The Need: What problem are you trying to solve?
Young girls do have a less active leisure time and It’s a strucutal problem when most of the activities are reaching out to boys and the selection for girls are limited, especially in smaller cities. Research shows that the gender inequalities in society limits girls rights to a active life. This problem begins in a young age when girls learn to take a step back and not demand any space when boys are pushed to be active, work with their bodies and be in the center. This structure, that we can see every day are the main reason for inequality in sports, cultur and other leisure activites.
Most organizations would benefit from a more equal approach in their activities and Crossing Boarders what to inspire various groups around Sweden to use pratical methods in their everyday work.
The Solution: What is your solution? Be specific!
Our primary solution are the educational activities based on the methods being developed during six years. The metodhs are within nine context;
1. Values
2. Marketing
3. Priorities
4. Role models
5. Community
6. Economy
7. Long term thinking
8. Collaboration
9. Integration
Read more about the nine context at http://www.equalityeffect.com.
With this nine steps we educate many organizations in Sweden and are now looking to go international. These lectures and workshops are the fruit of a long period of collecting materials and clients. The prize would make sure that our ideas and methods goes global. We’re ready to take the step to a international market and this contest could help us achieve our goals.
We’re also working a initiative called the Equality Effect, a web based survey where any organization can try their work for equal participation and get help being better. The survey will be launched in Swedish during the summer of 2012.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include your primary activities
Crossing Boarders are developing a action based concept to be used by organizations within various sectors. The concept are based on nine principles to handle the situation of inequalities within the activites.
These methods are used in workshops, conversations and practical work all around Sweden.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others also working to address the needs you are and what differentiates you from them. What challenges could these players pose to your success or growth?
There’s many people and organizations in Sweden working with gender equality, but Crossing Boarders are the only initiative looking on the issues of leisure time and active lifestyle in the context of equality.
The methods are building a unique set of methods how various organizations can improve the equality, and we’re ready to take it to the next step together with Ben&Jerry.

What is the social impact you have had to date and how you measure it?
Though Playing For Change, we’re always mesure our social impact. Last year we reached 276 different organizations in Sweden who got to know better methods to work for equal participation. We also appered in 31 media outlets and are reaching more people every day. It’s too early to see a long term effect but we also follow organization in Umeå, Sweden to see what effect our methods give in the long term.
We measure our social impact trough interviews, forms and statistics from all our activities.
Sustainability
How does your model address financial, social, and environmental sustainability?
One of the major challenges to reach a sustainable development will be to work for a equal society. Both in a human rights perspective but also that many cases show that women consider sustainablitiy within the three fields to a much larger extent then men.
Getting more girls empowered to take a step foward ensure that sustaibillity will be more considerated.
Awareness & learning
How do you see social entrepreneurship contributing to the improvement of developing countries?
Social entrepreneurship have already made a significant impact in developing countries. In countries with weaker public institutions the role of individuals working together for the benefit of the community will play a major role in the development of a country.
History shows that a growing middle class are one of the best contributors to rapid improvment of the whole society, most rich countries have made the same journey as we see the current developing countries making right now.
What aspects of your stay in Uganda as part of the competition do you think you will find most challenging and rewarding?
To be in the Ugandan context will be a unique experience, a county with big challenges in public preseption on equal rights in the same time with many inspiring individual entrepreours and activits making the community better every day.
