a public voice and thus easy prey for misuse. They were involved in carrying out atrocities during the 1994 genocide since they were not able to critically reflect on the propaganda of the government. Thus, Never Again Rwanda helps youth to build their critical thinking and presentation capacity, soft skills not taught in Rwandan schools to prevent such an event to happen again.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Rwandan students are being taught different subjects in today’s schools: Math, Computers, English or Biology. However, soft skills like critical thinking, presenting on topics, teambuilding or voicing your own opinion are not included. Never Again Rwanda wants to fill this gap by providing secondary school students the opportunity to learn and practice these skills outside the classroom and then bring them back to school with them. This will be done with the method of public speaking. It provides them with the opportunity to learn such necessary life skills, voice their opinion and the chance to be active citizens (agents of change) in today’s Rwanda.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
There are three major steps to make this project successful: A first step is to train students and their teachers over a four-day training in Critical Thinking skills (knowledge on systemic thinking, conflict resolution, looking at discriminatory attitudes and practices), non-violent communication skills (including active listening and giving constructive feedback), research and presentation skills to prepare them for the competition. Teachers are explicitly included to enable them to support their students and allow for a transfer of these skills into the school. Secondly a public speaking competition is being held where students can practice their newly gained talents in a fun and open way. This gives them a platform to express their opinion being heard by invited guests, such as school principals, district officials, students, local politicians and members of other NGO’s. It also encourages them to continue. Topics of these competitions are for example: “Standing up against mobbing in schools”, “Bridging the divide between poor and rich” or “Identity in Rwanda – Who is/can be Rwandan?”. Thirdly, students and schools are supported while incorporating trainings and competitions into their school’s life. During this process, students evaluate their own learning curve to enable and encourage them to improve even further.

There are different organizations instilling critical thinking skills in schools. However, Never Again Rwanda is the only organization that brings training together with practice and support for incorporating it into school life. We started with debate competitions in 2006, being encouraged by the Ministry of Education to continue and asked by other NGO’s to train them in our approach. Now we move to public speaking, being the first organization using this method. One partner organization in both endeavours – debate and public speaking – is Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle, working in the West, while Never Again Rwanda covers the South, East and Kigali.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Never Again Rwanda has experience with debate trainings and competitions and supported schools institutionalize it since 2006. In 2011 alone we trained 149 students & teachers from, hosted three debate competitions, each attended by over 300 listeners. We are now building experience with public speaking and expect similar outcomes with schools adopting public speaking into their curriculum because students want to continue practicing this fun method. Both debate and public speaking build on Rwanda's cultural value of rich oral traditions. Thus, this format fits wonderfully into the Rwandan culture. Furthermore, public speaking is not resource intensive for schools to adopt. Therefore, it is the ideal format for Rwandan schools to implement and easily adopt to create empathy and critical thinking skills in Rwandan schools.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
Our project will give youth a voice to reflect on pertinent issues in Rwandan society. Through training and providing a platform they can begin being active citizens. We are showing students and teachers the value of public speaking and we will support them in installing this fun method in their own schools as was experienced with the method of debate.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
A good collaboration with school administration as well as district officials is vital since they must acknowledge the importance of public speaking for schools first. A second challenge is language with French and English strongholds in different regions. To ensure that everybody can express themselves, both languages are encouraged during trainings and competitions. Another barrier might be teachers wanting per diem during trainings, which contradicts our philosophy. To overcome this, the importance of their engagement and what this opportunity hold for their career need to be demonstrated and their engagement during the process be appreciated.

During the 2011 commemoration debate, organized by Never Again Rwanda, it became clear that debate as a method to tackle commemoration is not suitable (since Rwandan commemoration cannot be divided into for and against). Wanting to expand on issues of commemoration and peace building, the method of public speaking was introduced. To allow for a maximum impact it was decided to come up with an extended training including topics such as systemic thinking, conflict resolution or active listening. To round it up it was agreed that support for schools who want to incorporate it into their school life will be given since the triage – training – competition – support – has already proven effective with the method of debate.

NAR partnerships range from local NGO’s, government institutions and the private sector. More specifically Never Again Rwanda are or were engaged in partnerships with the following organizations: USAID, UNDEF, AKIBA UHAKI FOUNDATION, UN HABITAT, Global funds for Children, National Endowment for Democracy, GIZ, Rwanda Governance Advisory council and many other local Associations.

The Peace Building Program Coordinator will take a lead. He is supported by an international peace advisor from GIZ, who is building his and the organization's capacity. The financial and logistic department will support them as well as all other staff members during competitions, where many hands are needed. Furthermore an intern will help with different organizational matters to make this project a success.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
One of the fundamentally important dimensions of school climate is how “connected” people feel to one another in school. This relationality is a powerful predictor of adolescent heath, academic outcomes, group cohesion, respect and mutual trust, and violence prevention. Snapshot: 60% of middle school students say that they have been bullied; 2/3 of students who are targets become bullies; 888 hate groups are currently operating in the United States, an increase of 48% since 2000; 61% of Americans say they would not vote for a candidate who was an Atheist; 20% of high school students have seriously considered suicide.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Through a carefully focused curriculum, Camp Everytown promotes life, leadership, and relationship skill-building through activities such as (1) Understanding Prejudice, (2) Gender Empowerment, (3) Understanding Family Cultures (4) Segregation exercises, (5) Privilege/Advantage exercises, and (6) Disability exercises. All interactions are designed to lead students to a respectful understanding of what others are experiencing -- in other words, empathy. According to a recent Camp Delegate, “Camp gave me the confidence to just start talking with people and try to find points of commonality, to dive in and connect with people, which of course is the most important way to destroy stereotypes, by building those connections.” Another participant said: "It seemed I was making huge life changes at Camp every hour instead of every 10 years."

Camp Everytown is a four-day, three night residential retreat through which high school students, faculty, and other community members learn to value one another across difference. Through group processes and exercises, Camp builds awareness of prejudice, appreciation for diversity, empathy, and new leadership skills.
Example
"Everybody stand up," the facilitator says. "Stand in a line and respond as I suggest. If you have ever skipped a meal at home because there wasn't enough money, take a step back." The students look around, and one by one, they take that first step." If you have ever thought of suicide, take a step back." Three students hesitantly step and then look at each other. One young man starts to cry." I thought I was the only one," he whispers. The facilitator continues: "If your parents ever told you that you were beautiful or smart, take a step forward. If they told you that you would never be anybody, take a step back." After several more questions the facilitator says, "Now look where everyone is...The ones in the back are survivors; they are here against all odds. It's up to all of us to bring them forward with us."

