Brain awareness project

What change do you want to bring to the world?

Our goal is to raise awareness among all age groups about brain functioning and the meaning of healthy brain and its influence on everyday life, no matter who you are, your age, occupation and life goals.
The goal is to raise awareness about the meaning of public utility in relation to a healthy life style.

What are the primary activities of your project?

- A year-long competition for all school-age children
- Finding project partners
- Coherent activities appropriate for target audience
- Dissemination of achieved goals in individual activities
- Preparing, obtaining and distributing materials for precaution and education
- Training regular co-workers
- Establishing and maintaining cooperation with the public
- Connecting the public and experts and bringing neuroscientific discoveries closer to the public
- Setting up a web page and other online resources of information

What is innovative about your initiative? How is it a new contribution to the field?

With the project of raising awareness about the brain we want to encourage healthy people to actively think about their precious organ, the brain. We want to raise awareness about a lifestyle that encourages better functioning of the brain. We want to find as many project partners as possible, partners who would work towards healthy lifestyle in their private and business lives because they know how the brain functions. We want every person to know that the brain is the organ that is responsible for our life and that we need to respect and protect it. During brain awareness week (12-18 March 2012) Center Zarja will organize a study visit called »Where does our brain drive? «. The Study Visits Program is part of the EU’s lifelong learning program. We have just finished Leonardo Da Vinci Mobility Project »Exchange of knowledge and experience with the aim to improve the quality of services for persons after acquired brain injury«. We develop and prepare various prevention programs in the field of brain awareness. In 2010 we started with a national Brain Awareness Project (http://www.pom.si/), which will continue hopefully at the international level. With our knowledge and enthusiasm we would like to help people with ABI and in the Brain awareness project we would like to cooperate with people who want to be healthy and want to bring positive changes to this field.

What stage is your project in?

Operating for 1‐5 years

Tell us about the community that you engage? eg. economic conditions, political structures, norms and values, demographic trends, history, and experience with engagement efforts.

http://sl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovenija in this page thera are few information about Slovenia and its characteristics.

Otherwise we have few organizations which goals are directed in prevention in traffic, in primary schools children are learning about functioning of human body etc., they can participate in different actions. We have very succesful Slovenian neuro science association Sinapsa(www.sinapsa.org). But the Brain awareness project is the one and only who thinks more wide and open and wants to get involve with many organizations and non professionals to spread brain awareness based also on neuroscience.

Centre for people with acquired brain injury, Zarja provides a Wide range of programmes of long-term rehabilitation designed specially for people with an acquired brain injury.
It recognizes the needs of society by providing ABI prevention programmes and services, education, training and counselling for persons with ABI, their families, staff and the general public.
www.zavod-zarja.si
Acquired brain injury is a pervasive
health and social problem worldwide. Over
1.000.000, 00 Europeans have an ABI each year.
Medical and surgical advances have improved the
odds for surviving an ABI. Of those who survive
their initial injury, approximately 10.000, 00
Europeans each year become permanently disabled,
according to the Brain Injury Association (EBIS,
www.ebissociety.org). A slow, very often lifelong,
healing process is common.

Long-term experience in working with individuals with ABI and the people close to them has lead us to decide that we would try to lessen the drastic consequences that a brain injury inflict on the person, the people close to them and the society by raising public awareness.

Please describe how your project has been successful and how that success is measured

In the year of the project, we organised a competition entitled »Mysterious brain« in cooperation with the multimedia portal of RTV Slovenija. More than 70 primary schools participated in it and more than 300 children, mentors and teachers. We found small sponsors to help us carry out the competition successfully. Firstly, the winning items will be exposed at the Neuroscience conference 2011 in Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana, and after that at other institutions in Slovenia. Certain motives that were developed during the competition will be printed on various media (t-shirts, postcards, invitations …) that will serve as future means of precaution and education.
We organised numerous activities in cooperation with the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Health, Sinapsa, the Slovenian Neuroscience Association and many others; for example the participation at Otroški bazar (Child Bazaar), the biggest family event in Slovenia.
