On November 20, 2009 the judges reviewed the entries for the Changemakers Rethinking Mental Health: Improving Community Wellbeing competition and would like to pass on the following feedback (listed below) for your entry. Thank you for applying and for your hard work in the field. We are excited to archive your entry to serve as a leading solution for the worldwide community of innovators. We wish you continued luck with your innovative, sustainable, and socially impactful initiatives.

All the best, The Changemakers Team

“I think this is a great initiative. It’s worthwhile, mostly because it’s doable and reaching an important target audience. Often children and the elderly are undermined. Elderly populations are forgotten and I think it’s important to address their concerns because it’s a stage of life where mental illness is quite prevalent. I would be interested in learning more about how the people behind this initiative manage to make the referrals? Since the elderly are often alone and it’s difficult to get in contact with them, they are an important target population for serious mental health issues.”

We train regular people (UPS, bus drivers, bank tellers, grocery store clerks, pastors, etc.) on the special needs of seniors and then they refer older adults that they feel have concerns. 90% of the time these seniors willingly and happily accept a Senior Reach staff member to help them look at options for their individual situation that may be creating problems for them. We call these regular people "non-traditional partners" because without the Senior Reach training they would not know who to call if they had a concern. In the community training we provide about 66% for non-traditional partners and about 34% for traditional referral sources (doctors, human services, etc.)

Both traditional and non-traditional partners receive a business card with behavioral concerns to watch out for along with the toll free number to Senior Reach.

Thanks for asking. Vicki