The Camp Everytown model is unique. The program closest to ours is a one-day, site-based program called "Challenge Day." This program gives in smaller doses the values we are able to cover in depth in our four day, off-site program: respect, empathy, self-esteem and leadership. Because "Challenge Day" is only one day and is held onsite, the cost to the school is much less. However, we don't see this as having an impact on our growth, as most schools who participate in Camp Everytown use "Challenge Day" to spread the values of Camp to non-delegates among their students.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Camp has served over 17,000 students in the last 14 years. Teachers and students all report an improvement in school climate; student involvement in school activities has risen; levels of appreciation for diversity have increased; division of students into separate groups has decreased significantly. In fact, Bob Grover, former Vice-Principal of Fremont High School told us: "Camp changed the campus climate. When you walk across the FHS campus today, instead of pockets of separation, you see students of different ethnicities mingling together. The student leaders are now representative of the whole student body." And Phan Ngo, Deputy Chief of the San Jose Police Department, says, "I am convinced that these programs have made a significant contribution to the safety and well being of our community.”
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
We intend to expand the current number of Camps per year to 21 -- nearly double the current number of around 700 students. This would mean serving 1260 to 1680 students per year. In addition, we hope to pilot a site-specific follow-up program in two high-need high schools. An important aspect of the follow-up program is for Camp Delegates (students who have finished Camp at some point) to develop and complete a peer-led and managed community service project.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The major barrier is financial. The cost of Camp is $375 per student. A few schools have been able to budget Camp and cover all costs. Now, with many schools facing hard budgeting choices, Silicon Valley FACES has pledged to locate funders and secure much of the funding for these camps. The road has proven to be rather long and winding. Loyal funders, while still giving support, are giving in smaller amounts. Some foundations have closed altogether. We are now widening our search, approaching new categories of funders (such as the County General Fund), and increasing our requests to individuals.

Camp Director Richard Valenzuela recounts, "When I went to Camp as a 19-yr old college kid, I saw that something positive could be done beyond marching/protesting. When I became an adult I wanted to offer Camp so more kids could participate. Parents and grandparents who had attended camp approached him. They remembered their own experiences at Camp had been a turning point in their lives; they wanted their kids to be have the same growth-experiences. "Putting a class into a different physical setting," he says, " generates a bond among class members and creates a learning community." Says one student, "Camp changed my life!" Says another, "More than anything, Camp Everytown opened my eyes... Camp Everytown will forever be a part of my life."

We have several partnerships established where Camp Delegates can create and carry out community service projects. Delegates can choose from the following nonprofits and develop a project that has special appeal. Some of these nonprofits might include the following: Asian Americans for Community Involvement, Humane Society, Sacred Heart Community Service, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, YWCA, and Mexican American Community Service Association, among others.

A partner agency or community volunteer introduces FACES to a school which they know is interested in character building and increasing empathy. Our Director of Education trains teachers and the Site Coordinator about Camp, holds a meeting for parents, shares best practices, helps interview potential attendees, participates in the schools’ Camp fundraising activities, and helps select volunteers to attend Camp (1:7 ratio). Team = 1 FACES staff, 3 teachers, 1 site coordinator, and 12-20 volunteers.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
We are bringing awareness to bullying and cyber-bullying. We are trying to reduce the instances of bullying and reduce the instances of bullycide.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
We provide presentations and educational sessions to students as well as adults that have interactions with teens and pre-teens. We hope that by providing presentations to middle schools and high schools the youth can see the impact it has on their community. In addition, we hope that it shows those that might be bullied that they aren't alone and somebody is always there for them.
The parent and adult sessions outline the warning signs of bullying and ways to help a teen or pre-teen that might be bullied or has been bullied.
Both cover the bullying statistics and depending on the age group for the teens, it also covers the LGBT youth. (Lesbian, gay, Bi-sexual and transgender).
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
For the Teens and Pre-Teens:
Our presentations start with a slide show showing past youth who have committed suicide due to bullying. It is set to music and right now features approximately 25 youth ages 11-19.
We then send a tweet out at the beginning to demonstrate the immediacy and reach of cyber-bullying. Hope for Teens then presents a PowerPoint presentation that lasts approximately an hour and allows for questions and answers. We then make sure we allow for another 30 minutes to an hour for those that have questions but don't want to ask in public forum.
For the Parents and Adults:
We start the presentations the same way with the slideshow of those that have committed suicide due to bullying.
We then go on to explain the presentations we show to the teens and answer any questions that they might have based on their teens reaction to their presentation.
Afterwards, the adults see a PowerPoint presentation on the warning signs of bullying and how they can help their child. This includes statistics on bullying and who are the most common youth bullied.
Any of these presentations are held at schools, youth organizations or upon request.

Our peers would include the following: The Trevor Project, GLSEN, LGBT Center of Raleigh, and in the United Kingdom there is an organization called Beat Bullying. We do not have any competitors because we are the ONLY non-profit in Wake County specifically dedicated to youth and anti-bullying efforts.
If there is a non-profit that starts due to the success of Hope for Teens then we will have competition. Since we are the first in our niche our experience and knowledge would counter-act any potential competitors.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
To date we have received positive feedback from schools that have had us do presentations. In addition, we have had many teens or pre-teens speak up about bullying to us, their parents or somebody in their school.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
Over the next 1-3 years we hope to see a decrease in the number of bullying incidents that occur in schools or over the internet. We also hope to get out to more schools and on a recurring basis so that we can capture all youth in the general area.
In addition, we hope that the school systems will assist in our efforts of taking bullying and cyber-bullying seriously and be more pro-active in their approach instead of reactive.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The biggest barrier we have to our success would be schools not taking bullying or cyber-bullying seriously. If the schools do not take it seriously the perpetuate the idea that it isn't something to be concerned about.
By providing statistics and showing the community how devastating bullying can be on a community as a whole, we hope that schools and youth based organizations will take bullying and cyber-bullying more seriously.

When teen Tyler Clementi jumped off of the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey he was the 12th teen to take their life in six weeks back in 2010.
Mr. Clementi took a piece of the founder's childhood that day. Growing up in Manhattan she would watch the light on top of the George Washington Bridge & it would help her fall asleep since she was 3 years old. Now that bridge held more than pleasant memories and something needed to be done.
That was when we realized there were no anti-bullying resources specific to teens in Wake County and decided one had to be started. We then realized that our impact could be so much more and not to limit just to Wake County and we are open to assisting in any county in any state.

We work with LGBT Center of Raleigh because the LGBT youth are the ones bullied the most. (90% of all LGBT youth are bullied) We enjoy being a straight ally because it helps others see you don't have to be gay to support our gay youth.

Our Board has been instrumental in helping our efforts as well as volunteers that have dedicated many hours to our efforts. We do not have a staff except for the one that does presentations.

