BiciMujer School
Describe Your Idea
Teach women to ride a bicycle in order for them to incorporate the habit to their life as an everyday sport and as a safe means of transport.
Innovation
Teach women to ride a bicycle in order for them to incorporate the habit to their life as an everyday sport and as a safe means of transport.
¿A cuántas personas llegas o planeas llegar? ¿Quién se beneficia con tu innovación exactamente?
We first implemented our initiative in the year 2008, with 12 students (17-59 years of age) who were not able to ride a bicycle. 10 of them learned how to do it. Now we have a waiting list of more than 30 women. With the necessary resources and the ability to create bike ambassadors in schools and universities, we believe we may serve 10,000 girls and young women per year. The instructors’ training is also very important.
¿Has establecido alguna alianza, de ser así, como la has creado?
So that we could develop BiciMujer (BikeWomen) School with no more resources than our knowledge and enthusiasm, we joined Ciudad Viva, a community-based organization that started from an argument with a highway company and now works with civic urbanism issues to develop fairer, greener and kinder cities. The Macletas, a group of women who love bicycles, was born as a self-organized entity with the wish to develop projects, activities, and changes that included women, in opposition to traditional groups of cyclists, quite male chauvinist and little friendly. We have also joined our CicloRecreovía friends, who make possible the closure of streets so that we have a safe place, in the streets, to practice the sport. We have also received support from the Bicicultura Festival, which helped us with the promotion of our initiative. Besides, many more volunteers have joined us to offer their time and ensure the success of the project. We have received technical advice from Holland and Brazil.
This is a very important pioneering experience because: 1) we often cannot have access to a vehicle of our own; 2) our trips involve several destinations; 3) we have little time for ourselves due to the double-shifts we work; 4) most of us are very sedentary (77%-92%) and too self-critical with relation to our body, instead of enjoying it through movement and sports. We want women to have access to sports as a part of their daily life, something very difficult to achieve since we lack the time due to the various tasks, responsibilities, and long shifts we have to face. Besides, buses usually demand making long lines and the traveling conditions are not safe enough; crowded subways always pose the risk of sexual harassment or even worse things. Our mission is to achieve women's liberation through their freedom of movement. Women have to learn to ride (many cannot) and they have to learn to ride a bike in complex cities in order to achieve said freedom.
Impact
Provee una oración describiendo tu impacto o impacto deseado
We wish to help thousands of women change their sedentary lives and also contribute to a more sustainable world.
Our school is designed so as to have a progressive impact, which is very intense for the direct students. It is intended to be spread by the community and by the students’ emails and other means of promotion. We plan to have the necessary elements to serve a big group (school and university students) from the Metropolitan Area. We also wish to take cyclists out of the sidewalks, where they interfere with the pedestrians. Many women prefer to ride along the sidewalks, but they do not dare ride in the streets. That is why, with our promotion of the use of bikes in the streets and the training to teach the cyclists how to do it really safely, not only are we benefiting the cyclists, but the whole population, thanks to a better use of public spaces. The development of this innovative methodology has made us become a benchmark case in the region, with strong international prospects regarding active transportation and gender.
This work is included in the strategies of the group of United Cyclists in Chile, and supplements a civic working table -the government is involved in this issue by improving public policies. This is essential to create more demand for these initiatives and improve their quality through a large civic participation.
The two organizations, together, have created an innovative community communications strategy, managed by La Voz, a magazine with a circulation of 15,000-20,000 copies, web site and more. If the instructors have licenses and are well-trained, we can assure the School's future. This has a multiplying effect (the use of the bicycle is increasing in Santiago), generating new and enthusiastic trained female cyclists with the necessary knowledge. we plan to serve as a model for other cities.

Sustainability
Our first experience was financed with love –from the volunteer work of the instructors, researchers, designers and translators (for the English and Portuguese material). With a payment of USD 16 per student for the whole course (9 sessions) we could offer them soft drinks during the breaks. We want to build a permanent school, beginning with funds from the government and/or the support of private foundations, but we believe we can make it self-sustainable by integrating our school to school or municipal programs. We will continue to work with a large number of volunteers.

10 (volunteers)
What are the major challenges with regards to partnerships?
The most difficult part of it is to start with the project, since we need to do some research so as to produce first-quality material, create a specific contact network for the school, continue to develop the teaching methodology and apply it with different people, of various educational levels, ages, abilities, so as to create something that works with everyone. We also need to promote the project and have our techniques legitimized, as well as encourage women to participate.
We have built a relationship of trust and respect in Latin America's most distrustful country. However, it is very important to achieve a balance and allow both organizations (and others that may join us) to continue growing, each of them with their own individuality. We must respect and highlight each one’s work, without overshadowing one another.
The Story
We heard by the email we received from Patricia Breuer to the Ciudad Viva and Macleta addresses. For a country like ours, many times we need to be recognized by a foreign country so that such an innovation is accepted and welcome in Chile. Moreover, there are very few financing sources for female initiatives in our country, and none for urban/ sports projects like ours. We need to create networks that can give a boost to our initiative.
