The project is now being carried out, but we need FUNDS to make it more feasible. We want people to learn to recycle so that there is less waste in the river, and at the same time receive funds to be able to benefit the community. We are addressing the problem in the following ways: We gave training to the schoolchildren and their parents about what recycling is and how it would benefit the children in the community, we put in place a rewards program so that the children will bring in materials, we rented a recycling center and we contacted a company that was available to come to “la Limonada” (part of Guatemala city and the location of the recycling center). Our set costs consist of renting the premises and the salary of the woman in charge of the center. Profits are used to buy gifts for the children. We also have included ex-gang members in our activities. We have invited them to participate in the contest so they paint graffiti on the walls of our center promoting the recycling center. It is a very complete project that covers many topics, including education, inclusion of women in the country’s economy (teachers and mothers), inclusion of ex-gang members in the country’s economy, contamination and a little knowledge about recycling. It covers the main topics that weigh down our country and presents a feasible solution. Moreover it is a project that will have follow up, as we are now teaching the financial and business tools necessary for success to the teachers, who will be the ones to maintain the project in the future. The project will be sustainable without our participation.
¿Cuál es el problema principal al que tu iniciativa quiere dar respuesta y cómo lo estás haciendo o planeas hacerlo?
El proyecto ya se está llevando a cabo, pero necesitamos FONDOS para que tenga más alcance. Queremos lograr que la gente aprenda a reciclar, para que hayan menos desechos en el río, a la vez que se obtengan fondos para poder beneficiar a la comunidad. Lo estamos haciendo de la siguiente manera: dimos capacitaciones a los padres de la escuela y a los niños sobre qué es el reciclaje y cómo beneficiaría a los niños de la comunidad, pusimos un método de premios para que los niños llevaran material, alquilamos un centro de reciclaje y contactamos una empresa que estuviera dispuesta a llegar a la Limonada. Nuestros costos fijos consisten en el alquiler del local y sueldo de la señora encargada del centro. Las ganancias sirven para comprar regalos para los niños. También hemos incluido a exmareros en la actividad, los invitamos a participar en un concurso para que pintaran paredes del lugar con grafitti promoviendo el centro de reciclaje. Es un proyecto muy completo que abarca varios temas, educación, involucramiento de la mujer en la economía del país (las maestras y la madres), involucramiento de exmareros en la economía del país, contaminación y poco conocimiento del reciclaje.
Abarca los principales temas que agobian a nuestro país y representa una solución factible.
Además es un proyecto que va a tener seguimiento, ya que le estamos enseñando a las maestras, que van a ser quienes manejen el proyecto en el futuro, las herramientas financieras y empresariales necesarias para poder tener éxito. El proyecto será sostenible sin nuestra participación.

Único y diferente
Our project is truly innovative, as we are helping by setting up of a business, which gives the project sustainability. Moreover, we are working in a slum of our country, an area with which most of Guatemala´s population that does not live there is not familiar. We are a group of university students that sacrifice leisure time to lend a hand to the most needy. We are creating a business that benefits all of the community, and furthermore we have obtained the approval of the Environmental Minister of our country and the municipality, but we need funds.
Plan de proyecto
Continuing promoting the recycling center. Opening another center in the neighboring area, as the people from that area cannot go to another area because there are enemy gangs. Running new businesses for the products that cannot be recycled: ecological construction, compost. Making alliances with private organizations and foundations to expand the project. Increasing the amount of material recollected by way of buying the materials with the most demand.
¿Quiénes son los destinatarios de tu iniciativa?
The school run by “La Fundación Plantío de Jehová” (an organization) that obtains funds. The children who obtain an education and a better future. All of the community that has a cleaner and more prosperous area to live in.
¿Cuáles son tus alianzas más exitosas y cómo las has establecido?
“Pura vida” (organization): We went to a conference and introduced ourselves and they gave us recycling manuals and we are working to see how to carry out training.
“Fundación Plantío de Jehová” (foundation): They sought us out to see how we could help with the trash problem.
Environmental Minister of Guatemala: We asked for a meeting with the minister. They could not give us money but they gave us their support.
NOURISH (organization): We are working to get our project adopted by one of their chapters and to be able to obtain funds and students that come to become familiar with our project.

Actualmente el centro es sostenible con el material que se vende, pero deseamos que se impacto sea mucho mayor. No esperamos que sea financiado por siempre, necesitamos una inversión inicial y después se va a financiar por sí mismo.
Además de la sustentabilidad financiera, ¿cómo planeas expandir y sostener tu proyecto?
La alianza con la municipalidad va a ser muy fructuosa y nos va a permitir expandirnos mucho. Se nos habla de más de 200 comunas en zonas pobres del país donde este proyectos podría expandirse. Cada centro donde se coloque tendría la misma logística, la cual ya hemos probado que es exitosa.

We threw a party at the University. We obtained the support of the Industrial Engineering student association of our university. We have visited many institutions that want to help us and we are working on the budget and support for next year. We are going to have a Bingo contest along with a Guatemalan group of student Rotaries.

Motivación
The director of the center came to talk to us and invited us to get to know the center. We all went afraid but wanting to help. Seeing the children in the school touched our hearts. We knew that it was going to be a very ambitious project and that it was going to require a lot of work, but this was what motivated us: creating a better world. We went to the place where the trash thrown in the river accumulates, and this was the final defining moment. We could not believe that while we have the good fortune of living in beautiful houses, these people were living in the midst of garbage and we knew that we had to do something.
Premios o reconocimientos
\As a team with all of our projects we were the national champions of 2008, second place in Central America and semifinalists in the world cup.