We would love to have pro-bono help in the grant writing area to assist in raising funds. Any investment assistance we can get is always welcome too.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
Due to the mass culture intensification the individuality and cultural sensitivity goes to the margin. To encourage youth' social and emotional development the project promotes the cooperation of cultural and educational institutions and goes to school with new interdisciplinary program aimed at advansing empathy in education.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The nationally acknowledged art pieces [reproduction] will be brought to the school and will invite youngsters to deep in the context/emotions/meanings. The professional art is taken as the mean to provoke person to look and uncover what below the surface [to develop the skills underway].
The project invites regional schools to make the space for the gallery. Together with professional art critics as well as modern art funds, the conceptions of the exhibition will be developed / reproduced and distributed to the schools monthly. The methodology material as well as training for teachers will be organized in order to prepare teachers to works with the exhibition(s) properly.
The project applies to rural/regional communities, where after the economic crises the main activity became TV program, promoting mass culture. The individuality and cultural sensitivity goes to the margin.
The project invites schools to pay attention to emotional and social development of school students.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
The project is planning to open Modeling gallery in more then 100 Lithuania schools (in the common spaces of schools). Every month the new art exhibition will be run in Modeling gallery (-ies). The conception will be developed by professional art critics (in cooperation with proffesional cultural institutions). The artists /critics/ representatives will be invited to the schools to discuss the pieces, the issues of the interest, the different approaches to the pieces, etc. With every exhibition new methodological material is introduced to the teachers; the introduction material [with questions leading to deeper analysis of the work] is printed and distributed to the visitors [school students/local community]. The school student is promoted to share their approach in local meetings as well as on internet [after the internet instrument will be developed].
In 3-5 years perspective the project is planning to open gallery space for international art and to introduce the exhibitions from different regions [Europe, Far East, America, etc.] by raising the actual questions and promoting local community to deep in the issues of the world.
The individual dialog with art piece , moderated methodologicaly, will significally contribute to the emocional and social development

The social and emotional development for a quite a long time is referring to the different institutions but not to the secondary school. Since the topic came to national strategic documents, the issue did not reach the school, cause they do not know how to work with it properly.
Galleries are operating in this field, but they are located in the biggest towns, are operating very locally, are business oriented.
The team of the project has the experience on how to work with secondary schools, knows their proflematic, key-actors, specifications, as well as has knowledge in cultural field. This is the strong side of the project . The team is ready to meet the challenges and to manage them properly.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
We live in a world where most young people have very few outlets to express their unique voice. In schools, communities and society at large they are not treated equally and instead are discriminated against because of their age, race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, ability, sexual orientation, gender identification, or socioeconomic situation. Despite this, how do we create a space for them that empowers them to make a difference in their own lives and carry that change into the greater community and the broader the world? How do we level the societal playing field?
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Brooklyn Free School (BFS) and its students comprise an environment of unprecedented diversity, students are not segregated by age, sex, or ability, and they are respected for their innate curiosity, empathy, and creativity. They are given the space and trust to direct their own learning through play and exploration, constructivist teaching, collaborative course work, and self-directed student initiatives.
BFS's program is run democratically, with the democratic meeting at its core. Weekly meetings allow for safe environments where students respond to the circumstances of their lives, using tools like the conflict mediation, personal reflection, diversity awareness, and community responsibility to develop empathy and solve individual and community issues in a natural way.
In addition, BFS conducts identity workshops with staff, parents, and students where ideas, thoughts, and feelings are explored and shared.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Dee had been working hard on building her train track for over an hour, and it only took two seconds for Ty, pretending to be a tornado, to wreck it. Dee was upset and she tried to tell Ty, but he said he didn't care. "It was fun being a tornado.", he said. So Dee she called a meeting.
At Brooklyn Free School when an issue arises that cannot be solved by the individual, the individual asks for help. Help can come from peers, small groups or the whole community. During the meeting, students and staff sit in a circle so that everyone can be seen and heard. Dee explained why she called the meeting. Students asked if Ty understood how Dee felt, and they pressed Ty to explain how he would feel if he were in Dee's place. The meeting ended with a suggestion to repair the damage to the tracks together, and this hopefully leads to a more contained tornado next time.
Cooperative play and the space to learn from real situations are such important aspects of BFS, for students of all ages, empathetic reasoning is called upon daily while they learn how to work together and examine how they fit into the school as a larger community. Through these regular interactions, students develop concrete tools that enable them to readily resolve conflicts, both in and out of school.

Manhattan Free School (MFS), GreeneHill School, and Brooklyn Waldorf School are other schools with child-centered curriculum.
Only MFS shares a similar genesis and goals as Brooklyn Free School (BFS). However, BFS is more established and twice the size of MFS and is located a reasonable distance away, so we only compete for students in some areas of NYC that border Brooklyn.
BFS has created a unique niche for itself in terms of a truly diverse school where students are empowered to be themselves, trusted to pursue their interests, and encouraged to solve their problems and those of their community using the democratic process.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Our biggest impact is with our over 200 current and former students. Parents comment that their children love school, develop a powerful voice, and learn valuable skills that they use in every aspect of their life. As one young student explained, "although life isn't fair, it doesn't mean that we can't make our school fair."
In order to spread our mission, Brooklyn Free School co-founded the Democratic Education Symposium with Medgar Evers College to create a dialog among parents, students, educators, and community leaders about the role of democracy in education.
Our community has taken trips to other schools, most memorably to Tanzania.
Sparked interest in our program from people worldwide after being featured on This American Life, ep.424:Kid Politics.
We supported the creation and development of Manhattan Free School and Teddy McArdle Free School.
BFS contributed to the creation of the National Association of Democratic Schools and has organized an annual conference.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
Brooklyn Free School will continue to grow by expanding to 75 students, incorporating a preschool, and maintaining an after school program that is offered to students not enrolled in BFS.
We will market our unique model of education through educational outreach, producing an annual TEDx event with themes focused on democratic education, offering tours and talks through Meetup.com, and continuing to attend and organize conferences.
BFS will continue to sponsor local events that incorporate the greater community.
We will continue and expand our Intern Program that welcomes students and educators from around the world into the school to learn and participate in democratic education.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The biggest threat to the success of our program is an inability to maintain our diversity. Our diversity is affected by our ability to reach out to potential students and their families, as well as fiscal requirements that tighten our capacity to offer a sliding scale of tuition, allowing Brooklyn Free School to be more accessible to all.
To overcome these potential obstacles, we have employed a Diversity Coordinator who facilitates dialog within the program among students, staff, and parents and assists in the self exploration of our mission. Also, we will generate revenue and supplement our sliding scale tuition through expansion into early childhood education and extended day programs.

