The Hackney Pirates
Location
We Pirates are making learning a grand adventure. We find inspirational volunteers who give kids intensive 1-1 attention, because teachers can't do it all. And we don't just do school work - because school is not much like real life! Our young Pirates work on making real-world products like websites & books, which develop their real-world skills (as well as their literacy grades). We work in a wacky creative space that's different to school. And then we rent our space and sell our products so we can live sustainably from the creative work we do
Reason:
The Hackney Pirates are transforming the WHO, WHERE and WHAT of learning. WHO should be helping young people learn? You should! With the right training, all the community have a really important role to play in sharing skills & knowledge. WHERE should people learn? Well companies like Google think it's worth making amazing spaces for a productive working environment, and we believe that kids derserve the same. So we've created an incredible creative learning centre complete with secret passageways and wonky libraries, that others can rent. And WHAT? Young people need to work on projects that matter, so we get them working alongside creative professionals to make real, saleable stuff they care about, which develops their literacy as they go.
