Tell us about your personal background. Why are you passionate about this issue? Making an idea a reality takes innovation, dedication and strong leadership. Do you have the necessary entrepreneurial skills to realize your vision?

I feel very responsible to myself, friends, family and everybody else, to work on a more clean and sustainable world. Besides, I like nature too much to have it all destroyed on a short notice. Since a while now I work 100% independently and run a few of my own businesses. I'm very confident that me (in cooperation with my colleague) will be able to realize ORQ & NIQ and therefore contribute to awareness and a positive, green and solution based way of thinking and living.

The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?

Lack of awareness that the need for a more green, healthy and sustainable world and way of living is absolutely necessary.

The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!

To learn primary school children more about how to achieve this way of living and why it is necessary, via a very fun and solution based method.

The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities

ORQ & NIQ, is an interactive educational program for primary school children in the age of 10-12, which educates them to respect (and learn about) nature and to create sustainable awareness in a fun way. In 8 modules of about an hour, pupils learn more about the topics Nature, Energy, Water, Waste, Transport, Food, Climate change, and how a ‘Clean world’ should be like. Each module consists of: An introduction in which ORQ & NIQ (two former habitants of planet SQUALID) introduce the topic with pictures, short movies and illustrations; followed by either some questions or a game, and at last, an interactive practical exercise. Via social media, contact with other schools and exercises at home, family and other people are brought in contact with the concept as well.

The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?

In the Netherlands, but also in other parts of the 'Developed world', there are some similar initiatives but as far as we know, none of them covers such a broad spectrum of aspects that are important regarding sustainability. Besides, such initiatives are often not easy accessible and their undertone is too serious. ORQ & NIQ does cover about everything and is mostly a fun thing to do for children. Our biggest challenge will be to reach as many children (in the Netherlands, but also outside the Netherlands) with as minimum financial input.

Social Impact

read more↑ hide↑ hide

What is the social impact you have had to date and how you measure it?

Our social impact was so far little, but once we will be able to develop and distribute ORQ & NIQ we are sure a significant part of the population will learn and benefit from ORQ & NIQ. People will become more aware and altogether make an important change.

What barriers might hinder the success of your business? How do you plan to overcome them?

First, it might be difficult to find sufficient financial support to realize ORQ & NIQ in the way we have it in mind. Second, it might be difficult to convince all schools to work with ORQ & NIQ as nowadays the flow of information is gigantic, making it hard to reach the right people.

Sustainability

How does your model address financial, social, and environmental sustainability?

ORQ & NIQ will 100% contribute to environmental sustainability as awareness with the children will not only lead to a more sustainable way of living, but it will hopefully make some changes as well in future companies where they will get to work.

How do you see social entrepreneurship contributing to the improvement of developing countries?

Developing countries can profit from experience, knowledge but also financial support offered by countries that were luckier in the past. A helping hand will contribute to achieving the same course of innovative development and in the end sustainability making it a better place to live for all of us.

What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?

In my experience good communication with completely different civilizations is often the biggest challenge of visits abroad. It takes a lot of effort to truly understand each other, but once you achieve this it is most rewarding. To learn more about other cultures and ways of living makes you understand the world a little more. This understanding helps you to develop solutions, products and services for a wider range of people and purposes than you would have otherwise done.