What really got me was a story in the New York Times in 2002 that described a student at Sudbury Valley School who went fishing at their pond every day for four years! That made me rethink everything. I began to understand how powerful a school experience would be if students were trusted to pursue their passions with the full support of the teachers and administrators. I imagined a school where students could be respected and supported for who they are and be encouraged to become who they wanted to be. A school where students would build a community together and were given the tools they needed to respect, listen to, and honor each other as individuals, as they figured out how to live and learn together.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
The Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center (GNOFHAC) is a non-profit civil rights organization dedicated to eradicating housing discrimination. Recent studies by GNOFHAC show that housing discrimination is still a frequent occurrence in the greater New Orleans area. For example a 2007 audit showed a 58% rate of discrimination against African-Americans, and a 2009 audit showed widespread discrimination against people with disabilities. Families with children are particularly vulnerable to discrimination; according to HUD, 1,500 families reported that they were discriminated against on the basis of having children in 2010. Because of these statistics, GNOFHAC seeks an innovative strategy for reaching families with information about fair housing and the impact of discrimination.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The Equal Opportunity Game is a tool for educators and advocates that GNOFHAC developed in partnership with schools, community centers, and youth-serving organizations. The game and associated curriculum educate young people about civil rights, the importance of diversity and equal opportunity, and the impact of discrimination. GNOFHAC believes that youth should be educated about housing discrimination so that they may become advocates for equity and watchdogs for injustice in their communities. Because GNOFHAC intends for students to share their experiences of the Equal Opportunity Game with their parents, guardians or teachers, the workshop also functions to educate adults in the community about fair housing rights. Families with children are particularly vulnerable to housing discrimination and are specifically protected under the Fair Housing Act. Thus the Equal Opportunity Game represents an innovative form of outreach to a population deeply affected by discrimination.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
GNOFHAC partners with dozens of educators, schools, youth-serving organizations and advocacy groups to bring the Equal Opportunity Game and its related children's book "The Fair Housing Five & the Haunted House" to youth in New Orleans and as far away as Michigan, Alabama, and Washington, DC. The game is designed to build empathy and cultivate critical thinking about social issues by putting students in the shoes of a person who has experienced the impact of housing discrimination.
In the game, students are assigned characters and must work in teams to find the housing that best meets their characters’ needs. Some of the characters “experience” housing discrimination, and students see the impact discrimination has on access to education, healthcare, jobs, and other resources via “situation cards” that they draw periodically. Students complete journal entries throughout the game to reflect on their experiences. The Equal Opportunity Game builds an appreciation of diversity, and a vocabulary around justice and equity in participating youth. As our next generation of leaders, it is important that youth learn about the impact of discrimination and the importance of equal opportunity at a young age so that they may bring these insights to their communities and work throughout their lives.
GNOFHAC hopes to expand the reach of the project by partnering with schools throughout Louisiana to conduct workshops, as well as by producing copies of the game materials and facilitator guide to distribute to schools and fair housing organizations around the country.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Since spring, 2010, when GNOFHAC launched its youth outreach project, staff have partnered with 11 (eleven) schools, community centers and youth-serving organizations to conduct 23 (twenty-three) youth workshops. All together approximately 350 (three hundred and fifty) students and their parents or guardians as well as fifteen (15) teachers have been served by GNOFHAC’s civil rights workshops. Students and teachers have attested to the positive and transformative impact on participants. One teacher reflected, "This workshop, superbly designed and executed, prompted challenging discussion and higher level thinking in our classroom community. We have been using themes and lessons learned as a jumping off point for further investigation and as connection to other areas of the curriculum." Students have said, "I loved the board game, because I think that it was an awesome and fun game" and "I learned a lot about fair housing... especially that discrimination needs to be stopped!"
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
Over the next 1-3 years, GNOFHAC hopes to expand the reach of the Equal Opportunity Game youth civil rights workshops. By 2015, GNOFHAC will have reached students in all sixty-three (63) New Orleans public schools serving students in grades one through six through workshop facilitation and/or distribution of its children's book "The Fair Housing Five & the Haunted House." In addition, GNOFHAC will develop curricula for high school students about fair housing and begin working in five (5) area high schools. Finally, GNOFHAC will train staff from at least five (5) fair housing agencies around the country to facilitate workshop activities with youth in their districts and build partnerships with local schools.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
GNOFHAC staff have found it challenging to market its youth workshops to public schools and teachers who have limited time for enrichment activities and must connect all curricula to state Grade Level Expectations and testing standards. GNOFHAC will overcome this barrier by developing a set of materials that outline the connections between workshop elements and required curricula. In addition, GNOFHAC staff have built a partnership with Young Audiences, a national organization whose local chapter coordinates extracurricular programming in a number of area schools, and staff will work to build similar relationships with other youth-serving organizations.

The idea for the Equal Opportunity Game came out of the friendship between a fair housing advocate and a New Orleans teacher. One day at a coffee shop the GNOFHAC staff member was expressing her frustration at the number of housing discrimination complaints received recently from families with children who encountered landlords with formal or informal "no kids" policies. The staff member suggested that there was a need to engage youth in conversations about equal housing opportunity because of the ways in which housing discrimination impacts their quality of life. Meanwhile, the teacher was sharing her interest in implementing a unit on social justice and equity that connected to required English Language Arts and social studies curricula. And thus, a mutually rewarding partnership was born. GNOFHAC partnered with the teacher and her classroom of fourth and fifth grade students to develop the Equal Opportunity Game and implement its flagship workshop in April 2010.

Chattanooga has a severe lack of empathy and conflict resolution education. Violence and gang activity have been steadily increasing in our city for the past 20 years. Education in nonviolence has been shown to actively counter rising violence by creating a greater sense of personal connection to the community and its inhabitants.
“Unless we teach our children peace, somebody else will teach them violence, ... Each year, fewer than 2 percent of [U.S.] schools are taking peace education seriously.” Colman McCarthy
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The Chattanooga Peace Center seeks to be the epicenter for peace and nonviolent education in Chattanooga and the following areas. The center will house seminars, discussions, speeches and other in house events that will address the problem of violence and highlight alternatives to them. Staff and volunteers at the center will seek to advance peace education in the community by actively seeking out schools that are willing to have such classes, short courses or after school meetings.
The center will also house an interactive museum with exhibits that link to local history as well as global peace movements. One such exhibit will be a milk shake bar that is modeled after a Woolsworth cafe that local students staged sit ins during the American civil rights movement. Other exhibits will be built around a Gandhian spinning wheel, the Milgram shock experiment, and an axe head model of McIntyre's 5 Steps to Tyranny.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Education curriculum that will be incorporated will be used to increase feelings of empathy, connection to other individuals and populations, and commitment to community improvement in students. this will be achieved through after school classes, in-school classes, assemblies, seminars and etc.
The center will also prioritize time for teachers to develop new techniques and models for empathy education.
The museum part of the center will have several interactive exhibits to teach empathy. One example of this will be a milkshake bar designed to look at one that ties to our city's history, a 1960's Woolsworth bar that area high school students staged sit ins at. Visitors will be given sit in rules like the original sitters used to maintain a peaceful protest. They will also hear examples of how the sitters were treated, like having cigarettes put out on them. This will be done to demonstrate empathy for the sitters. This will also show the impact that peaceful demonstrations and behaviors can have.
A second area would have a Gandhian spinning wheel to show the great impact a small, morally motivated action can make to do something so great as to change a society.
A third exhibit would have a model of the shock box used in the Milgram shock experiments. It would be used to show that everyone can do horrible things if motivated in the right ways. 5 Steps to Tyranny would be compared to this to make people aware of factors that can lead someone to act violently or heroic-ly. By creating awareness of these factors, participants will be less likely to make violent decisions.

