Green LIfestyles

GLFF would offer an alternative media portal for "green" and "sustainable living" content. Through our annual film festival and (web) TV channel we strive to empower independent filmmakers and producers, and give citizen journalists a voice that is lacking in today's media environment. At GLFF it's not just a "green" message that we seek to promote, but one told in a positive, uplifting, and empowering way. In today's entertainment environment where fear-mongering and violence sell, we want to provide an outlet for the content that often gets passed over by traditional media.

Green LIfestyles

What change do you want to bring to the world?

GLFF would offer an alternative media portal for "green" and "sustainable living" content. Through our annual film festival and (web) TV channel we strive to empower independent filmmakers and producers, and give citizen journalists a voice that is lacking in today's media environment. At GLFF it's not just a "green" message that we seek to promote, but one told in a positive, uplifting, and empowering way. In today's entertainment environment where fear-mongering and violence sell, we want to provide an outlet for the content that often gets passed over by traditional media.

What are the primary activities of your project?

The primary activities are an annual film festival and we are looking to launch a web TV channel later this year.

What is innovative about your initiative? How is it a new contribution to the field?

The concept of a Film Festival and a (web) TV Channel in and of itself is not an innovation-- but our goal of creating a media outlet that focuses on content that strives to move, celebrate, and inspire people to action is something that is sadly lacking in today's media environment. Film and television are very powerful mediums and can offer a global impact for the green movement-- but unfortunately the edict of today's entertainment powerhouses are to use scare-tactics and scolding when it comes to the sustainable message, and instruct filmmakers to be careful not tread on any corporate toes. Disenfranchised filmmakers and producers are limited to what content they can produce, and citizen journalist are generally left out of the equation all together. We want to empower and spread the messages that get rejected for being "too soft" and lack the "stakes" that studios and networks are looking for. We know there's plenty of "green" content available through various outlets, however, unlike others we foster and encourage messages that seek to inform, enlighten, empower, and celebrate sustainability-- and we strive to create a media community where viewers can come to watch something that will leave them uplifted and inspired.

What stage is your project in?

Operating for 1‐5 years

Tell us about the community that you engage? eg. economic conditions, political structures, norms and values, demographic trends, history, and experience with engagement efforts.

Green Lifestyles engages both filmmakers and audiences of the sustainable message. We have a network of global filmmakers who have submitted material for past festivals, in addition to television producers and citizen journalists looking for an alternative avenue to get their material out. On the flip side, Greenlifestyles.org has a following of over 5,000 global members and growing that are seeking content on green issues that matter to them that's inline with their positive approach to life.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

The primary barrier is monetary. We plan to start with just the bare essentials to host and run the website. All programming will be donated free of charge. As we procure sponsorships of programming, we will introduce our original programming. Additionally, GLFF is primarily a volunteer-based organization so at the start no salary requirements will be necessary.

Tell us about your partnerships

Having worked on various events and film festivals, we have many green/sustainable partnerships in place already. We will work with existing partners and reach out to new green partners to help grow.
