Hi Sarah,

Can you give a bit more information about how this would work? How would you reach out to communities about this idea and how would they be selected? Who would screen the healthcare professionals? How is this model sustainable?

Hi Kelly

These are fantastic questions, especially the last one on sustainability. Thank you for asking them and I apologise for not responding sooner. I'll try to answer them as best I can below.

***How would you reach out to communities about this idea?
Initially by contacting and implementing within communities which are currently linked to the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia.

***How would they be selected?
Ideally I would like to expand operations into surrounding communities which would have been surveyed for feasibility and need during these trips by the travellers and/or the project's staff member(s) (probably me to begin with) with hopes of expanding into areas which as yet have little to no access to safer birthing practices.

***Who would screen the healthcare professionals?
A committee formed by myself (I am a Registered Nurse working in women’s health) and made up of qualified health professional (medical officers, nurses, midwives, family planning educators etc)

***How is this model sustainable?
I believe the key to any project’s sustainability in building in-country capacity and helping to facilitate local participation and empowerment. By working with local community members, especially community leaders, nurses, midwives, TBAs and doctors I hope to foster a sense of ownership within these communities. By linking in with other community initiatives that relate to healthcare and tourism I believe this project can be sustainable assuming we following best practices in development.

Thanks again Kelly. I appreciate you taking the time to ask these really important questions,

Best wishes,

Rebeccah