This is a program that social service agencies, school systems and the local government could all support. There is virtually no competition in this specific area in the city because no one is teaching about empathy, nonviolence or etc. City government could support this because of the tourism aspect. Educators will value the inclusion of topics that aren't currently included. Social service agencies will value the potential impact upon individuals and the community.

We seek to have regular classes in at least 10 new schools in the next 3 years. We also seek to have regular in house seminars, classes, speeches, critical discussions and etc. We are also hoping to have a four exhibit museum open within that same time frame.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
The greatest barrier to our project at the moment is lack of support. The project has not gone beyond discussion between a few key players.
A second barrier is the lack of funding. There are no funding sources at the moment though several promising area agencies and community funds have been identified.

When I took my first peace studies class, I was a novice with an interest in the subject but no great respect for the true need or impact it could have. "If we don't teach our children nonviolence, someone will teach them violence." I looked back upon my own education and remembered a lot of facts about generals, battles, wars and etc. I never remember a single teacher in all of my primary education years, discussing nonviolent movements or the leaders of them. I was never taught appropriate ways to resolve conflict with people. I learned nonviolence through violent people but many people would have simply carried on their traditions and behaviors. What came natural to me doesn't come natural to most. But nonviolent conflict resolution can be taught. It can also be valued by communities and this can lead to a decrease in crime, gang activity, violence and so many other social ills. Adding this one subject to a school system's curriculum could do so much good, it would be silly not to.

The foundation of education in tribal children is very weak. Though efforts were provided to enhance education, but ground realities still reflect a sorry picture. We see that the problem revolves around the teachers who are the knowledge provider to students. Being their GURUS, they should be trained in the manner that they will be able to build a strong foundation for students. The problem remains in lack of support and training to teachers (no human resource development being provided to teachers. Teachers do not own the system and students thus become the major loosers of education.

Punadi is a telugu word meaning Foundation.It is a quality enhancement Programme initiated by Department of Tribal Welfare, Andhra Pradesh to achieve basic competencies among tribal children of all types of schools under the management of Tribal welfare department. We are focusing on children from 3rd to 9th class. The objective is to achieve basic competencies in the subjects of Telugu, mathematics,English and Life Skills; Improving quality of class room process so as to achieve the basic competencies. Through teaching lifeskills we will be able to advance empathy in education fields of tribal children.The Programme covers all the children studying from classes 3rd to 9th of all Government Primary School, Ashram Schools, Residential Schools, and Tribal Welfare Hostels etc. functioning under the management of department of Tribal Welfare. The purpose is Understanding the status of children learning performances in the basic competencies.Children are the basic stakeholder.

It make us feel proud that we are building foundation of 3 lakh students and that too minorities.

Elected by students Classroom Peace and Justice Committee serves as the Court of Justice and processes all discipline cases. Teachers have no right to punish students; During Home-Room hours Peace and Justice Committee (PJC) processes discipline and conflict cases. Students and teachers could file charges against others. Defendants have to prepare a Correction Proposal. If PJC decides for the plaintiff the offender is charged with obligation to correct the wrongdoing,compensate the other party, etc. If charge found justified: The offender suggests the Correction Procedures he/she pledges to undertake. If accepted by the PJC, the PJC appoints one of its members to ensure its proper implementation in time and the process is finished. In cases the Correction Procedure suggested by the offender is not acceptable, offenders have to follow the Correction Procedure approved by the PJC.In cases an offender refuses to comply with the PJC decision, other school authorities take over the case.

Literally changes an Authoritarian-Dictatorship system into a Democracy governed by elected representatives. Ends disciplinary practices that put young people in an anti-EMPATHY)humiliating position of powerless dependency while in a critical stage of life for developing their concepts and attitudes of fairness, human rights, personal dignity, equality before the Law, and respecting the rights of others.
TEACHERS: Disciplining a classroom is by far the main cause of teachers attrition-misery. In the frontline of education teachers stand alone and are demanded to exercise control without means of enforcement, in most cases without backing of the system. CHANGE: Teachers are unburdened of sole responsibility for classroom management, and effectively released of tasks required normally of policemen, security personnel, or successful entertainers.
AGGRESSION:Aggressiveness correlates with frustration, that is with felt inability to achieve one's goals by other means. Giving students rights to exercise power legitimately and constructively with peers will lower levels of destructive aggressiveness and violence./
CORRECTION: Punishing usually breeds aggressive response. CHANGE: A shared problem-solving rather than a punishment system. Justice prevails by demanding offenders correct the wrong while sharing power to suggest their-own correction process./ DEMOCRATIZATION: A school can only teach ABOUT Democracy not FOR it, as long as life-experience of teachers and students is dictatorial. CHANGE: Changing the authoritarian power-balance.

There are experimental democratic schools that are not competitors. I do not know of any applying my specific program of power-sharing in what really matters in students' living experience, dignity, responisibility, personal freedom and democratic practice. True Democratization must be done by giving students, from middle-school level up, authority to decide on discipline and interpersonal confilcts, including teacher-student conflicts.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Because the Democratization program runs against the grain of authoritarian school systems and deeply entrenched historical habits, it will either be applied by Changemakers in authority position in some schools, or must be instituted from the top administration. Two different Ministers of Education in Israel answered me politely that my Memorandum was placed on the agenda of their National Pedagogic Committee. The two Ministers are gone long ago. However this Program was accepted to date for presentation in 3 international academic conferences on education.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
Changes in the division of power are the most difficult to institute. I hope it will be tried-out in countries where the education system is less centralized than here in Israel.
I see the impact of my project as that of an only option: Either that change of regimen will be done or there will not be significant change in Democratic Education and the authoritarian experience of young people at school, with its associated alienation between students culture and schools culture, with its associated problems of discipline, split loyalty between school and peers, teachers' attrition, aggressiveness and violence.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
There is one only gigantic barrier: for leaders in school systems to dare try it out, in spite its being in effect revolutionary. Once it is instituted I see no major barriers, because the scientific basis for for it is so overwhelming. YOU CANNOT EDUCATE FOR DEMOCRACY WITHOUT MODELING DEMOCRATIC LIFE EXPERIENCE. YOU CANNOT HOPE TO REDUCE AGGRESSION LEVEL IF NO LEGITIMATE WAY OF SOLVING A CONFLICT WITH AN AUTHORITY ON AN EQUAL BASIS ARE AVAILABLE. In my experience, the resistance "barrier" to power sharing with students, in what really is meaningful to them, is like that resistance that historically met the "scandalous" ideas of The Right to be Judged by Peers, Checks and Balances, and Government by the People, Democracy itself.

