Tell us about your personal background. Why are you passionate about this issue? Making an idea a reality takes innovation, dedication and strong leadership. Do you have the necessary entrepreneurial skills to realize your vision?

I have always been taught that litter is a bad thing but more recently have realised that attitude and packaging are just as much to blame.

I am very keen to contribute to conservation works; particularly clearing up our seas and beaches, which are often coated in old packaging. This started me thinking about ways in which progress could be made and in the spirit of 'prevention is better than cure' I thought of Earthsafe.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Providing incentive and encouragement for organisations to use less packaging in their production of goods.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

By establishing limitations on the amounts of packaging used, under which products receive endorsement via a certifying logo, thereby demonstrating responsible packaging and supporting consumer choices.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

1. Research and establish packaging perameters for packaging of types of product e.g. food items
2. Create system whereby packaged items can be graded according to how much/what packaging they use e.g. percentage of recycled/recyclable materials, single wrapping etc.
3. Award Earthsafe logo to companies which meet the requirements.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

I'm not aware that there are any - the closest comparable 'logo' item is that of Fairtrade - I am hoping that Earthsafe could work in much the same way.

Social Impact

What is the social impact you have had to date and how you measure it?

None as the business is not yet operational - I need input from others to get it going. This is where (I hope) Ben & Jerry's might come in...

What barriers might hinder the success of your business? How do you plan to overcome them?

Companies may well take umbrage to their packaging methods being scrutinised but the idea is to support companies in moving forward into more sustainable methods. I anticipate that Earthsafe may take as long as Fairtrade did to get going properly and become part of social consciousness.

Sustainability

How does your model address financial, social, and environmental sustainability?

It would support sustainable packaging, hopefully saving money in clean-up and bringing revenue in reputation. It would allow consumers to make responsible choices and encourage companies to participate in eco-friendly packaging.

How do you see social entrepreneurship contributing to the improvement of developing countries?

In a global village, social entrepreneurship should be aimed at contributing to the improvement of all countries.

What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?

Discovering an entirely different culture than that in which I live now and beginning to understand the opinions held by those in developing countries regarding matters of conservation and how they feel about the way in which the developed world operates in this area.
