Micro Health Insurance for Immigrants

With life expectancy growing,it becomes increasingly necessary for individuals to preserve their health at best by using social health prevention tools. As part of this trend,it is therefore crucial to find new management and organisational solutions which will facilitate access to healthcare while keeping the social & economic costs of public intervention low. The National Healthcare,which is increasingly forced to tackle the problem with a shortage of money as a result of the economic downswing of the last few years,cannot fully meet these needs. The criticality of the situation is increased by the growing number of–mostly poor-immigrants,who cannot afford considerable economic outlays. Micro insurance can help to solve the problem or to mitigate the impact of the crisis on poor people.

Entry Form title

Micro Health Insurance for Immigrants

What change do you want to bring to the world?

What are the primary activities of your project?

The concrete objective will be to underwrite policies through agreements with leading insurance companies. The policies will make it possible to access healthcare facilities at affordable costs.

These policies must ensure:
a) control and economic support for people who enter the host country, whether temporarily or permanently;
b) hospital care in clinics having an agreement with medical and paramedical staff;
c) as far as the condition of immigrant women is concerned, care shall cover complex healthcare areas, from pre-birth to birth, from routine paediatric checks to potentially detailed examinations.
d) adequate psychological support to promote greater integration into the host community.

What is innovative about your initiative? How is it a new contribution to the field?

In particular, the innocation of our project targets contact with local communities to promote the dissemination of micro insurance practises among immigrants from the same country. The micro insurance tool must be supported by community work, which will be activated through a promoter who already belongs to the contacted community. It is assumed that the spreading of policies will be promoted by contact and cultural sensitisation work on the project’s target. The promoter will basically act as a promoter of the culture of care and prevention.

What stage is your project in?

Idea phase

Tell us about the community that you engage? eg. economic conditions, political structures, norms and values, demographic trends, history, and experience with engagement efforts.

Non-EU people with scarce financial resources but with the desire to fulfil themselves in a country other than their home country.

Statistics show that the proportion of non-EU people is continuously growing; this growth is due to both the increasing migration flow and more births from the people who came to the host country.
Insurance and healthcare is definitely an important lever to promote integration between the host and the non-EU populations, preventing the various forms of illegality.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

In order for insurance agreements to be underwritten, a network structure needs to be set up within the immigrants’ host community to ensure economic support and contract coverage to newcomers or people coming to Italy to visit their relatives. Especially foreigners who are already partially integrated can stand surety for the minimum economic coverage for the policy.

Another type of possible support will be the search for project sponsors.