My most significant learning in life occured not in school but in a T-group in a Laboratory Setting, which has a facilitaror but is leaderless and completely egalitarian, truly Democratic. I experienced it and was completely convinced that it can resolve interpersonal conflicts far better than any other. At that time I read Freedom to Learn by Carl Rogers, and later I participated in a workshop with him. This program came naturally and I don't even see it as innovative in terms of ideas. It is Application that Makes a Diffference, because in this instance Social Science and Psychology tackle a power-system, and power-systems resist change. My favorite of Rogers' quotation is "Psychology can by very subversive when it enters the realm of political power".

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
The last National Assessment of Educational Progress found that less than one-third of American fourth, eighth and twelfth grade students are proficient in civics. There is a critical and urgent need to educate teachers about the Founding Documents. According to the Department of Education, less than 20% of History teachers have obtained even a minor in History.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
A recent Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) study reports that an essential component of improving civic learning among students is to more adequately prepare teachers on civic-related subjects. The Joe Foss Institute and Bill of Rights Institute’s Being an American Seminar will provide teachers with the background knowledge and classroom-tested teaching strategies they need to prepare young people to protect Founding principles.
We propose to conduct the Being an American Seminars nationwide, with the first three being scheduled in Arizona, Montana and Texas, to increase area students’ understanding and embrace of the Constitution.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Utilizing the JFI’s and BRI’s Being an American: Defending and Appreciating Freedom curricula, a distinguished constitutional scholar and one Master Teacher will lead participating teachers (approximately 40 per seminar) through a series of scholarly lectures and pedagogical instruction. The three Being an American Seminars currently scheduled will reach approximately 120 teachers, giving them with the tools they need to better prepare their approximately 9,600 students to protect Founding principles. The preliminary seminar schedule is as follows:

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
JFI's veteran volunteer staff consists of 350+ dedicated individuals throughout the United States, who provide our Veterans Inspiring Patriotism program at no cost to interested schools, which has now reached over 900,000 students; in 2011 we reached over 140,000 students. Through its teacher programs the Institute has made positive knowledge impact on over 18,500 teachers. Through its work the Bill of Rights Institute provides a better understanding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights to more than 2 million students.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
According to the Bill of Rights Institute’s calculations and experience, by reaching 400 teachers, we have the potential to reach over 32,000 students in the first year.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Both institute's are funded by donations and grants, fundraisers are planned to help raise money for our programs.

Though Joe passed away in 2003, the Institute—under the guidance of Didi and its Distinguished Board—is working hard to teach patriotism, democracy, public service, integrity, and an appreciation for America’s freedoms to children in schools and classrooms throughout the country. The Institute does NOT promote any political, religious or military organization or agenda.

My goal in life is to set up a successful continuation school on a year long programme for students between sophomore, junior and senior year in high school. At the moment I work with online marketing within my own company, of which I am looking to expand. Since 2009 I've trained more than 3.000 teenagers in public speaking, integrity, reaching goals, motivation and lots more.

We have teamed up with a lot of partners who who are willing to give a cashback on their products. We give the consumers a chance to then save money and donate to charity as everytime they buy something, 80% of the money the client gives to us, goes the consumers wallet. 20% of the money will go to a charity. This will be presented as when someone makes 80 pounds. We add an extra 25% of that amount = 20 pounds to a charity. The company runs of a tiny monthly fee paid by the consumers, when accessing the advatanges.

As ClubKard is in the pre-development phase, we have not had a social impact just yet. In the future we hope to help charities make an impact. We are like a tool, that helps others, help everybody else.
What barriers might hinder the success of your business? How do you plan to overcome them?
Our only barrier is getting people to join the project. We have deals with affiliate networks and journalists within Scandinavia, but we will work to get a global network that can push for a global launch. Network is a core value in the success of ClubKard.

We will spread the word through social media, affiliate and permission marketing based campaigns.
The model is like this.
We create a campaign, such as the consumer receiving a free gift. In order for them to receive the free gift and a free trial, they need to become a member of the service. They start on a free 14 days trial, and after this period, a membership fee of 5 pounds will be deducted every six months. Unless they choose to end their membership. If they continue 30 pounds will be deducted for membership fee the next 6 months. Out of this amount 10 pounds are used to pay for the gift, 15 pounds for the affiliate, SM or Email campaign and 5 pounds to send the card. If they do not cancel their membership after these three months, the next three months will be profit for ClubKard.
There are two sides to the benefits the consumer receives, one is discounts in real life stores and the other is online. The one online will provide the consumer with cashback options on mostly everything they buy. With our technology, we can track purchases made to partner websites. If the consumer saves 20% on a product, we will add another 5% for charity. Everytime they save money, we add 25% of the amount saved, for their chosen charity.

I see it as a chance for charity organisations to create a bigger impact. ClubKard is the middle man. All money donated will go 100% straight to the given charity.
What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?
Understanding a new culture. I am used to Asian and European ways of working, so experiencing the difference in cultures will clearly be good for me. I am very moved by what I experience and it allows me to grow as a person.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
Despite over 67% of Rwanda’s population being under the age of 35, their participation in policy conception, formulation, and implementation remains minimal. Many youth have become hopeless due to absence of enabling policy decisions to address their core problems such as unemployment, limited access to higher education and vocational training, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Meanwhile, youth have traditionally remained very submissive and fearful of engaging authority, due to 30 years of dictatorship and totalitarianism, including a government sponsored genocide in 1994, along with having limited government education systems to teach them how to properly conduct policy change, thus creating a culture with almost no youth voice in government.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
This project will focus on scaling up the culture of debate in secondary schools initiated by AJPRODHO since 2007/2008, especially to rural schools. This will specifically be accomplished by focusing more on policy debate, so that these students are nurtured into active citizens of tomorrow. Policy debate shall greatly boost the interest amongst students to learn more on different policies, and even identify existing gaps in terms of policy to trigger debate for their enactment. Students shall be equipped with the relevant tools and skills to research, intelligently discuss, and critically analyze different policies as well as the ability to present ideas in a clear, organized and professional manner, thus assisting them in future political advocacy.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Our project model shall be implemented in 10 pilot Secondary Schools, 5 from Kigali City and 5 from the more rural Eastern Province. From here we will select 2 students and one teacher from each school, who we will teach debate methodology and advocacy during a three-day training seminar. We will use this foundation in order to start debate clubs in each school, with each in charge of organizing monthly debates on policy issues, as well as one inter-secondary school debate tournament. Overall, this should result in students’ views on different policy issues being raised and forwarded to decision makers through policy briefs generated through debates and endorsed to different stakeholders, along with initiating discussions with relevant institutions to promote policy debate in secondary schools. Subsequently, this debate program should help improve students’ political will and efficacy, as they learn about the government system, and how to negotiate it to a greater extent, within a safe, educational environment.

