What impresses me most about the competition process is the incredible opportunity for collaboration it presents. Many of the entries I have read have common themes with mine (Parents Forum) and I expect that more than a few partnerships will arise out of the submission and discussion process. Certainly the clubhouse model (fully described at the ICCD website which I visited) is a powerful one. People need and want to define themselves by much more than their suffering. Having work to do and contributions to make to our families and the larger society are essential to our well-being. I appreciate this entry from Uganda and wish Lydia Munabi and her colleagues great success.
This is a very interesting model. I noticed that Fountain House is the first (and only) ICCD Clubhouse in Africa. This makes me wonder about the challenges that you faced opening Fountain House (and how difficult it would be to scale clubhouses across Uganda and Africa). What are the greatest challenges that you faced? How did you overcome these barriers?
Thanks for a great entry! We’re impressed with the holistic services that are offered and that they are distinct from experiences at a psychiatric hospital. Would you mind providing some more information on the structure of the community center? What is the innovative plan for the members of the clubhouse?
