I have a normal background. I come from working-class parents, was never the richest or most popular child at school, always had a deep passion for business, and a desire to help the global environment with any business manner I can. I have read many articles, resources and help tools to aid me in my chosen career. I have attended seminars, and spent endless hours working on any idea I may have, and tweaked it so it has a positive impact socially.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

I am trying to resolve the current damaging effect of vehicles and transport.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

While I appreciate car manufacturers are working hard to reduce their carbon emission, I feel they are the only ones doing it. Do we see the local councils pushing for greener energy? Do we see large travel companies changing their freight company or logistic vehicles? Do we see train and tube bosses pushing for greener solutions? No, we do not. Therefore, my solution is to work alongside these companies, manufacturing companies and engineers to construct a method in which this is viable. My eventual outcome is going to be a manufacturer of green vehicle parts, that can be used in conjunction with buses, trains, tubes, cars, lorries and even airplanes.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

My solution will make a difference because these larger vehicles emit the most emissions.

A Bus alone produces 3,000 tons of cancer-causing soot and 95,000 tons of smog-causing compounds PER BUS EVERY YEAR.

If these buses can have their engine components converted to be green, this would greatly reduce the output of deadly compounds.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

My peers would be nearly every citizen in the UK. No-nody likes to live in a place where smog and cancer compounds are around them all the time. I have completed primary market research in to this, and 97% of people asked in our survey agreed this would be the greatest eco-idea to come for centuries. As this point we have surveryed 1947 people, and counting! The only real competitors would be the already established manufacturing companies and factories, however, most of these are now located overseas, so to import the components, would involve shipping, thus more poisonous gasses released, something we are avoiding, so even these large-scale companies are of no threat.

Social Impact

What is the social impact you have had to date and how you measure it?

I have already met with 3 different COUNTY councils, and outlined the plans I am aiming to achieve. All 3 agreed with the principle of it, but did say they were not too sure if they plans would be cost-effecient. While raising capital for this project, I have been pushing for the "re-charge" stations for green cars at petrol stations, and have had meetings with management at regional levels about getting these put in to their petrol station chains. One station did come back to me, and have informed me that when these are more established, they would be more then happy to install numerous to aid their social responsibilities. I cannot name the station involved due to confidentiality, and a possible damaging effect on our current agreements. This is how I measure my current successes.

What barriers might hinder the success of your business? How do you plan to overcome them?

The main barrier is cost. I am in the process of applying for numerous grants, and a few business loans to try and achieve the most I can, in the quickest possible timeframe. Other barriers include - Organisers reluctancy, public resistance, and time. I will overcome all of these by outlining the massive positive effect this will have and I will work with old and young alike to show them the benefits we all will reap.

Sustainability

How does your model address financial, social, and environmental sustainability?

My model addresses financial sustainability by generating long term revenue by constantly meeting customer, business and environmental needs. When I have achieved more in this project, I will run a sister project whereby I will work with local businesses to reduce their carbon emissions. Social sustainability is addressed by ensuring the general public are aware of the positive outcomes that will appear from such projects both now and in the future. Environmental sustainability will be addressed with the project itself. The main aim of the project is to protect and held the environment, and by doing this it makes it massively sustainable to the environment. This project will create more jobs, greener planet, potential decrease in some deaths (although I have no medical evidence to suggest this) and possibly even reduce crime rates, as it is a known fact that pollution and other dangerous chemicals can have a negative impact on the brain, causing people to do un-characteristic things.

How do you see social entrepreneurship contributing to the improvement of developing countries?

With so many entrepreneurs coming around these days, endless individuals are constantly seeking new ways to contribute socially. With social enterprise always in the spotlight, the link between the environment and developing countries is becoming ever clearer. The more social entrepreneurs that come around, the more that link can be worked on, and the chance there will be of "developing countries" becoming equal, and having the wealth we are fortunate enough to have in this country. People are daily seeking new ways to help socially and especially help developing countries.

What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?

I think something I will find especially challenging will be seeing how "the other half live". I think seeing how absolutely different our countries are, but knowing we live in the same world will be a real heart jerker, but I would turn this in to a positive, because I would use the time to find entrepreneurial ways of helping these countries, and finding ways in which I can personally help maximise their finances, social backing, and medical care. It would be very rewarding going to see Uganda, as it has always been a dream of mine to get close to people from a developing country, and help them wherever I can.