We do not have competitors as such, but rather partners on similar issues. An example of this would be Never Again Rwanda, as a local CSO that also organizes debates in secondary schools. In order to avoid duplication of schools, we have a joint committee to select which schools each organization should work with, along with discussing which policies have worked and which have failed with each school. There has been no challenge with this yet.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
Since we started this project in 2007, we have seen a significant increase in both political awareness and efficacy among youth participants. Students have begun to take a more active role in local governance and politics as they have learned how to peacefully and effectively advocate for themselves, thus taking away some of their previous fears of engaging with authority. Along with this, students have learned how to provide clear and easily accessible information to their fellow youth, as they write articles for AJPRODHO’s bi-monthly magazine concerning those political issues that most interest and affect them. This project has also allowed us a greater insight into the needs of youth in Rwanda, thus giving us direction in which to focus our activities.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
Over the next one to three years, we expect to see a continued growth in student awareness and advocacy, as each school continues with their debate programs, while we focus on expanding this program to even more schools, thus reaching increasingly more youth. Similarly, the expertise among educators should grow during this time period, as they gain experience in teaching students debate. Along with this, we expect an increase in the number of youth-focused magazines available in Rwanda, as these students build their journalizing skills and realize the importance of creating awareness among their fellow citizens.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Keeping the schools motivated to continue with their debate programs after the initial six-month period provides our biggest barrier to the continued success of this project. However, this should be easily overcome as we keep in constant contact with the school, providing occasional funding support and lobbying for the continuation of this program. Along with this, the increased national presence these programs should create for these schools, as they win inter-school competitions and gain recognition, should help build a positive reputation around these schools and incentivize them to keep the debate programs in place.

Every day at AJPRODHO we deal with disenfranchised youth who feel as though they have absolutely no say in local politics and governance, especially due to the history of Rwanda. As such, we are constantly searching for new ways to help promote political efficacy and awareness among youth. Meanwhile, debates on policies have long been recognized as being an important tool for informing youth on policies, along with having them actively participate in the entire governance process. Due to this, it did not take much of a leap of mind to go from our more humanitarian rights focus, to attempting to empower youth to advocate for themselves with the formation of local secondary school debate programs.

With this project specifically, we are funded by the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) and the European Commission. However, some other partners fund other related project, for example, Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), which supports a project to strengthen youth to monitor and evaluate service delivery.
What type of team (staff, volunteers, etc.) will ensure that you achieve the growth milestones identified in the Social Impact section? [75 words]
In order to achieve our milestones, we will have a small, dedicated group of staff members. At the top will be our Project Coordinator, who will oversee the entire project, making sure that all is running smoothly and reporting back to headquarters. Then we will have a professional debate educator to teach debate methodology to the students and teachers. Finally, we will have ten teachers, one from each school, who will be responsible for carrying out the day-to-day administration of the debate clubs, along with supervising and educating the students further on debate.

The Chattanooga Peace Center is meant to be a center for developing and expanding peace education in the Chattanooga area. Chattanooga is a vibrant city that emphasizes culture, community & the arts yet peace and conflict education is very limited. The center will be a place for peace educators to come together to host seminars, seek out schools to teach at, compile resources, write essays & etc. The center would also include a museum area that would focus on Chattanooga history, nonviolent movements, & people of nonviolence.
National NGO “Azerbaijan Youth Euro Atlantic Organization” is guided by the belief that high civic education and active participation of the population in the process of development of society are the main conditions of civil society. The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
In about 60% of the 3,000 street harassment incidences submitted to Hollaback!, the person being harassed reports that witnesses existed – but failed to act. In a content analysis of these stories that is now being performed by Cornell University, the initial findings show that positive bystander responses made street harassment more likely to cease, but positive bystander responses were extremely rare. Street harassment has historically been normalized and underreported. As a consequence, most lack empathy towards victims and feel that intervening is “not their problem.”
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The “I’ve got your back” educational campaign is designed to build empathy by developing the capacity in students to emotionally connect with the feeling of being harassed or having someone they love harassed. Developed in collaboration with Green Dot, an award-winning bystander campaign based in evidence-based research, this educational campaign acknowledges the real concerns of students in intervention – including safety, shyness, and a fear of being made fun of—and teaches students to identify realistic intervention options including asking people who are harassed if they are OK, developing a distraction, or contacting authority figures. In addition, students will be invited to report their bystander interventions through our iPhone, Droid, and website in green alongside the thousands of stories of harassment already documented on the site in pink.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
An “I’ve Got Your Back” workshop is performed at Jose’s school on Monday. On Wednesday, he is walking to school when he hears someone yell, “hey baby, I want to hit that” to his classmate. He’s heard this man say things before, but he’s always felt scared to act because the man is much larger than him. This time, he keeps walking but when he and the girl are out of earshot asks her if she is OK. He offers to tell the teacher with her, and she agrees. When they get to school, they report the incident together. As it turns out, this man has been harassing several students on their way to school. The school principle addresses it by relocating the school crossing guard to the area where the man regularly harasses girls. Jose tells his story on ihollaback.org later that night. His story is posted, and the next day he receives an email saying that 327 people read his story and anonymously clicked the “I’ve Got Your Back” button in support of his actions. He feels good about what he did, and resolves to do it again. Others learn from his experience and replicate his behaviour, slowly shifting the culture that makes street harassment normalized and acceptable.

Hollaback! is the only organizational dedicated to ending street harassment internationally. The field of bystander intervention is larger, but Green Dot is one of the more widely adopted because it is based in research and is currently being studied by the CDC for it’s effectiveness. Other programs include MVP (Mentors in Violence Prevention) and UNH “Bringing the Bystander,” but neither are designed to build empathy among bystanders. To date, none of these programs have been brought to a public school environment.

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
Year I: Program is piloted in 20 schools around the world, and 75% of the students declare after the workshops that they feel like it is "likely" or "very likely" that they will intervene the next time they witness harassment. Students tell over 100 stories of bystander intervention on ihollaback.org.
Year II: Program expands to an additional 20 schools around the world as more site leaders are trained. This year, 80% of the students declare after the workshops that they feel like it is "likely" or "very likely" that they will intervene the next time they witness harassment. Students tell over 100 stories of bystander intervention on ihollaback.org.
Year III: As bystander intervention increases internationally, the number of street harassment stories on Hollaback! begins to plateau.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
Barriers include:
1. Access to schools. We plan to leverage community partnerships and legislative relationships to gain access to schools and after-school programs.
2. Lack of funding. Our five-prong fundraising plan will supplement this work, in addition to in-kind resources through Green Dot and our technology team.

