Gail,
Your entry reminds me of recent research showing that peer support through home health calls and visits has such a positive effect on women with postpartum depression, often preventing worsening of symptoms.

There are so many people who don't have insurance, or who lost it and now cant get it back because they've been treated for a mental illness and now have a pre-existing condition, or who have insurane that doesn't cover mental health. They aren't going to get help at all unless someone comes up with an innovative way to deliver it as you've had.

I'm glad you pointed out the initial skepticism of the psychiatric community. My worry as well would be how you could possibly train lay people to properly counsel and trust that what they are doing for clients is the right thing. It's good to hear that those in your area feel the program is so beneficial. I wish you luck in getting the funding to continue it.
