The Mental Health Crisis Response Institute, MHCRI, brings all Barbara Schneider Foundation's, BSF, mental health de-escalation training programs together to strengthen the overarching themes of our trainings. MHCRI grows BSF’s training mission by partnering with expert trainers and local agencies to address the concrete needs of those who encounter individuals struggling with a mental illness.   Trainings are conducted for police, detention staff, hospital nurses, corrections staff, health care and social service providers, judges, attorneys, courthouse staff, family and community members.  The trainings address the specific legal frameworks and tools each of these groups bring to their response to the individual in mental health crisis.  Trainings begin with an overview of the mental illlness framework, bring in a person in recovery from mental illness to discuss the crisis from their point of view, teach the de-ecalation model in the classroom and then use professional actors to teach practical techniques and skills to successfully de-escalate the mental health crisis.

Reason:
This project provides a platform for strengthening collaboration among the many professionals and individuals that respond to those with a mental illness. It will help de-criminalize mental illness and will support the recovery of those responded to.
