Tell us about your personal background. Why are you passionate about this issue? Making an idea a reality takes innovation, dedication and strong leadership. Do you have the necessary entrepreneurial skills to realize your vision?

I am 23 years old and was born in Croydon, South London, to Caribbean parents; I have an international perspective having worked in the United Kingdom and the United States where I studied and practiced a variety of approaches aimed at introducing children and young people to exercise and sports.
I am currently a self-employed sports coach working in a number of Children Centres and Primary Schools across London, where I have had the opportunity of developing my own program known as Sweet and Simple “Active Play”.

I love to help children and young people and have a dream of one day setting up my own foundation called JAM foundation caring for and supporting orphans and street children in underdeveloped countries. ‘I believe we all must dream our paintings then paint our pictures’.

I intend to influence social change amongst my community in London, which is effected by social deprivation, high gang culture, anti-social behaviour, and young people with a lack of dreams, hope, self-esteem, confidence and love. Through my experience and passion for sport and with the help of Ben & Jerry’s we can make a positvie difference.
I believe we share a very similar passion for igniting positive change and becoming the catalyst and foundation for young people to build an empowering future for themselves and others.
I Believe that I have sufficient and entrepreneurial and leadership skills to realize my vision, I have used my entrepreneurial skills to set up Sweet and Simple Active Play programs in the London boroughs of Croydon and Merton, I am innovative, hardworking, creative, punctual, passionate and hungry to make a positive difference to my community and ultimately to society at large. I have and continue to give my time away freely to achieve my goal and believe partnering with Ben and Jerry’s will be a mouth watering and successful collaboration.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

High levels of obesity and the increased risk of heart problems in children are now recognised as growing international issues requiring concerted action. In an article dated 12th May 2011 the British Heart Foundation reported that the lack of habitual physical activity during a child's early years may provide the greatest likelihood of impact on mortality and longevity. The problem is currently being exacerbated by a widespread reduction in the available facilities for Active Play, both in primary and pre-school environments due in part to reduced statutory sector funding and the lack of trained staff and volunteers.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

Active Play - Every Day!

The provision of a comprehensive programme of 'Active Play' taught to pre-school and primary school age children, in a response to the article dated 12th May 2011 by the British Heart Foundation which reported that recent studies had reinforced the need to incorporate the recommended target of 60 minutes physical activity into children's daily lives. Active Play is an important part of children's natural growth and development but requires, whenever possible, the provision of opportunities to be active, supported by appropriate facilities and supervision. Active Play allows children to make up their own play, lets them try new things, learn from their mistakes, and above all enjoy being active all whilst moving at their own pace.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

Sweet and Simple is a fun way for children under 11 to be active, together in a safe and joyful environment it brings together families and communities from across the globe with each session consisting of around 5-6 different spoken languages, It allows other families to integrate and to learn various different cultural behaviours and lifestyles which adds value to the life of each individual. Sessions are lead by highly enthusiastic coaches who understand the needs of children and are able to provide unequivocal support and trust. Sweet and Simple coaches encourage families to continue having Active Play Sessions at home so that children retain the full benefit of the activity. Our primary activities consists of a fun story telling active adventure warm up routine where the coach leads our children through a story telling desert, jungle or ice land, this is followed by fun invasion and team games such as Fruit Salad, or Mud monsters. We then facilitate an agility, balance or coordination drill, using hoops, balance beams or space hoppers etc. The session is then concluded with Fun Parachute games, followed by free play where the families and children get to express their creative play.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

Sweet and Simple introduces children, up to 11years, to exercise and multi-sports participation. In the London Boroughs of Merton and Croydon, where the model has been trialled, there is evidence of demand but no identifiable competitive service. What differentiates the Sweet and Simple model from existing ad hoc provision is the involvement of parents and carers who receive training from the founder, Jonathan Moore, a young man who has studied and practiced a variety of approaches both in the UK and the United States of America, aimed at introducing children and young people to exercise and sport.

Social Impact

read more↑ hide↑ hide

What is the social impact you have had to date and how you measure it?

The social impact we have had to date is based on verbatam reports from the organistions we work with.

“Jonathan has an infectious bubbly character which he passes on to the young children he teaches. He always endeavours to put a smile on everyone's face”

Sam Nankani Director of Thai Boxing Community Centre

“Jonathan is by far one of the most dedicated, innovative and enthusiastic coaches I have been involved with, and in an industry developing our children’s physical and emotional capabilities he is truly refreshing”

Rob Blair Therapist and Strength Coach

"Jonathan is helping the parents to incorporate exercise into their everyday living for a healthier life style and to help the whole family to enjoy and achieve"

Sophia Brobbey
Children’s Centre Officer.

What barriers might hinder the success of your business? How do you plan to overcome them?

Although there is evidence of widespread support from parents and teachers for the introduction of Active Play sessions into the daily curriculum of pre-schools and primary schools, there appears to be a lack of financial support from Local Government managers and politicians who appear fixated on academic rather than social outcomes. The Sweet and Simple approach, which relies for its delivery on the involvement of parents and carers, can enable adequate levels of Active Play provision at an affordable cost.

Sustainability

How does your model address financial, social, and environmental sustainability?

Active Play is an important part of children's growth and development. Allowing children to play lets them try new things, learn from their mistakes, and above all enjoy being active whilst moving at their own pace. Active Play also helps establish lifelong skills, such as:

• Decision making and problem solving skills
• Resilience and a ‘keep going’ mindset
• Self-belief and self-confidence
• Independence
• Creativity and imagination
• Skills in dealing with change

Just as important is an ability to express feelings, laugh, have fun, and mix with other people which helps to develop:

• Communication and social skills
• A sense of belonging
• An understanding of social rules
• Friendships
• A sense of ‘give and take’

Children who have experienced habitual Active Play are more likely to become well adjusted young people, better able to resist the apparent allure of gangs and criminal activity so providing a substantial on-going social, economic and environmental benefit to society at large. The involvement of parents and carers in delivering services ensures that costs are minimised and sustainable.

Awareness & learning

How do you see social entrepreneurship contributing to the improvement of developing countries?

The problems which Sweet and Simple seek to address are universal and can be found in developing countries. Sweet and Simple's contribution to overcoming this situation was conceived in the Southern States of the USA and further developed in South London in areas which face many of the problems experienced in developing countries, namely social and economic deprivation, limited educational opportunities and poor nutrition. The founder of Sweet and Simple is a young man of African-Caribbean descent who has experienced many of the problems faced by children today but who, through participation in sport, has been able to become a role model for others and to develop a unique approach to exercise specifically designed to be transferable to developing countries

What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?

From my previous experience in Kenya during 2010 which I found thoroughly enriching, The challenge of learning how a cooperative business model woks, and how a vanilla factory operates would be a great eye opener and experience I would never forget, This once in a life time experience will allow me to use the skills I have learnt and put them into action.
Working as team amongst other like minded individuals is something that truly excites me and will broaden my imagination learning from them and working together to complete various task is truly exciting prospect.
The opportunity to make friends with my Ugandan brothers and sisters will allow me to appreciate their culture, way of living, and foods they eat and is something I hope I can take back to the UK with me.
Sharing my experiences with others and vice versa will allow us to share what we have in common while becoming more aware of social entrepreneurship activity.
