The Story
What stage is your project?
Idea phase .
What was the motivation or defining moment that led to create this innovation? Tell us the story.
The Liberia 17 years senseless civil war is evidenced by the high rate of homelessness and suffering experienced by young girls and women in our country, some using soccer as a tools to sustain themselves. The Liberian civil war can not be easily forgotten because the effect still lives with us: The civil war and government mismanagement destroyed much of Liberia's economy, especially the infrastructure in and around the capital, Monrovia. Many businesses collapsed, with investors taking capital and expertise with them, but with the conclusion of fighting and the installation of democratically-elected government in 2006, United Nation and some humanitarian organizations have come to restore some level of hope to our people but the need for safe drinking water in communities and unemployment still remains a problem, especially when the official unemployment figures calculate 85% of population are out of work, and 80% live below the poverty line ($1 per day) making it uneasy to do away with homelessness especially among our women and girls.
Please tell us about the social innovator behind this initiative
FODEDE was established in October 2007 to address the plight of the destitute people of Liberia and is using street soccer as tool to develop and change the lives of the women and girls.
FODEDE promotes street soccer awareness through coaches’ workshops, and street soccer tournaments in various townships, primarily around
Monrovia. The organization have strong links to football and has supported two of its female recriuts; Cherie Sayon and Famatta Boimah to the U S A Playing college soccer.
