Take 2: The Student's Point of View
Describe Your Idea
What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?
Take Two is a pilot project dedicated to getting high school and college students involved in global issues through the use of cutting-edge digital media. Each year, professional-quality video footage will be made available to educational institutions free of charge. Participating students will edit this high-definition video in classroom projects while researching and debating the complexities of the current crisis with their peers and educators. During this process the young filmmakers will hopefully themselves be changed by 'living' the lives of their subjects as they bring their stories to the screen. Students will ultimately take their work on the road to educate a wider audience.
Students are encouraged to use the media in innovative ways: one music school will be making a rap video. A high school in Canada is creating weekly podcasts on current events in Sudan and sending them to all schools in the project. Schools share rough cuts, ideas, etc. on an interactive website, thus building a global virtual community. One of the most innovative aspects of this project is the amount of buy-in among the schools themselves: participating teachers and students are building the Take 2 website, gathering background materials, translating interviews, creating educational modules, sharing information, and even choosing the Take 2's name and designing its logo. This organization is being built by the educators rather than being imposed upon them by an outside institution. This has created enormous enthusiasm among both teachers and students.
Next year students will be in touch with the filmmaker in the field and will become part of the production process as well as editing and public awareness/advocacy. In Year 4 students will begin choosing the region/subject of the footage.
What will be the impact of your idea?
Our mission is to create global awareness among students in the USA and Canada (and globally by year 3), provide them with the opportunity to build the skills of leadership and active citizenship, and then support them in communicating their ideas and expertise to the world around them. By our second year we expect to have over 250 high schools involved in this project throughout North America and Europe. We plan to expand into several new media platforms (i.e. podcasting, live feeds from the field, streaming web video, etc.). Once they have completed their projects the students will take them on the road. Armed with their own documentaries, knowledge, and enormous enthusiasm, the students will appeal to a much wider audience who might otherwise not be interested in issues such as the genocide in Darfur.

People: We are looking for ideas from people who can make them happen.
Karin Muller has produced several major documentary series for National Geographic and PBS: Along the Inca Road, a nine-month odyssey along the spine of the Andes; Japanland, a four-hour series on traditional Japan; and Hitchhiking Vietnam. She has authored three books that have been widely reviewed and translated into eight languages. Karin is a regular on the professional lecture circuit as an expert on Japan, Vietnam, Peru and Tanzania. Currently Karin is working full time on Take Two - filming in conflict regions of the world for three months each year and creating infrastructure and support for the students working on the resulting footage. Resumes of the seven members of Take 2's Board of Directors is available upon request. A steering committee of both participating school teachers and partner organizations (i.e. Facing History) is also available. Volunteers provide approximately 30% of the administrative man hours. Currently no one is taking a salary.
Year 1:
The genocide in Darfur - resulting in the murder of 300,000 people and the displacement of 4 million more, is the subject of the first installment of this project. Shot this past summer, the footage has already been sent to over 30 educational institutions throughout the country. The 40 hours of video captures in-depth human stories completely unlike the typical “reporter in the field” views so often seen on the evening news. The use of this global, timely, and dramatic footage will aid students in developing a global consciousness well beyond the bounds of the single Darfur issue. In addition, the edited footage will give teachers and institutions the opportunity for recognition on a regional and national scale with the possibility of entering film festivals and creating PSAs, podcasts, websites, and other innovative media outlets. Schools are creating weekly podcasts on current events in Sudan, translating interviews, building websites, researching background information, and building infrastructure for the project.
How much will it cost to launch your idea?
Take 2 raised $19,865 in 2008 towards the Sudan pilot shoot - the remaining $25,000 in operating cost were paid out of pocket by Karin Muller. The second year's shoot (Cuba) has already been completed at a cost of $18,000 for equipment and three months in the field. Adminstrative operating costs for 2009 are $16,000. 2009's field shoot (Israel/Palestine) will cost $23,000. Thus far $1000 has been raised towards the 2009 budget. Future funding will come from the public, foundation grants, and fundraising efforts through lecturing at Rotary Clubs, etc. Schools will never be charged for the footage.
