¿Cuál es el problema principal al que tu iniciativa quiere dar respuesta y cómo lo estás haciendo o planeas hacerlo?
The issue of DENGUE FEVER is endemic in our region, and gets worse each year. When we learnt that the levels of infection in some neighborhoods in Asuncion reached 25% of the population and we could not find any equivalent data for Nanawa city, we considered building a partnership with Fundacion Mundo Sano to work on this issue.
Due to the high population mobility between the cities of Asuncion and Nanawa, it was of great importance to know the current levels of infection in Nanawa. We can not disregard the fact that Paraguay has more than 1 million people infected by one of the serotypes of this disease, which makes them highly vulnerable. If this people are infected again by a different serotype, this could lead to death.
This project aims to raise awareness in the community about the disease and determine the levels of infection (this is the relation between the number of homes infected by the mosquito transmitting dengue, and the total number of homes, as a percentage), in Nanawa (Paraguay). Also, the project seeks to support the work of Fundacion Mundo Sano in the Barrio 1° de Mayo neighborhood in the city of Clorinda (Argentina), by visiting every home, door to door, to raise awareness and collect data for further analysis

Descripción del proyecto
To raise awareness, through different means and techniques, about the Dengue Fever disease and its effects on our health in Clorinda (Argentina) and Nanawa (Paraguay).
Único y diferente
No youth group has echo with this situation in Nanawa (the lack of data about the levels of infection of the Dengue transmitting mosquito). In fact no one has, not even the Paraguay government authorities. This is why we felt so committed to do something about it, specially since Nanawa is a city in Paraguay which is literally next to Clorinda (to give you a sense, there are only 200 meters between the commercial centre of Clorinda, and that of Nanawa). The geographical border is a small part of the Pilcomayo river. During several days, and with the support of Fundacion Mundo Sano which provided transportation, we visited most of the homes in Nanawa raising awareness and doing a treatment to all their potential mosquito breeding grounds. This was done in the months of January and February 2006, during days with more than 40°C temperature. We also organize puppet shows in schools and we are now borrowing a projector from Fundacion Mundo Sano to do slide presentations too.
Plan de proyecto
To continue our awareness raising activities, especially amongst children, in schools, clubs, and non-formal education centers. We want to continue with the puppet shows, which is an activity that children enjoy very much, specially the little ones.
¿Quiénes son los destinatarios de tu iniciativa?
The entire community in our city, as well as the inhabitants of Nanawa in Paraguay.
¿Cuáles son tus alianzas más exitosas y cómo las has establecido?
We have a partnership with the Clorinda branch of Fundacion Mundo Sano (www.mundosano.org). This organization provided us with transportation to Nanawa from the Barrio 1° de Mayo in Clorinda, which is 7kms away. They also provided us training materials and the chemical products that were use to treat water reservoirs that could be potential mosquito breeding grounds, as well as the informative materials we distributed in the homes. We also had the support from the Municipality of Nanawa. Finally, we have a very good relationship with primary schools, who open their doors to any activity that we carry out.
Impact
Eficacia
More than 1500 children have attended our talks, movie and puppet shows in our campaign against Dengue.
Impacto
Our impact has been highly positive. We consider that the only way to eradicate the mosquito Aedes Aegypti, which transmits Dengue, is for people to adopt healthy habits. These habits are the ones that will enable us to reduce the levels of infection to levels where the risk is minimum. Children are the age group that best and most rapidly assimilate these habits and turn them into daily practice; this is why our work is focused on them.
Scaling up Strategy
We never had problems, the issue of dengue in our region is very complex, given the situation in Paraguay. More and more, people, governmental institutions and business are becoming aware of this and want to collaborate. We consider there is still a long road to walk, as statistics show that some age groups are still not aware of this situation and the high risk it poses to their health.

As a team, we always participate in various calls for projects in an effort to obtain funding. But the multiple activities that we do (you can read more about them in www.ecoclub-clorinda.blogspot.com) are carried out putting in a lot of ourselves and our partners. We constantly seek to work in that way, for example in this project, Fundacion Nuevo Mundo provided the leaflets, training and transportation. We think that this kind of joint work provides more and better results.
Recursos no financieros o servicios
Even though we already have a blog, we still need to design our website. We already have the domain registered (www.clorinda.org.ar) which is a space we want to share with other organizations in our city to show the work we are doing.

Motivación
I am a member of the team since the Ecoclub was created in 2005, as part of the International Network of Ecoclubs. On a personal level, this is very rewarding for me, because we are always seeking to do things for the common good, such as the campaign against dengue fever, collecting bottle tops for a pediatric hospital that sells them as recyclable material in order to raise funds, collaborating with an institution that works with kids with special needs, organizing recreational activities in a neighborhood where most kids are indigent, organizing movie shows in very low income neighborhoods or isolated areas far from the city, learning ourselves about environmental issues, education and leadership. We do all of these putting the best of ourselves and our willingness to help others. I am part of a TEAM. It is the team that decides our activities and it is our history as team that makes us happy and proud of being part of it. On a personal level, I come from a very humble family of the working class, we are 7 siblings. I like to study on a tertiary level (note of the translator: tertiary level is education after secondary school, but not university). I currently work helping a person who has health problems.
Premios o reconocimientos
As a recognition, we were selected as an Avancemos team for a project similar to this one, related to the prevention of dengue fever. We are recognized at the local and provincial level by the media, which frequently cover our activities. Also, other organizations recognize us as referees in various topics.
