On November 20, 2009 the judges reviewed the entries for the Changemakers Rethinking Mental Health: Improving Community Wellbeing competition and would like to pass on the following feedback (listed below) for your entry. Thank you for applying and for your hard work in the field. We are excited to archive your entry to serve as a leading solution for the worldwide community of innovators. We wish you continued luck with your innovative, sustainable, and socially impactful initiatives.

All the best, The Changemakers Team

“I really like this initiative. There are so many health education programs that just give out pamphlets and this was amazingly simple and could be used by people with a wide range of literacy. I’m interested though in learning more about how you plan on scaling up. What happens when you take it to scale and reach thousands of people? Also, I would also like to hear more about what happens when the users run out of batteries.”

“This initiative was extremely inspiring, and I liked it because it was like a dream. Since doctors and nurses are not always available to this segment of the population, this person saw the problem and created an alternative. This initiative was driven by strong inspiration and a powerful willfulness to solve the problem.”

We continue to expand and develop Speaking Books for critical life saving issues like TB, malaria, HIV and AIDS, having now created 37 different titles in 14 languages and distributed throughout Africa, India, China, USA and South America.
Batteries are easily replaced, but each book using 2 AAA batteries typically allows for over 120 complete plays. We offer a supply of free batteries to our clients, in practice rarely is it necessary to replace the battery.
Currently we are working on 12 new book titles, many for existing clients such as Merck, Pfizer and Govt Health Departments, who have had excellent results in the past with their Speaking Book programs reaching 20 or more patients per book, and with a very high level of understanding and comprehension.
The Speaking Book makes a real difference and we are committed to helping as many disadvantaged communities as possible.
