Idea (you're poised to launch)
How long has your solution been in operation?
Still in idea phase, but looking to launch soon
The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
Communicating is a basic human action and need. Communication is present in all private and public relationships (parental, filial, loving, friendship, professional, commercial, administrative, between States, etc.). Most individuals seem to lack interpersonal communication skills. Now, a better communication between individuals leads to comprehension, empathy, and finally peace. In my view, communication is the basis of empathy. Not only does communication include empathy (empathic hearing), but it conducts to empathy (empathic feeling). Therefore, teaching communication will necessarily lead to the learning of empathy.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
I believe that communication is a skill which should be taught at school (such as language, mathematics, science, sports, etc.). It should be taught to children from maternal to high school (i.e., 3 - 18 years old). The communication classes' form, rhythm and content should vary according to the ages. I trust that the entire society could be 'quickly' and deeply transformed (in 2 or 3 generations): not only will all children be trained to communication, but they will necessarily transmit this tool to their parents.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
At first, the communication classes should be provided by communication professionals. Thereafter, the existing teachers (language, math’s, etc.) should be trained by the communication professionals. Finally, new individuals should be attracted by the project, get trained by communication professionals and become communication teachers.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
In Belgium, there are some communication professionals who provide communication trainings in the private or professional spheres (i.e., to individuals or businesses). However, as far as I know, there is to date no project as I envision it and as described above. I plan and wish to attract in my project the aforesaid communication professionals in order for us to collaborate to its implementation.
Now that you have thought out your entry, help us pitch it.
Define your company, program, service, or product in 1-2 short sentences [136 characters]
Spreading communication & empathy: providing communication classes @ school to grant individuals with basic & powerful tools for life
Identify what is innovative about your solution in 1-2 short sentences [136 characters]
4 Impacts: large (all children), solid (15 years' learning), vertical (parents also touched) & quick (society rapidly transformed)
Social Impact
This Entry is about (Issues)
What has been the impact of your solution to date?
My project is still in its envisioning phase.
What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?
I wish to launch the pilot study phase in 2-3 schools (1-2 years), followed by the confirmation phase in 5-10 schools (3-5 years).
Thereafter, the implementation phase should touch as many schools as possible (possibly all) in Belgium.
The project is exportable to all countries.
Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact
Dream it! Wish it! Do it!
Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your six-month milestone
Task 1
Contacting communication professionals, psychologists and sociologists to have their advice, and ask for their collaboration
Task 2
Finding several schools interested in the project and wishing to participate in the pilot study phase
Task 3
Seeking for private and public support in order to strengthen the project
Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone
Convince!
Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your 12-month milestone
Task 1
Defining with the team the classes’ form (games/role play, ex cathedra, etc.) & content (empathic/active hearing, NVC, etc.)
Task 2
Defining with the schools the teaching format: periodicity of classes, schedules, etc.
Task 3
Lobbying with the academic and the political world to get their support
Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]
Several years ago, I attended a conference which changed my life. It occurred as a pure coincidence; I happened to be informed about the conference two hours before its start. Since I was working as a business lawyer and used to work late hours, I didn’t think I could make it. Finally and fortunately, I got to go with my husband. The topic of the conference was interpersonal communication, and more specifically empathic hearing. Its content fascinated me. It sound revolutionary. I was stunned: I saw interpersonal communication as a key to change the world. And I saw school as the best channel to spread this basic tool needed to become an accomplished and empathic individual in today’s world.
Sustainability
Tell us about your partnerships
At this stage, I don’t have any partnership, but I hope/trust that I will be able to convince different partners to work with me on the project: several communication professionals, a psychologist, a sociologist, and several schools. I have already conducted many exchanges and interviews on my project, and I have been able to federate a large network of supporters.
What type of team (staff, volunteers, etc.) will ensure that you achieve the growth milestones identified in the Social Impact section? [75 words]
With the same people described above; hopefully on a volunteering basis for the pilot study phase, and on a salary base for the confirmation and implementation phases.
Please elaborate on any needs or offers you have mentioned above and/or suggest categories of support that aren't specified within the list
I primarily need financial help: I wish to work full time on the project. Although my supportive husband is ready to take on our financial life, I need to earn a minimum salary (part time salary). As regards the professionals whom I hope to rally to this cause, I will look for successful active people (who will ensure the project's quality) and ask them to grant to it 2-4 voluntary hours per week.