After launching ihollaback.org, we were struck by the number of rapidly increasing "pink dots" on our homepage - each one representing another incident of harassment. Simply put, we found it depressing. I asked our volunteer Esty, "what could we map that is happy?" She responded, "what about when people stand up for you? That's pretty awesome." We agreed to collect these stories and map them in green dots (because green looks good with pink). I began to ask around for best practices -- and quickly learned that there was already an organization called "Green Dot" that had a similar concept, except instead of mapping they did training and curriculum development. We attended their training, hit it off, and decided to work together. They have spent $20k in staff and travel to date on this collaboration.

To date, Green Dot has provided $20k in services for Hollaback! pro-bono. In Februrary of this year, they came to New York for one week to finalize the details of our partnership, including the curriculum, resources, and co-branded. Hollaback! depends on our community partnerships in all 44 cities that we serve to compliment and strengthen our work.
What type of team (staff, volunteers, etc.) will ensure that you achieve the growth milestones identified in the Social Impact section? [75 words]
Hollaback! is managed by two full time staff, executive director Emily May and international movement coordinator Veronica Pinto. Emily is a trained Green Dot trainer and Veronica will be trained this April. Emily is responsible for developing the vision behind the project, Veronica will execute the workshops, and the tech will be completed pro-bono by our lead developer and Atlanta site leader, Jill Dimond.

We need additional funding to expand our capacity and continue to support our robust team of volunteers and site leaders, who collectively provide over $4 million in in-kind services to the organization annually. The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
Empathy is necessary in order for the next generation to stand up for human rights for all and work towards a peaceful and secure world. Young people need to be taught how to participate in creating change, how to advocate for human rights. The need for human rights education in which young people learn about how people all over the world live, and for advocacy skills training, including supported opportunities to advocate on issues they care about, is essential for the next generation to become empathetic, real world problem solvers.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
The Advocacy Lab (AdLab) empowers youth to take action for human rights. Partnering with teachers in New York City middle and high schools, AdLab brings yearlong, weekly human rights education and advocacy skills training programs into classrooms. Guided by facilitators, students learn about local and global human rights issues in the first semester. In the second semester, students carry out an advocacy campaign on an issue of their choice, thereby gaining the knowledge, tools, and confidence to create positive social change. When the students start to take action to change something they care about, apathy turns to empathy. They feel they can make a difference, and are compelled to do so.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Students in Crown Heights, Brooklyn reported being subjected to many incidences of racial profiling. The Advocacy Lab supported them as they created an awareness-raising and advocacy campaign on the issue. As students gained the knowledge, skills, and confidence to confront injustice, they also educated their peers, building their presentation and leadership skills and reinforcing their learning. They practiced stating their rights in a dignified and respectful manner when engaging with police officers through a Know Your Rights presentation by the New York Civil Liberties Union, and taught their peers to do the same. In fact, two AdLab students used the knowledge they learned when confronted by police officers on the street within a week of that Know Your Rights presentation. They excitedly and proudly shared their positive experience with their peers and teachers.

The Advocacy Lab brings guest speakers into the classroom, takes students on field trips, and shares resources and services with organizations such as the New York Civil Liberties Union, Community Service Society, Picture the Homeless, ECPAT-USA, the United Nations, Amnesty International USA and Concern USA. Our students advocate on issues these organizations target. We have consulted with successful peers such as Eric Dawson from Peace First and completed extensive research on similar organizations such as Global Kids and Border Crossers. While these organizations are doing meaningful work, none provide comprehensive yearlong human rights education and advocacy skills training programs in middle and high schools with a goal of building empathy among youth.

What has been the impact of your solution to date?
The Advocacy Lab directly affects young people’s lives. The students are personally transformed by working on local, often personal issues such as domestic violence and racism, and global issues such as sex trafficking and child soldiers. Throughout the program, they gain confidence and become empathetic leaders of change, educating and mobilizing their peers and community members. AdLab students improve their communities, impact the world, and gain skills they can use for the rest of their lives. We have educated over 1000 students directly. Thousands more students, teachers, and community members have learned about human rights from participating in the students’ advocacy campaigns. The schools we work in begin to develop a culture of peace and tolerance, as year after year students are exposed to human rights language, learn about different human rights issues, and participate in advocacy campaigns.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
We plan to expand in breadth in 2013 by starting AdLab programs in new schools in New York City and expand in depth in 2014 by starting an alumni group for students who completed the yearlong program. We are creating professional development programs to train teachers and other facilitators who want to bring human rights education into their schools or community programs. Additionally, by ensuring our curriculum aligns with state standards, we are supporting teachers in the classroom in their core curriculum requirements and providing them with the means to differently and creatively engage students in mandated lessons.
What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?
A lack of funds would present an obstacle to the success of our programs. If unable to fully fund the Advocacy Lab this year, keeping the organization at its current size, we will spend another year building on our current success in order to strengthen our track record and show funders we are a worthwhile investment. We will explore alternative revenue streams and continue our major volunteer and intern recruitment efforts that have proven successful on a small scale to aid in our development.

In 6 months we will have updated our curriculum for the 2012 – 2013 year and formed partnership with two new schools in NYC.

At 12 years old, in questioning my parents about the lack of minority students in my school, I learned all schools were not equal and districts with few resources and inexperienced teachers often had a high population of minority students. As passionate as I was to change this and other injustices I was exposed to as I grew to adulthood, it was not until college that I learned about human rights and tools to advocate for those rights. If young people were to have a voice in creating a more peaceful and secure world, I knew they would need to learn about human rights and advocacy. My passion led me to create human rights education and advocacy skills training programs for middle and high schools, and co-found what is now the Advocacy Lab.

We place a high priority on connecting students with people and other groups working in the field by facilitating guest speakers, field trips and participation in real-world campaigns and events. Past speakers have included Jimmie Briggs, former journalist, author of Innocents Lost and co-founder of the Man Up! Campaign; Jenna Arnold, creator of MTV’s Exiled; and Gerry Martone, Director of Humanitarian Affairs at the International Rescue Committee. We also collaborate with local human rights NGOs to support their efforts in reaching young people and to extend opportunities to our students.
What type of team (staff, volunteers, etc.) will ensure that you achieve the growth milestones identified in the Social Impact section? [75 words]
We currently have a staff of 1.5 employees, ten volunteer facilitators, and a six member board. They, along with dedicated supporters who include former AdLab facilitators, staff, and students; partner teachers; and other "Super Fans" who care about the success of the Advocacy Lab, make up a robust team of over one hundred people. We can draw on their commitment to the Advocacy Lab so that they may contribute their time, skills, and resources to help make the Advocacy Lab a success.
